Ellie Goulding floats in Calvin Harris' 'Outside' video

Ellie Goulding spends quite a bit of time looking in a mirror in the “Outside” music video. Then again, she’s wearing a sports bra that shows off some impressive abs—so why wouldn’t she?

“Outside” is a track off Calvin Harris’ latest album, Motion. It features Goulding’s vocals. The two have teamed up before, for 2012′s “I Need Your Love.” And while “Outside” is his song, she’s the real star of the music video: The camera spends most of its time focused on Goulding as she sits on a sidewalk in front of two colorful houses, singing straight into the lens.

'Divergent' soundtrack: Hear Ellie Goulding's brand-new 'Beating Heart' here -- EXCLUSIVE

When Divergent hits theaters on March 21, it is poised to become one of the biggest movie events of the spring. One of the key elements that carries the flick is the soundtrack, with features a score by Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL as well as a series of songs that are weaved deep into the drama of the film.

Unlike many movie-accompanying soundtracks, the songs on Divergent: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (out March 11) are woven into the action of the film. The cornerstone star is Ellie Goulding, who has a handful of tunes on the soundtrack album and also provided the “musical voice” for lead character Tris Prior (played by Shailene Woodley). “For me, the movie is about a young woman finding herself, transforming herself and becoming powerful on a societal stage,” explains director Neil Burger. “It’s an intimate, personal portrait, but on a grand scale. Ellie’s music has that very intimate quality. You are in the heart of her characters, in their souls, in their minds. When she sings her voice resonates inside you. Her music was a perfect way to do all that for Tris—to feel what she was feeling inside.”

Indeed, Goulding’s voice has been integrated into the score of the film, making her a constant part of the on-screen action. “I got to jam, like you would jam on a guitar, but just with my voice,” says Goulding of the process. “I really enjoyed it.”

Goulding lent three songs to the film but also crafted a brand new tune called “Beating Heart” specifically for Divergent. “In the last scene of the movie, Tris has just experienced multiple tragedies, even as she triumphs (for the moment) over her enemies,” says Burger. “Ellie wrote ‘Beating Heart’ and we knew it’d be perfect for the end of the movie. Her lyrics almost merge with Tris’ voice-over and her music lets the movie soar above the tragedy. The sadness is still there but so is the transcendence. It’s a fantastic song.”

Lollapalooza 2013 Day 2: Mumford & Sons set the tone, Kendrick Lamar ascends, and Postal Service run a victory lap

Most of the time, Lollapalooza’s scheduling seems left to the whims of fate, the daily lineup strung together seemingly at random so that indie poppers bump up against metal acts and soul throwbacks open for folky singer-songwriters. It makes for some wildly jarring juxtapositions, with occasional stumbles into transcendence.

Saturday was different, at least at the south end of Chicago’s Grant Park. The ascendance of headliners Mumford & Sons rippled all the way into the afternoon, where banjo-friendly arrangements and country twang informed the bulk of the performances: Court Yard Hounds brought their pop-friendly version of crossover bluegrass, Eric Church stomped through a set of outlaw Southern rock, and twee Irish strummers Little Green Cars crafted colorful tapestries out of all manner of acoustic thread. (The National, sandwiched in between Church and semi-main eventers the Lumineers, must have been deeply confused by all the headband-wearing sunflower girls hanging around, as they’re used to playing for broodier types. Still, they did dedicate “England” to Mumford & Sons.)

It all led up to a triumphant turn by Mumford & Sons, who drew a massive throng of folk-hungry youth to sing along with Marcus Mumford’s every bellow and wail. There wasn’t a single tune across Mumford’s nearly two-hour set that wasn’t greeted as a massive hit, though the gathering masses reserved extra glee for “Little Lion Man,” “I Will Wait,” and “Lover of the Light.”

Mumford & Sons are not showmen, and their performance was free of both bells and whistles, but their songs clearly resonate across a wide spectrum, and they’re savvy enough to get out of the way of their trainload of sing-alongs.

Good news, Twihards: Any of these indie-pop songs could be the first dance at your wedding. From the twinkling church bells of Passion Pit’s “Where I Come From” to the Pachabel-inspired violins of Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years (Part 2)”—which sounds exactly like the first “A Thousand Years,” except it’s about 500 years longer—there’s one grand-ballroom epic after another.

The mood mostly ranges from ethereal (Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark star Reeve Carney’s “New For You”) to even more ethereal (Ellie Goulding’s “Bittersweet”), but the lovesick vibe only reaches “yuck” level twice: once, when the Boom Circuits serenade “an angel learning how to fly” on the excruciatingly twee “Everything and Nothing,” and again when Twilight actress Nikki Reed harmonizes with her real-life husband, American Idol alum Paul McDonald, on the get-a-room ballad “All I’ve Ever Needed.”

Good thing St Vincent and Green Day drop by to rough things up a bit.The former’s Annie Clark might have the best song on the album with “Antidote,” a sludge-rock anthem that pokes fun at vampire lore. (“I’ll show you where it really hurts,” she coos.) And the latter’s Billie Joe Armstrong manages to turn a stately piano ballad into an awesomely bitter love song. “Where in the world did the time go?” he wonders. Poor Edward Cullen. It’s tough to be 17 for 94 years. B

How Mumford & Sons and Taylor Swift are causing a seismic shift in the music industry

The biggest debut of 2012 doesn’t belong to a glossy pop act like One Direction or Justin Bieber.

Sure, those boys have hordes of teenage girls ready to download their music at the drop of a tweet, but they’ve got nothing on the scruffy gents of Mumford & Sons, whose new disc, Babel sold 600,000 copies in its first seven days. (The next-best opening? Bieber’s Believe, with 374,000 in week 1.)

Babel‘s success (it has now led the chart for three weeks and sold 865,000 copies total) is indicative of a larger shift within the music industry. As pop music morphs into a glow-stick dance party, country acts have adopted the traditional pop sound. That leaves Mumford and the burgeoning Americana and folk genres (think acoustic guitars, banjos, and innumerable fitted tweed vests) to fill the country void. Did you get all that? Rick Ross: The large and in charge rapper’s fifth album God Forgives, I Don’t became his fourth number one album, selling 219,000 copies in its first week. The sales total was the largest rap debut since Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded bowed with 253,000 copies earlier this year.

Carly Rae Jepsen: “Call Me Maybe,” which this week passed the 5 million mark in sales, logged a ninth week atop Billboard’s Hot 100. The track, the first off her just-announced Kiss (due Sept. 18), is now the longest-running number one single in 2012 over Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know,” which held the peak position for eight weeks and is still sitting pretty at No. 6.
