D'Angelo, Elvis Costello, Chris Rock, the Roots pay tribute to Prince at Carnegie Hall

Is it the singer, or is it the song?

That was the question on the minds of both the eclectic cadre of performers and the sold out crowd at New York’s Carnegie Hall on Thursday night for a benefit show titled “The Music of Prince.” A bevy of the Purple One’s contemporaries and followers joined together to genuflect at his funky altar, with the proceeds from the show going to a number of music-related charities for kids.

This was the ninth year for the series, and in the past, several of the tribute centerpieces—including Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young—made surprise appearances at their own shows. Prince himself did not materialize last night, but there were so many fascinating interpretations of his work and explorations of his unique charisma that it was almost better without his all-seeing eyes watching over the proceedings.

The evening began relatively tamely, with the Waterboys busting out a faithful rendition of “Purple Rain.” Though he bears no physical or aesthetic resemblance to Prince, singer Mike Scott managed to nail the same kind of passion and pathos the song’s creator first sent coursing through its veins nearly 30 years ago. It was almost too perfect, and it set an uncomfortable tone early in the evening: Would this simply be two and a half hours of extremely well-executed Prince karaoke, overseen by house band the Roots?

Luckily, subsequent performers took many more liberties with Prince’s songs, and while that led to some awkward moments, their ingenuity was generally rewarded. READ FULL STORY »

'Waiting for Superman' shows: Elton John, Elvis Costello, and Jeff Bridges to play documentary-inspired benefit concerts

Elton-JohnImage Credit: Sylvain Gaboury/PR PhotosElton John, Elvis Costello, Jeff Bridges, Gregg Allman, John Mellencamp, and other stars will perform at a pair of shows to benefit The Participant Foundation, which supports music and arts education in public schools. The concerts will take place on October 16 at the Wang Center in Boston and October 20 at the Beacon Theater in New York City.

The shows are being curated by famed producer T Bone Burnett and are timed to coincide with the release of the documentary Waiting for Superman, which explores the state of public education. The film is directed by Davis Guggenheim who previously made the Oscar-winning An Inconvenient Truth.

The concerts are the first to be presented under the banner of The Speaking Clock Revue and will feature a house band. “The privacy and the intimacy of the studio afford artists the freedom to create,” Burnett explained in a statement, “but something thrilling happens in getting away from the machines and into the live communication of real time storytelling in the larger community. We are looking forward with great anticipation to getting The Speaking Clock Revue up and running this fall and continuing it in the years to come.”

Early in his career, Burnett played with the Bob Dylan-featuring Rolling Thunder Revue, which toured extensively during the mid-’70s. After the jump you can find a clip of Dylan and the Rolling Thunder band performing the legendary songsmith’s track “Isis,” as well as the trailer for Waiting for Superman.

Tickets for The Speaking Clock Revue shows go on sale Monday, September 27 at noon, through Ticketmaster.

Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello on Bob Dylan: Exclusive 'Spectacle' clip

Last September, I was among the lucky few crowded into Harlem’s historic Apollo Theater for a taping of Elvis Costello’s Sundance Channel music/talk show, Spectacle. His guest that night was Bruce Springsteen. Elvis and the Boss proceeded to trade stories, joke around, and perform for nearly four hours, all told — enough to make two episodes of Spectacle where they’d only planned on recording one.

Part 1 of Springsteen’s Spectacle visit aired on the Sundance Channel last week. Part 2 is on tonight at 10 P.M., and we’ve got an exclusive clip from tonight’s episode right here on the Music Mix. As you’ll see, it’s a conversation between Springsteen and Costello on topics including the influence of Bob Dylan on both of their work. “He’s the father of the country that I recognize,” Springsteen says. “He’s the father of my country.” Albums like Highway 61 Revisited, he adds, “opened up your vision in a way that, for me at the time, school didn’t do.”

Check out the clip below. I’m not sure anything tonight can top the solo acoustic performance of “American Skin (41 Shots)” that Springsteen gave on last week’s episode — that was surely one of the most moving musical performances I’ve ever witnessed — but I’ll be tuning in at 10 anyway. How about you?

Watch U2 and Elvis Costello mash up 'Pump It Up' and 'Get On Your Boots'

On the season premiere of Elvis Costello’s Sundance Channel chat show, Spectacle, the boys of U2 joined the natty Brit and used the final musical performance to silence those gripers who thought “Get On Your Boots” was just a massive rip-off of Costello’s “Pump It Up.” Yeah, they sound similar. But if Elvis isn’t pissed, why should you be? Hey hey hey!

What do you think, Mixers? Awesomeness, or awfulness? And hey, are you watching season 2 of Spectacle? It’s pretty good, no? My favorite was watching the other two members of the Police restrain themselves from strangling a somewhat unrestrained Stewart Copeland last season. Do you have a fave moment from the show?

Elvis Costello to spin a Bruce Springsteen set on Sirius XM Radio: We've got his playlist

Elvis Costello will take over Sirius XM’s all-Springsteen, all-the-time E Street Radio station next Friday to spin a few of his favorite Boss-related tunes. A rep for the satellite radio service has provided the Music Mix with a list of the songs the seasoned singer-songwriter chose, and it’s a nice little selection. Check it out after the jump: You’ve got a few early-to-mid-era Springsteen classics; Costello covering Springsteen’s “Brilliant Disguise” (hear it below); a song from Springsteen spouse and backup singer Patti Scialfa‘s most recent solo album; and a live cover of Jackie Wilson’s “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher” from the E Street Band’s Nov. 7 concert in NYC, where they were joined on stage by Costello.

The guest DJ set will air at 4 P.M. EST on Sirius XM’s E Street Radio next Friday, Dec. 11. If that’s not enough crossover for you, start getting excited for Springsteen’s upcoming appearances on Costello’s Sundance Channel interview/performance series Spectacle, airing Jan. 20 and 27. I attended the taping of those shows earlier this fall, and fans of either artist are in for a special treat — more on that soon. Will you be tuning in to either or both?
