Eddie Vedder, Foo Fighters, No Doubt come together for EB charity auction

Eddie-Vedder.jpg

Want to help out a good cause and score some cool rock and roll swag? Then you should check out the auction currently being held to raise funds for Heal EB, an organization that raises funds and awareness for the rare skin disorder Epidermolysis Bullosa, a painful, often debilitating and even life-threatening disease that causes severe blistering with only the most minor contact.

Jill Vedder, wife of Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, is on the board of Heal EB, and she helped bring together a pretty cool collection items available for bid (most of which expire later today). Included in the collection are a ukulele signed by Vedder, an official Foo Fighters motorcycle jacket, an autographed No Doubt poster, and a collection of Heart memorabilia.

The full list of auction items is here. There was also a live auction last week, and Vedder showed up as a special guest to play some songs and meet some kids afflicted with EB. (Vedder has been everywhere lately, having played Neil Young’s annual Bridge School benefit concert last weekend, dropped in on Kings of Leon for a jam earlier in the month, and also found time to raise $1.7 million for the Obama campaign along the way.

If you’re a sports fan, there’s also a healthy collection of those items up for grabs too, including jerseys signed by New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen, and baseballs signed by the likes of Bob Gibson, Andre Dawson, Roberto Alomar, Gaylord Perry, Lou Brock, and A.J. Burnett. And for the foot fetishists in the building, Gisele Bundchen also signed a pair of heels she wore at the Met Ball.

Beyonce says 'I Was Here' in World Humanitarian Day performance

Today, the U.N. must be celebrating Bey Day: Beyonce just released a new video for her song “I Was Here” in order to mark World Humanitarian Day (August 19), which honors volunteers who risk their own safety to help others and encourages regular people to help someone in need.

Earlier this month, the singer performed at the U.N. General Assembly in New York, wearing a sleek, space-age white gown, and belting out her single before a giant wrap-around screen, which displayed footage of humanitarian efforts around the world. Directors Kenzo Digital (who has worked with Kanye West) and Sophie Muller (who recently helmed No Doubt’s “Settle Down” video) captured the footage for the video, which will premiere on big screens in across the globe, including Dubai, Geneva, New York’s Times Square.

Be warned: Just like in her Live at the Roseland performance of the song, there are tears. Watch below.

Aurora-Cover-Hans-Zimmer.jpg

Dane Cook notwithstanding, the acts of goodwill regarding the Aurora tragedy that took place during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises have yet to slow down. DC Comics has delayed its next Batman publication out of deference, Warner Bros. (the studio behind the Christopher Nolan trilogy-ender) has made substantial donations to various Aurora charities, and Christian Bale has been visiting hospitalized victims during the week. Now, Hans Zimmer is chipping in: the composer behind the Dark Knight Rises soundtrack has written song dedicated to the victims of the senseless tragedy. READ FULL STORY »

“Allow to me to reintroduce myself,” a beaming, tuxedo-clad Jay-Z teased at the top of his charity show at Carnegie Hall in New York City last night.

He didn’t have to, of course, but when you’ve got an evergreen show-starter like “Public Service Announcement” on your hands, you use it.

The giddy new father was kicking off the first half of his two-night stand at the hallowed venue, the proceeds of which will benefit United Way of New York City and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation.

Backed by a 36-piece orchestra, Jay swaggered across the stage with a bottle of champagne in his hand (“It’s tea,” he claimed) as images of Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects and other hometown signifiers splashed on the wall behind him.

'Soul Train' fans honor Don Cornelius with a dancing flash mob: Watch it here

What’s the best way to remember Soul Train godfather Don Cornelius? Some 100 fans in Times Square this weekend knew the answer: a dance line.

Organized online and executed on Broadway in the heart of Manhattan, the Soul Train flash mob emulated the show’s trademark setup for a good 45 minutes among a gaggle of surprised tourists.

The event was a (literally) moving tribute to honor the show’s late founder and host Cornelius, who was found dead in his Sherman Oaks home last Wednesday.

“Don Cornelius was a big influence in my life, and I just wanted to pay tribute,” said disc jockey Jon Quick, who was holding up speakers at the event. “He was playing the music that nobody else wanted to play. He was an amazing man.”

Watch a convention of flash mobbers bring love, peace, and soul to Times Square in the video below:

Anxious to hear Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan, the massive, 76-track Tribute Album for a Good Cause from Amnesty International?

No worries — Miley Cyrus has got your back.

In conjunction with Amnesty International, the nose-ringed 19-year-old has released the official video for her country-fried cover of Dylan’s “You’re Going to Make Me Lonesome When You Go.”

The song, off 1975′s Blood on the Tracks, loses some of its original spunk and humor (not to mention harmonica), but Cyrus does a decent job with her safe reading of the folk favorite.

Check out the video below to see for yourself:
