Gregg Allman cancels tour due to illness

Doctors have ordered Gregg Allman, the Southern rock legend and frontman of the Allman Brothers Band, to cancel a series of upcoming tour dates because of a respiratory infection.

He will require several days of hospitalization and four to six weeks of bed rest, so the 13 dates scheduled between August 26 and September 15 have been called off. Allman will still play the famous Sturgis Rally in South Dakota tonight, and he hopes to make up the canceled dates later in the year.

This is the latest in a long line of health-related issues for the 63-year-old Allman, who has Hepatitis C and is still recovering from a liver transplant he received last year. He had already canceled a series of shows in Europe back in June thanks to the same respiratory ailment. “His doctor hoped that with rest he’d get better, but unfortunately the issue has persisted,” Allman’s publicist said in a statement released yesterday. “Treatment is going to involve several days of hospitalization and 4-6 weeks of bed rest at home.”

Get well soon, Gregg! The man who wrote “Midnight Rider” deserves a little rest anyway. And hey—it will give you time to work on that undoubtedly-wild memoir.
