Greyson Chance tells us why he's a huge KISS fan

Here’s something you might not know about Greyson Chance, the 13-year-old Oklahoman whose YouTube covers of artists like Lady Gaga are so popular: He’s a big fan of ’70s rockers KISS.

“I actually watched the Glee episode where they did Gaga and KISS,” says Chance, who just stopped by EW’s office. “I was like, ‘Wow, I’m going to start getting into this.’ I bought the KISS biggest hits record on iTunes, and it just started blowing my mind.”

His favorite KISS tunes are the two performed by the Glee cast this May: “Shout It Out Loud” and “Beth,” both originally released in 1976. “I love them because they can get up on stage and they can party so hard with these big rock party songs [like ‘Shout It Out Loud’],” he says. “With their makeup and all, they’re so dramatic. I love theatricality. The way that they can do that and then go into a slow ballad like ‘Beth,’ it’s very inspirational.”

Chance is currently busy recording his debut album for release next spring on Ellen DeGeneres’ eleveneleven record label. Seasoned music industry professionals including Ron Fair and the Matrix are helping him in the studio. Despite his KISS fandom, he says his album is more likely to draw inspiration from contemporary bands like Snow Patrol and Coldplay.

Are you surprised that Greyson Chance is a KISS fan? Looking forward to his album? Let us know.

YouTube sensation Greyson Chance performs debut single on Ellen: Watch here

Thirteen-year-old Greyson Chance won the YouTube hits of many and even caught talk show host Ellen DeGeneres‘ eye for singing Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” earlier this year in the sixth grade. Since then he’s signed to and become DeGeneres’ marquee artist on her eleveneleven record label. Yesterday on her show he performed his first single from his forthcoming first album. Starting off on the piano. Chance dipped into his ballad “Waiting Outside the Lines.” It’s a pretty grown up song in comparison to the bubble gum pop cuts Justin Bieber sings. But the young man doesn’t come off silly singing about getting through rough times and bad experiences.

Check out the performance after the jump and let us know what you think.

Chance, 13, just uploaded his version of Augustana‘s “Fire” to his YouTube channel. It’s nothing flashy — just Chance sitting at the piano in his L.A. apartment, playing and singing his heart out. Click through to the jump to check it out.

Ellen DeGeneres starts label, signs Greyson Chance

Greyson-ChanceImage Credit: Michael Rozman/AP ImagesEllen DeGeneres likes “Paparazzi” kid Greyson Chance so much that she’s started her own record label in order to sign him, People reports. “Greyson… inspired me to start a record label called eleveneleven,” DeGeneres told the mag. “He is my first artist, and we are making a record together.”

It’s no surprise that Ellen is a big music fan. She’s made that clear for years on her talk show, and of course she recently took a permanent seat behind the judges’ table on American Idol. She’s also been instrumental in Chance’s meteoric rise to fame, booking the 12-year-old singer on her show after seeing his “Paparazzi” clip on YouTube. The rest is history.

What do you think of this news? Who else do you think Ellen should sign to eleveneleven?

Sixth-grade 'Paparazzi' kid's choir teacher sings his praises

Before Greyson Michael Chance’s cover of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” became a YouTube smash, the Oklahoma sixth-grader was already a star in Kelly Cheek’s classroom. “He’s an amazing student to have,” Cheek, who’s been Chance’s choir teacher at Edmond, Okla.’s Cheyenne Middle School since January, tells the Music Mix. “He’s always playing the piano in class. The kids are always wanting him to sing for them. He’s the reason why I wanted to teach, because of kids like him.”

Chance represented Cheyenne at an annual choir festival for Edmond’s five middle schools this April 12. Cheek says he was originally planning to cover 3OH!3’s “Still Around” before a last-minute switch to “Paparazzi.” “He decided about a week before…He brought that song in one day after school and sang it for me. I just said, ‘You have to do that one! It’s amazing!'”

Chance’s Gaga cover (watch it again after the jump) has made him into an overnight celeb. He’s already appeared on new fan Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show. And naturally, he’s the talk of Cheyenne Middle School. “It’s been insane,” laughs Cheek. “Our phones have been ringing off the hook. The kids are so excited, we can hardly get them to do anything but talk about Greyson.”
