GWAR covers Pet Shop Boys, pays tribute to Oderus Urungus

Every week, bands stop by the A.V. Club to cover songs for the site’s “A.V. Undercover” webseries. This week, thrash-metal outfit GWAR made their third appearance and—yes, you’re reading this correctly—performed their version of the 1984 Pet Shop Boys smash hit “West End Girls.”

GWAR’s members style themselves as barbaric interplanetary warriors, but earlier thisyear they lost their charismatic frontman, Oderus Urungus (Earth name: Dave Brockie). The group’s “West End Girls” cover soars because it includes a stirring tribute to Urungus, from a group that’s not exactly known for its tenderness. READ FULL STORY

Meet Vulvatron, GWAR's new female vocalist

When GWAR founder and frontman David Brockie, known as Oderus Urungus, died this past March the sci-fi metal band took a break and didn’t try to regroup for months. But now, GWAR is getting back on their feet and even have added another voice to the group: Vulvatron, according to Wondering Sound.

Vulvatron, who joins fellow vocalist Beefcake the Mighty, is the first female to join since 2000. The singer, whose non-stage name is Kim Dylla, joined the band onstage for the first time at Chicago’s Riot Fest Sept. 12 wearing a spiky, purple, butt-baring get-up. READ FULL STORY

GWAR frontman Brockie found dead in Virginia home

Dave Brockie, frontman for the heavy metal band GWAR, has been found dead in his Richmond, Va., home at age 50.

Richmond police spokeswoman Dionne Waugh says officers were called to home shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday for a report of a dead person. When officers arrived, Brockie — who went by the stage name Oderus Urungus — was found dead inside the home.

Detectives don’t suspect foul play at this time and Waugh says the medical examiner’s office will determine cause of death.

The Grammy-nominated band founded in 1984 is known for its comically grotesque costumes, stage antics and vulgar lyrics.

GWAR released its latest album in 2013 and recently toured Australia and Japan.

In 2011, lead guitarist 34-year-old Cory Smoot was found dead on the band’s tour bus.
