Five reasons you should see Hall & Oates on tour

I’m not sure when it became ironic to dig Hall & Oates, but it bothers me deeply. Sure, I get that we’re all supposed to be so friggin’ cool by now that it’s impossible to love something without wrapping air quotes around it. But the blue-eyed soul duo’s awesomeness is so indisputable, it should be immune to winking snark. After all, these are the guys who wrote “Sara Smile”, “Maneater”, and one of the most perfect break-up tunes of all time, “She’s Gone”. There’s nothing guilty about the pleasure these songs bring the first, second, or hundredth time you hear them. And if you’ve never seen them performed live, do yourself a favor and check out the band’s current “Do What You Want, Be Who You Are” tour.

Still not convinced? Here’s five reasons you should see Hall & Oates live…

1. Because they’ll be wearing clothes a whole lot cooler than these:

2. Because Oates is…gasp!…going mustache-less these days.

3. Because there’s nothing comparable to the sound of a few thousand people trying to reproduce the hand-clap that comes 44 seconds into this song…

4. Because they’ll also be playing this…

5. Because when we recently saw them play the MGM Grand at Foxwoods in Connecticut, Hall never once uttered the line, “Here’s one you may not know from our new album”.

Bird and the Bee cover Hall & Oates' 'Sara Smile': An EW exclusive stream

bird-and-the-beeImage Credit: Brigitte Sire When multi-instrumentalist and producer Greg Kurstin (he’s worked with everyone from Britney and Kylie to Lily Allen and Little Boots) and singer-songwriter Inara George, a.k.a. indie-pop duo The Bird and the Bee, take on a covers album, they aim high. Like, Hall & Oates high.

The third full-length from the duo (dog in pic not included) will be the faux-loftily titled Interpreting the Masters, Vol. 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall & John Oates, featuring their take on H&O classics like “Maneater,” “Rich Girl,” “Private Eyes” and the exclusive-to-EW ballad “Sarah Smile.” Stream it below, two weeks before the official March 23 release date:

Daryl Hall on his unexpected Grammy nomination, why he might not go to the ceremony, and the current state of John Oates' mustache.

It is fair to say that Daryl Hall wasn’t exactly glued to last’s night Grammy TV special, at which it was announced that he and John Oates were nominated in the “Best performance by a duo or group with vocals” category for a live version of their 1976 hit “Sara Smile.” “I didn’t even know the nominations were happening,” says the blue-eyed soul man. “I found out when my manager called me. It was a big surprise.” One reason Hall wasn’t all that interested in the Grammys? The Grammys have never been all that interested in him. In fact, Hall has only been nominated twice and has never won. That’s right: Daryl Hall has never won a Grammy! What have the Recording Academy been thinking all these years? “You ask them,” laughs the singer.

After the jump, Hall sizes up some of the other Grammy nominees and bars your writer from ever visiting his house. Boo! READ FULL STORY »

'The Cleveland Show': Watch Hall and Oates' devilish (and angel-ish) cameo

This Sunday, Hall and Oates cameo on Family Guy spin off The Cleveland Show, and you can see their appearance below. I don’t know what relevance it has to the plot, but I do know Oates has allowed himself to be the butt of jokes abut his lack of stature (both professional and actual). That makes him a big man in my book. And, as the book in question is the new biggie from Stephen King, he will actually fit in it!

I jest, of course.

Dare I ask if you can go for this cameo? I dare! I dare!

Hall and Oates: Can Rachael Ray get our heroes into the Hall of Fame?

Rachel-Ray-Hall-Oates_lRegular Music Mix readers will know that we love us some Hall and Oates, whether we’re getting Daryl to nominate his five favorite H&O numbers, pitting them against Journey in our Guilty Pleasures tournament, or yakking with Zooey Deschanel about the genius of “You Make My Dreams.”

Now we learn that Rachael Ray is also a big fan of the blue-eyed soulsters. Apparently, the TV cook-and-chatterer recently recorded a show with the duo and was so outraged to discover that the they have not been inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame that she has launched a campaign to get them in. “Hall and Oates has my vote!” the Rayster declared in a blog item two days. I’m not actually sure she has a vote in this matter. But what the hey, if we send enough support her way maybe she’ll send us some food!

Will you be joining her campaign? Or can you not go for that Rachael Ray telling you who to support? (No can do?)

Guilty Pleasures, Round One: Hall & Oates (6) vs. Poison (11)

EW’s Music Mix is searching for the Greatest Guilty Pleasure Musical Act of All Time. With 32 seeded contestants (see all the matchups), this tournament is sure to change hearts, minds, and lives for weeks to come. Read/listen to the following, and then cast your vote in the poll after the jump; reader comments will be used in subsequent rounds, so we encourage you to also post a comment explaining why you chose the way you did. Note: In case of a tie, please select the artist you feel more ashamed to adore. Thank you.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: The role of Savage Garden will be played by Poison for the remainder of this competition. Savage Garden were forced to drop out due to an unfortunate combination of astute reader response pointing out that somehow we totally forgot to put any hair metal on the list — a truly egregious oversight we hope has now been sufficiently remedied — and because certain proprietors of the Guilty Pleasures game could not come up with anything interesting to write about Savage Garden. The Music Mix regrets any confusion, and encourages fans of Savage Garden to leave their aggravated feedback about how the band is so totally not a guilty pleasure in the comments anyway.
