Twitter is a remarkable technology — allowing us to keep up with the made-up thoughts of a hologram and reduce all art to pithy put-downs and puns. It also provides access to the pyches of some of the biggest starts on the planet—including Justin Bieber, who had a weird little run with his smartphone on Sunday.

In the midst of what he referred to as a “Random Twitter Hour,” Bieber wrote, “Dear mariah yeeter…we have never met…so from the heart i just wanted to say…” with a link to this odd audio clip from the Borat movie.

Yeater is, of course, the woman who accused Bieber of impregnating her somewhere in the bowels of L.A.’s Staples Center after a concert. The paternity suit was withdrawn after Bieber took a DNA test proving he was not the father of Yeater’s infant son.

The rest of his “Random Twitter Hour,” which goes out to some 21 million followers, was indeed random, featuring such nuggets as “Why does David Ortiz look like Robocop?” and simply, “My loins.”

Meanwhile, you can no longer re-tweet Nicki Minaj’s random thoughts, because the platinum rapper has shut down her account. READ FULL STORY »

Adele_240.jpg

Fresh off their name-checks in the Time 100, Adele and Rihanna have more kudos to brag about. They’re leading the pack of Billboard Music Awards nominees, along with Lady Gaga, LMFAO, and Lil Wayne. Adele scored 18 nods — including Top Artist, Top Female Artist, and Top Billboard 200 Artist — off the mega-sales of her album 21 and its lead single “Rolling in the Deep.” “Party Rockers” LMFAO will be in the house behind thanks to 17 nods. Rihanna could win up to 13 trophies, and Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne could be walking home with a lot of hardware, after netting 10 nods apiece. Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift pen song for 'Believe'

Apparently Taylor Swift wasn’t too upset about getting Punk’d by Justin Bieber recently. The post-teen princess teamed up with the Canadian wunderkind to write a song for his next album, Believe. Per MTV News, Swift will be a little bit country to Bieber’s a little bit zebra pants, though there’s no word on whether she provided vocals on the track, à la Hunger Games megahit “Safe and Sound,” or if she’ll simply take a writing credit.

Swift joins a roster of heavy hitters on the collab, including Kanye West and Drake. Said Bieber, “With my music, it doesn’t only stay in a box. It’s so out there. Everything is so different and that’s why I’m so happy with this album.” “Boyfriend,” Bieber’s first single from Believe, peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the singer recently sent shivers down the spines of his followers when news of collaborations with Carly Rae Jepsen and One Direction hit the Internet. Teen idols, assemmmmble!

In a move clearly designed to make Twitter, Tumblr, and teen girls simultaneously explode, Justin Bieber has hit the studio to record a new song with Carly Rae Jepsen — and maybe One Direction too.

Two days ago, “Call Me Maybe” Jepsen told MTV News that she and Biebs collaborated on one song together when they first met in the studio. “It’s not too dance-y,” she explained. “It’s more intimate. It’s a duet.”

And yesterday, One Direction’s Niall Horan tweeted, “In the studio with our boy @justinbieber last night, it’s gona sound great!” Fellow bandmate Liam Payne corroborated the story with a tweet of his own: “Got a first listen to justin biebers new album yesterday wowww big songs!!! Its gunna be a smash… Expect the unexpected.” Bieber responded: “thanks buddy. good chillin with u guys.” READ FULL STORY »

Justin Bieber's much-anticipated new single 'Boyfriend' finally arrives: Listen here!

justin-bieber-boyfriend-blog

A few weeks ago, Justin Bieber dropped in on the new single by Far East Movement, giving us the first non-Yuletide taste of the plucky Canadian since the release of Never Say Never at the top of 2011. At midnight last night, he struck again, this time in the form of the first single from his forthcoming album Believe.

The track is called “Boyfriend,” and it’s built around a woozy keyboard loop, some hollow kick drums, a nice little digi-coustic guitar snap, and Bieber’s newly evolved grown-up voice. Produced by Mike Posner, “Boyfriend” proves that Bieber’s role model is Justin Timberlake, as this is the sort of musical and attitude adjustment that helped JT transition from teen-scream inspiration to serious artist.

Give it a spin below.: READ FULL STORY »

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez love Carly Rae Jepsen -- do you?

CARLY-RAE-JEPSEN

You may not have heard of Carly Rae Jepsen yet, but you probably know her friends.

The starlet, who was recently signed to Justin Bieber’s Schoolboy Records, got a major boost when a grainy video featuring tween dreams like Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale, members of Big Time Rush, and Hannah Montana‘s Moises Arias dancing to Jepsen’s new single “Call Me Maybe” hit the net. In 11 days, the video has netted over 13 million views.

The Disney/Nickelodeon mashup blew up when Bieber tweeted it to his 17.5 million followers, and all the exposure it’s gotten has driven up view counts for Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” video as well.

The clip has more than doubled its views since the dance-party clip exploded, and the song is climbing into iTunes’ Top 10.

Check out both videos below: READ FULL STORY »

Anybody who doesn’t care much about the music of Justin Bieber should probably find a monastery to hide in for a few months, because the 17-year-old Canadian pop sensation is about to unleash an onslaught of new material.

The lead track from his forthcoming album Believe is expected to land in a few weeks, but until then, he has lent his pipes to “Live My Life,” the new single by Far East Movement. (The group’s new album Dirty Bass is due to hit stores soon.)

The track, produced by turned-to-11 disco maven RedOne, finds the men of Far East Movement tapping into the same club-friendly swagger that sent “Like a G6″ to the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

Bieber doesn’t have to do a whole lot of heavy lifting on “Live My Life” (he just croons the hook), but it’s a good first dip into the waters of his new baritone.

While we’ve already heard a full album of his evolving voice, it’s harder to tell where it’s going when the focus is on Yuletide cheer. “Live My Life” is the first real commercial peek at what’s next; listen to it below. READ FULL STORY »

Album Sales: Michael Buble tops the chart (again), and Adele logs her best sales week yet

Michael-Buble

Michael Bublé’s Christmas has only been in stores for nine weeks, but it’s had no trouble becoming the 2nd highest-selling album of 2011, behind Adele’s 21.

This week, Bublé topped the Billboard 200 for a fifth straight week, selling 467,000 copies and lifting his holiday collection’s total to a very merry 2.43 million (all five of Michael Bublé’s albums have topped the 2 million mark). Expect a hefty drop next week, though, now that Christmas Day has passed.

In second place, Adele’s 21 notched its best-ever sales week (in its 45th week of release!), moving 399,000 units. The album’s previous best week came with its debut in February, when 21 sold 352,000. This year, 21 has sold an astonishing 5.68 million Stateside, and on top of reclaiming the No. 1 spot next week, the album should pass the 6 million mark early in the new year. READ FULL STORY »

Mark Wahlberg wants to make Justin Bieber a movie star

justin-bieber

Mark Wahlberg would really prefer the world not remember him for inspiring sweet sensations at the dawn of his career. Remarkably, he has mostly accomplished that feat over the past decade and a half — carving out a major career for himself as an actor (though he’d probably rather be thought of as Mickey Ward than the guy who figures out that plants are killing people).

Apparently, Wahlberg sees a similar future for Justin Bieber. In a recent conversation with MTV about his upcoming movie Contraband (whose trailer looks like one of the fake ones that runs before Tropic Thunder), Wahlberg talked about casting Bieber in a dramatic role in a future film that has something to do with basketball. The artist formerly known as Marky Mark says that he sees something in the Canadian pop pinup that let him know he can handle a dramatic role.

“I’m pretty intuitive,” Wahlberg explained. “I see the guy and spent time with him, and you see what he does and how he does it, and then you actually have a conversation with him, and it’s there.”

Wahlberg may have a point. READ FULL STORY »
