Katy Perry's 'E.T.' video feat. Kanye West: Watch the bizarro sci-fi fest here!

Post-apocalyptic landscape, Kanye West floating in zero gravity, the kiss of a woman turning a robot into flesh-and-blood… it can only mean one thing: Katy Perry is officially in orbit for her “E.T.” music video.

This spacey, robotic jam might not have been an album highlight, but thanks to Kanye West’s verses concerning his commitment to alien sex, the song is currently a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as fodder for this awesomely bizzare sci-fi video, which impressively resists any obvious Spielberg references. Today in Covers: Katy Perry does Gaga's 'Born This Way,' and Selena Gomez does Jessie J's 'Price Tag'

Covering songs is fun! And singers love to do it! Just see the recent spate of covers, with pop stars taking on the songs of other pop stars.

On Sunday night at a concert in in Houston, Disney princess Selena Gomez made her love for rising poptress Jessie J apparent with a stirring performance of “Price Tag,” while yesterday, Katy Perry did the same thing with current Lady Gaga anthem “Born This Way.” (Note the screams as she uttered the opening line, “My mama told me when I was young / that we were already superstars.” This crowd loves Gaga!)

The criticism I’ve heard of both covers doesn’t have anything to do with how Selena or Katy performed the songs, but rather that they performed them at all. Is it a bit early for one pop star to be covering other pop stars’ songs that are currently on the charts?

I don’t know what the protocol is, but I get why that would seem a little egregious: Basically, these covers could be seen as plays for attention. Like, are your own songs—or even older songs by other artists—not enough to generate the buzz you desire? Regardless of that line of thinking, I still rather enjoyed both covers, especially Katy’s acoustic take on “Born This Way.” Watch them both here:

Arcade Fire's manager bites back at music exec's open letter to Grammys: 'They just made the best album'

Arcade FireArcade Fire manager Scott Rodger has (arcade) fired back at allegations that his Canadian indie rockers knew about their “Album of the Year” Grammy win ahead of time.

Rodger insists there was “no big plot” in spite of what industry player Steve Stoute implied in a full-page ad in the New York Times, which Rodger calls “a nice piece of self-publicity.”

Rodger was referring to Stoute’s vitriolic letter in Sunday’s Times which marveled at the “sheer coincidence” that Arcade Fire were ready to play out the awards show immediately after nabbing their Grammy.

As for whether the least-known band on the Grammy broadcast was in cahoots with insider masterminds and network TV execs, Rodger had this to say:

“Arcade Fire had the final slot on the Grammys as the ratings are low at the end of the broadcast. It really is that simple. We were one of the least-known acts on the bill for a network audience. Don’t you think I wanted a better slot for the band?”

Rodger also said their second performance was not guaranteed, as the producers would have cut it if the awards show had run overtime. In fact, the last half of “Ready to Start” was still drowned-out by sponsorship messages and completely cut from international broadcasts.

Katy Perry covers Rihanna, Jay-Z, Willow Smith: watch the video here

Put her on a candy-cane stool and Katy Perry can actually bring it pretty well live, haters.

Looking like a bridesmaid at Julia Goolia‘s wedding and singing like Sophie B. Hawkins with a Hova fetish, Perry tore into acoustic versions of friend (and birthday girl) Rihanna’s “Only Girl in the World,” Jay-Z’s “Big Pimpin’,” and Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” at a concert in Lisbon last night.

Bonus points for bedazzled-flute karaoke, delivered via velvet pillow: READ FULL STORY »

Kanye West abducts Katy Perry on singer's new single, 'E.T'

kanye-perryImage Credit: Gilbert Carrasquillo/FilmMagic.com; Glenn Harris/PR PhotosKanye West might be known for his artistic talent (and inflated sense of self). But today he is literally out of this world. And Katy Perry‘s wants him. This morning the remix to the pop songstress’ “E.T.” hit the internet. As soon as Kanye’s spaceship hovers into Katy’s life, she hopes to be the only one he abducts.

Kanye refuses at first, saying his is a life crazier than she can imagine. “Welcome to the danger zone,” he raps. “Step into the fantasy/ You are not invited to the the other side of sanit.y” Katy won’t take no for an answer, though:  “[I] Wanna be your victim/ [I'm] Ready for abduction,” she coos on the hook. And of course, Kanye gives in (who wouldn’t?), promising they’ll hit “a bar out in Mars.” Then he’ll “disrobe” and “probe” her. Intense stuff, right?
