How Mumford & Sons and Taylor Swift are causing a seismic shift in the music industry

The biggest debut of 2012 doesn’t belong to a glossy pop act like One Direction or Justin Bieber.

Sure, those boys have hordes of teenage girls ready to download their music at the drop of a tweet, but they’ve got nothing on the scruffy gents of Mumford & Sons, whose new disc, Babel sold 600,000 copies in its first seven days. (The next-best opening? Bieber’s Believe, with 374,000 in week 1.)

Babel‘s success (it has now led the chart for three weeks and sold 865,000 copies total) is indicative of a larger shift within the music industry. As pop music morphs into a glow-stick dance party, country acts have adopted the traditional pop sound. That leaves Mumford and the burgeoning Americana and folk genres (think acoustic guitars, banjos, and innumerable fitted tweed vests) to fill the country void. Did you get all that? Rihanna talks Chris Brown and Robert Pattinson in new 'Vogue'

Rihanna’s landed the cover of the new issue of Vogue, and, yes, the she does explain her scandalous relationship with a certain you-know-who: Robert Pattinson.

Oh, sorry, that’s probably not who you had in mind, but as the cover story explains, recent tabloid reports had some wondering whether RiRi and R-Patz were getting flirty via text message. When told about this, Rihanna apparently “expressed horror and pronounced it ‘the most bullsh-t ever,’ but she also seemed amused.”

Speaking of horrors: Chris Brown came up a few times over the course of the story as well. First off, Rihanna explains that she is indeed single and hasn’t been on a date in two years. (She says “no one asks.”) With that out of the way, she also confirms that she and Brown still share a friendly relationship — and that she doesn’t care what the public thinks of it. READ FULL STORY

The 2012 MTV VMAs: Seven questions going into the show

About 20 years ago, everybody made the same joke: “How can MTV have a Video Music Awards when they don’t air videos anymore?” (And in our comments section, people still make that same joke every year.)

But think about it, has the show ever been about the actual Moonmen as much as it is about the zeitgeisty memes, outsized personalities, and general pageantry of the broadcast?

Think about last year’s show: While everybody remembers the Beyoncé baby-bump reveal, Lady Gaga’s drag show, and Adele’s tear-jerking triumph, does anybody recall what clip won Video of the Year? (It was Katy Perry’s “Firework.”) This year’s show, which beams live from Los Angeles’ massive Staples Center Thursday night at 8 PM Eastern, prides itself on first-run moments, including new tracks from Green Day and Alicia Keys and the first live performances of new singles by Taylor Swift and Pink.

But since there’s not a whole lot of investment in the winner of Best Male Video (unless you literally have invested something with your local bookie), here are the seven questions you should keep on your mind if you tune in. (And even if you don’t, you’re still invited to hang out with the Music Mix tomorrow evening, as we’ll have a live blog, photo galleries, and a full breakdown of the show’s best performances and biggest moments.)

How will host Kevin Hart do?
The VMAs have had some pretty big names host the show before, though there have really only been a handful of memorable ones (see: Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, and pre-Fox News Dennis Miller). In the last few years, the role of host has been either ignored completely (neither the 2011 or 2007 shows had hosts) or given to people ill-suited for the job (Russell Brand, Chelsea Handler, and Jack Black all sort of punted it). On the Charts: Taylor Swift's big sales, Flo Rida's 'Whistle' blows up, The Lumineers say 'Hey'

Taylor Swift’s new single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” may just sell the most downloads ever! ever! ever! in its first week.

Released on Monday night, the song is reportedly heading to first-week downloads in the 600,000 range, which would make the breakup anthem the fastest selling song ever by a female artist. (Lady Gaga currently holds that record with “Born This Way,” which was downloaded 448,000 times in its first frame.)

There’s one song Taylor probably will probably not outsell, though: “Right Round” by Flo Rida feat. Ke$ha, which sold 636,000 songs in a single week in 2009. Still, if she climbs past Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend,” which moved 521,000 editions in its first week, she’ll have the second-best sales week in digital history. Not too shabby.

Rick Ross: The large and in charge rapper’s fifth album God Forgives, I Don’t became his fourth number one album, selling 219,000 copies in its first week. The sales total was the largest rap debut since Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded bowed with 253,000 copies earlier this year.

Carly Rae Jepsen: “Call Me Maybe,” which this week passed the 5 million mark in sales, logged a ninth week atop Billboard’s Hot 100. The track, the first off her just-announced Kiss (due Sept. 18), is now the longest-running number one single in 2012 over Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know,” which held the peak position for eight weeks and is still sitting pretty at No. 6. Katy Perry scores ninth number one on Top 40, ties Rihanna for record

Trying to prove which pop star is the best in 2012 usually brings out the worst in the Internet. For proof, see every YouTube comment thread ever.

But if you’re judging by sheer quantity of radio number ones, the case is closed — and Katy Perry and Rihanna come out on top.

Perry earned her ninth number one single on the Billboard Top 40 chart this week with “Wide Awake,” the final chapter from the unfettered pop onslaught that is Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection.

Perry’s sophomore album already made some chart history back when “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart last summer, making Perry is the only other artist besides Michael Jackson to have churned out five number ones from a single album.

“Wide Awake” puts Perry in the same company as Miss Where-Have-You-Been Rihanna, who also ties the record with nine number ones. That means both now beat out Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and P!nk, who have each had seven number ones on the Top 40 chart, and Beyoncé and Mariah Carey, who have both logged six. Who would have thought that the slightly awkward teenager who once starred in a Destiny’s Child tribute performance would go on to earn more number ones than Bey herself?

Also noteworthy: Perry did this in only two albums, while Rihanna reached her mark over the course of six. Make of that what you will, ravenous Internet fan club enthusiasts, but it looks like there’s no exact formula for being a pop juggernaut these days. Case in point: Rihanna received five MTV Video Music Award nominations Tuesday, with Perry following close behind with four. Both are up for the top prize, Video of the Year, for “We Found Love” and for “Wide Awake.”

In other chart dominance news, “Wide Awake” is also Perry’s 10th number one on the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart. A few years ago, claiming success there would have been the big-fish-small-pond equivalent of claiming you were the greatest Candyland player in all of Iceland.

But now that electronic beats, dubsteb breakdowns, and a general appreciation for bleeps and boops are the norm in popular music, this other Perry accomplishment is probably nothing to sneeze at.

Ten things we learned about Justin Bieber from his 'Rolling Stone' cover story

Well, well — it looks like Justin Bieber’s gotten himself on the cover of Rolling Stone all over again.

So, what fun new stuff is in this issue’s story that wasn’t in the one from February of last year? For one, adulthood: Bieber’s previous RS cover labeled him “Super Boy,” but this time around, he’s deemed “HOT. READY. LEGAL.”

Celebrate 4th of July with Katy Perry, Will Smith, and more in our Spotify holiday playlist

Even though it awkwardly sits in the middle of the week this year, the Fourth of July remains the most ideal holiday: There’s no psychological trauma surrounding giving the right gift, you usually don’t have to travel to fully enjoy it, and there’s no somber occasion that makes you feel guilty about getting a day off from work. It’s simply an excuse to go outside, put meat on fire, and watch colorful things explode.

Of course, it’s also important to crank up some music as loud as humanly possible in order to fully enjoy the Fourth of July. That’s why EW has put together a special Spotify playlist for Independence Day, which features 29 killer songs sure to upgrade your backyard barbecue. There are odes to the summer months (Will Smith’s “Summertime,” Mungo Jerry’s “In the Summertime,” Flaming Lips “It’s Summertime”), hat tips to the home of the brave (Neil Young’s “Keep On Rockin’ in the Free World,” Elton John’s “Philadelphia Freedom), and some actual songs called “4th of July” by the likes of Aimee Mann, X, and Bruce Springsteen.

Katy Perry starting her own record label

The California Gurl is growing up.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, 27-year-old Katy Perry revealed her plans to start her own record label. Her new enterprise doesn’t have a name yet, but “I’m preparing for it now,” she assured THR.

“And when this record label does come to fruition, I’m going to try and avoid the things that take away any fighting chance for an artist to have financial success,” Perry said. “As people are coming to me with opportunities, I’m thinking, ‘How would I want to be treated?’”

It’s unclear where her imprint will live, but it’ll likely be at EMI, where Perry is currently signed (with Capitol Records). As one EMI executive told THR, “Katy is one of our crown jewels.”

Katy Perry smacks Prince Charming (a.k.a. Russell Brand) in 'Wide Awake' video -- WATCH

Katy Perry’s latest single, “Wide Awake,” is certainly a pop delight, even if its lyrics are fairly generic (“I’m wide awake/And now it’s clear to me/That everything you see/Ain’t always what it seems”).

But Perry claims the video for the song — which she’s using to promote her 3-D movie, Part of Me — is nothing short of autobiographical and explains the journey she’s been on for the last two years.

“It’s kind of like the labyrinth of my life in the last two years,” Perry said during an MTV First presentation, where she sat down with MTV’s Sway to discuss the clip. “I just wanted to tell a story about myself kind of going through this journey, maybe sometimes trying to get out of the maze. There’s good parts, there’s bad parts, and the whole time there’s the younger version of me leading me through.”

Naturally, Perry referenced the struggle that’s outlined in “Wide Awake” and alluded to the fact — but didn’t explicitly say — that much of the song describes her feelings about her recent divorce from comedian Russell Brand. “Of course there’s been a lot of things that went on last year that I had to get through and overcome and obstacles that I had to, you know, go through,” Perry explained. “I think what kept me going is just, like, the purity of my belief in music and my love for music.”

Whether or not you buy into the platitudes that Perry is selling — sure, she’s had a rough year, and a divorce is a disaster for anyone — the video for “Wide Awake” seems to be just what her fans might want from her at this point in time. There’s a fantastical, whimsical vibe to it that finds Perry teaming up with her own self as a child.

The clip launches with a snippet from the shoot for her “California Gurls” and ends with the concert tour, book-ending the two crazy years she’s spent promoting her blockbuster album Teenage Dream. There’s a genius moment where the princess-like Perry emerges from darkness to find Prince Charming — and promptly smacks him.

The only thing that would have made the moment better was if the guy had looked a little bit more like Russell Brand. Check it out yourself below:
