Kelly Clarkson, here's our dream track list for a covers-only album

Kelly Clarkson has gone and done it again.

This weekend’s cover of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” has fans reduced to beautiful disasters over how she can apparently master a cover in any genre. It’s no surprise considering how quickly Clarkson proved herself a vocal dynamo on the first season of American Idol, absolutely shattering the show’s glorified-karaoke format.

EW has previously gone on record and urged Clarkson to record a covers-only album, but I’ll take that plea one step further and suggest the specific tracks she’s previously performed during the beloved fan-request portion of her tours. Now that we’ve heard how stunning she sounds on low-quality YouTube videos, I’m confident that Kelly fanatics would throw down good money to experience these covers with a little production value.

The tracks I’ve chosen below aren’t necessarily her 17 best covers—because, let’s face it, every track is pretty much tied at No. 1—they’re most representative of her mind-blowing range as a performer and the friends she can (must!) enlist from her career.

Kelly Clarkson covers Taylor Swift's 'Shake It Off'

Kelly Clarkson covered Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” Saturday evening—and even got Swift’s stamp of approval.

In a fan-recorded video of the performance, Clarkson introduces “Shake It Off” as “one of [her] favorite songs out right now.” She goes on to infuse the pop song with some soul, and finishes with a note on Tay: “Seriously, everybody gives Taylor Swift a hard time, but she can write a hook,” Clarkson says. “I’m just sayin’.” READ FULL STORY

CMA nominations 2013: The snubs and surprises

Now that the 47th Annual CMA award nominations have been announced, here are a few thoughts on who made the cut, who was sorely left out — and the things that just don’t make much sense:

SURPRISE! Kacey Musgraves The Nashville newcomer scored six nominations (five for her own music, one for co-writing Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart”), which tied pack-leader Taylor Swift. Musgraves may not have the sales power of Swift, but she clearly has the industry support. Not many Best New Artist nominees also find themselves competing for awards like Best Female Artist or Album of the Year, a category that her disc Same Trailer Different Park absolutely deserves to win.

SNUB: Carrie Underwood An acclaimed album, four number one singles, and a 110-date arena tour (not to mention her new Sunday Night Football duties) were not enough to finally earn the perennial CMA Awards host her first Entertainer of the Year nomination. Annoyingly, this snub has been going on for a while. Methinks there must be record label politics holding her back. How else do you explain Jason Aldean, whose recent singles have floundered, sneaking into the category ahead of her? READ FULL STORY

Kelly Clarkson is the ultimate wedding singer in new 'Tie It Up' video

In a knock-down, drag-out, musical battle royale between Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, who would win?

The answer, obviously, is Kelly Clarkson.

Okay, so maybe Kelly’s wedding reception-ready single “Tie It Up” isn’t going to generate sales as huge as “Roar” or “Applause.” But all the same, the song is bouncy, twangy, and earwormy enough to guarantee a place of honor at plenty of upcoming marriage celebrations. And its cute new video, which splices footage of wedding singer Kelly — flashing her own gorgeous engagement ring — with clips of normal people’s nuptials, is pure feel-good fun. (Yes, a few gay couples get featured; yes, in a perfect world, this wouldn’t be unusual enough to earn a special mention.)

Kelly Clarkson goes country on new single, 'Tie It Up': Hear it here!

Kelly Clarkson’s dabbled in country before — remember her 2010 duet with Jason Aldean? — but her latest single, the let’s-get-married come-on “Tie It Up,” isn’t dabbling. It’s straight-up country, with a straight-up blues-country beat.

Clarkson sent out the single’s cover art online and then debuted the song at CMA Fest, reportedly telling the audience, “I’ve been nervous all day because I wanted to be good for you!” She shouldn’t have worried: “Tie It Up” is feisty genre fun, while still making room for the typical Clarkson wail. It’s a vision of commitment that’s worth committing to.

Kelly Clarkson premieres 'People Like Us' video: Watch it here

Kelly Clarkson is a scientist who would like to take you to Oz.

At least that’s the message sent in the new video for her Greatest Hits single “People Like Us” (which is not a cover of the Talking Heads track of the same name, though that would have been pretty sweet too).

In the clip, Clarkson lords over a black and white laboratory where employees poke and prod at a young girl who happens to be in full color. Will Clarkson help the girl escape into the psychedelic outside world? Watch it below: READ FULL STORY

Blake Shelton to officiate Kelly Clarkson's wedding

Following her performance at Sunday night’s ACM Awards in Las Vegas, Clarkson revealed to Entertainment Tonight that Shelton will not only perform at her nuptials, he will conduct the ceremony as well. READ FULL STORY

Maroon 5 and Kelly Clarkson touring this summer

The summer tour schedule is already stuffed with superstar team-ups like Jay-Z & Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé & a dancing can of Pepsi (we assume). Now you can add one more pairing to that list.

This morning, Maroon 5 announced they will be headlining the 2013 Honda Civic Tour, and the bill will also feature Kelly Clarkson. PJ Morton, Rozzi Crane, and Tony Lucca round out the lineup for the mini-festival, which kicks off August 1 in St. Louis.

In a press release, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine said, “We are very excited to team up with the Honda Civic Tour. Kelly, PJ, Rozzi and Tony are all such unique and amazing artists. I’m really looking forward to hitting the road with them. Each night will be a great night of music.”

Maroon 5 continue to score with singles from last year’s Overexposed — the latest track “Daylight” currently sits at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been dominating radio as well. Meanwhile, Clarkson is touring in support of her compilation Greatest Hits: Chapter One, which spawned the new singles “Catch My Breath” and “People Like Us” (which, sadly, is not a Talking Heads cover).

Tickets for the Honda Civic Tour go on sale this Friday, April 6. Check out the full list of tour dates below.  READ FULL STORY
