CMT Music Awards: Best and worst of the broadcast

The actual winners were announced last night at the CMT Music Awards. But here are a few more honors from the telecast that you should feel free to weigh in on:
Best Overall Performance Willie Nelson assembled an all-star crew to help him sing the hilarious “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die.” The ponytailed veteran was joined by Darius Rucker, Toby Keith, Zac Brown, and Jamey Johnson, all of whom looked delighted to be sharing the stage with the legendary toker.
(Honorable Mention Little Big Town, who always sound fantastic, delivered a fun rendition of their summer single “Pontoon.” On a night when A-listers like Kenny Chesney, the Zac Brown Band, and Luke Bryan delivered competent but forgettable performances, theirs might legitimately have earned the quartet a few new listeners. Nominations for June 6′s CMT Music Awards were announced this morning, with Carrie Underwood leading the pack with five nods, followed by Miranda Lambert, who received four.

If there’s one category we feel strongly about, it’s CMT Performance of the Year, which honors the best live performance that aired on a CMT show, series, or special. TV Jukebox: 'The Secret Circle,' 'The Voice,' 'Switched at Birth,' and more music-on-TV moments

The teens were out in full force this week, music-on-TV fans! From first times to first loves — even first scooters — there were notable songs from The Secret Circle, Switched at Birth, Surburgatory, The Vampire Diaries, and Pretty Little Liars. Meanwhile, there was beauty in tragedy on One Tree Hill, The Voice makes it first appearance with a knock-out performance, suspicion ruled on Grey’s Anatomy and Grimm (though only one of the above involved fire dancing I’m sorry to report), a serial killer got his groove on in BBC America’s Being Human, and the gang from Happy Endings got gangsta with it on Penny’s birthday. Lady Antebellum selects tornado-torn Indiana school for its 'Own the Prom Night' concert
Here’s a feel-good story: Three weeks ago, country supergroup Lady Antebellum launched its “Own the Prom Night” contest in which a winning high school would land the trio as performers at its formal this spring. Fans sent in videos explaining why their school deserved to own the night with Lady A, but after hearing the story of Henryville High School in Henryville, IN — which was ravaged by a tornado earlier this month — schools across the country began to submit videos on Henryville High’s behalf instead. The winning submission came from neighboring Silver Creek High School. Watch it below. (And yes, that one kind-hearted kid kinda reminds us of Friday Night Lights‘ Landry, too.)
Unfortunately, Lady Antebellum can’t make Henryville’s scheduled prom next month because of a previous commitment. Instead, the group will throw a bigger event on May 16 in nearby Louisville, KY for the school’s juniors and seniors followed by a benefit for the community. Watch Lady A’s announcement below. Album sales: Bruce Springsteen's 'Wrecking Ball' finally knocks Adele's '21' out of the top spot

The Boss scored his tenth No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 this week with his latest album, Wrecking Ball, selling an impressive 196,000 copies.
In doing so, Springsteen matched Elvis’ record of ten number ones, making them the only two male solo rock artists to ever achieve the feat. (Jay-Z, meanwhile, has had twelve No. 1 debuts, including collaboration albums.)
Chart queen Adele just barely missed the top spot for a 24th week. Her album 21 had to settle for a second-place finish, selling 195,000 and blazing past the 8 million mark in total sales. 21 is the first album to sell 8 million copies since Usher’s Confessions passed that plateau in January 2005.
Lady Antebellum’s Own the Night (+437 percent), Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto (+567 percent), Drake’s Take Care (+97 percent), Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV (+173 percent), and Now 41 (+235 percent) all received major boosts thanks to special one-day 25 cent sales on Google Play last week, which were matched by AmazonMP3.
According to Billboard, none of these titles are affected by the rule change that went into effect in November after Lady Gaga’s Born This Way was sold for 99 cents in its first week. The magazine says that “only albums priced below $3.49 during their first four weeks of release will not be eligible for inclusion on the Billboard album charts,” and these have all been out for at least five frames.
Country star Luke Bryan’s annual springtime EP, Spring Break 4: Suntan City, sold 30,000 copies. His most recent album Tailgates and Tanlines, which debuted in August, sits at No. 18 and has sold 831,000 copies so far. In tenth, Andrew Bird’s Break It Yourself also moved 30,000 copies, his best sales week ever.

Album Sales: Adele tops the chart for a 21st week; Bruno Mars, The Civil Wars get big Grammy bumps

In the first full sales week since the Grammys, Adele’s 21, which won six awards including the Album of the Year prize, topped the Billboard 200 in a big way.
The British diva, whose middle finger made headlines last night at the Brit Awards, sold an astounding 730,000 copies (a 207% increase) of her blockbuster album, bringing its total to over 7.3 million in the States. According to iTunes, it also became the first album to ever sell over 2 million digital copies. Remarkably, 21 achieved these feats in its 52nd(!) week of release.
That’s right, the critically beloved disc has been available to consumers for a full year now, and it has maintained exemplary sales levels during each and every frame. Altogether, 21 has topped the chart for 21 weeks — the same amount of time as MC Hammer’s 1990 disc Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em, and the longest tally for any solo female artist ever.
Only seven albums have ever spent more time at number one:

Adele’s debut album 19 also got a substantial boost after her Grammy sweep, with sales rising a whopping 144 percent to 87,000 — enough to put it in fourth place. Don’t be surprised if both 21 and 19 end up outselling many high-profile new releases in 2012. Adele’s success and enduring appeal are, quite simply, phenomenal.
Whitney Houston’s Whitney: The Greatest Hits rose into second place in the wake of the star’s death. The late singer’s collection sold 175,000 copies, up 174 percent from the previous week. Houston’s most iconic track, “I Will Always Love You,” which currently sits at no. 7 on the Hot 100, will likely see high placement on tomorrow’s singles chart as well. READ FULL STORY »

About an hour after the Grammys were over, it was still unclear whether Adele was going to come backstage and talk to reporters, but suddenly the unmistakable a cappella strains of “Rolling in the Deep” came floating down the hall outside the press room and the woman of the hour appeared.
When asked how being silenced by throat surgery affected her this year, Adele was open and honest. “It’s been really, really peaceful. I’ve never been happier. I found great happiness when I was ill.” And as for that ex-boyfriend? “I think he’d be very happy for me.” Winning all six categories she was nominated in, Adele was humble but not modest. “I’m very, very proud of myself. Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, Taylor Swift lead this year's Academy of Country Music Awards nominees

It’s probably too early in the day for tequila, but Kenny Chesney has some celebrating to do.
The nominees for the 47th annual Academy of Country Music Awards were announced this morning, and the “You and Tequila” singer safely leads the pack with an impressive total of nine nominations, including the major categories of Entertainer, Male Vocalist, Album, Single, and Song of the Year.
Not far behind is Jason Aldean and his respectable six nods, while Lady Antebellum, Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert, and Toby Keith also nabbed multiple slots on this year’s ballot.
While Chesney is no stranger to these shindigs (the twangy beach bum has won Entertainer of the Year four times before), the singer’s been mostly dormant in recent years. But thanks to his huge crossover hit (which got an assist from the equally durable Grace Potter), the 43-year-old artist is enjoying a late-career surge.
The show will be hosted by Blake Shelton and Reba McIntyre, and CBS will air it live from Las Vegas’ MGM Grand on April 1.

Obama's wish-list of celebrity endorsements leaks, but Lady Antebellum says no thanks

With all the election talk about debates, rallies, caucuses, and surprise late-night candidates constantly permeating the news, it can be easy to forget that President Obama has an election — or rather, re-relection — campaign to run as well.
And where does Mr. Obama start? Being the hip president that he is, with the celebrities, of course! (Alright, to be fair, the list has a lot of political figures on it, too, but there sure are a lot of tabloid regulars.)
The Tennesseean has obtained a list of 194 public figures — potential presidential surrogates — that was reportedly distributed last month by the Obama campaign to a group of campaign donors in Washington as a “wish-list” of endorsers.
The collection, Dated Dec. 5, includes expected names like Oprah, Chelsea Clinton, and will.i.am, who, along with his bandmate Fergie, is one of the many musicians listed. But there are a few unexpected names there as well, such as country acts The Band Perry and Lady Antebellum, both of whom have already claimed that they will not be making any political endorsements.
“The members of Lady Antebellum did not submit their name for inclusion on the surrogate list for Obama’s campaign,” the band’s publicist Mary Hilliard Harrington said in a statement, adding, “The band has never commented on their political affiliations nor do they plan to in the future.” Probably a smart move considering all the ruckus an endorsement can cause — just ask Kelly Clarkson.
Only time will tell whether acts like Wilco, the Counting Crows, the Jonas Brothers (someone was trying to get a little cred with Sasha and Malia!), Jay-Z, Josh Groban, and Ricky Martin will actually take Obama up on this offer, so for now, just enjoy perusing this rare inside-look at the lineup of musicians that the Obama camp is hoping to court: READ FULL STORY »
