Obama's wish-list of celebrity endorsements leaks, but Lady Antebellum says no thanks

With all the election talk about debates, rallies, caucuses, and surprise late-night candidates constantly permeating the news, it can be easy to forget that President Obama has an election — or rather, re-relection — campaign to run as well.

And where does Mr. Obama start? Being the hip president that he is, with the celebrities, of course! (Alright, to be fair, the list has a lot of political figures on it, too, but there sure are a lot of tabloid regulars.)

The Tennesseean has obtained a list of 194 public figures — potential presidential surrogates — that was reportedly distributed last month by the Obama campaign to a group of campaign donors in Washington as a “wish-list” of endorsers.

The collection, Dated Dec. 5, includes expected names like Oprah, Chelsea Clinton, and will.i.am, who, along with his bandmate Fergie, is one of the many musicians listed. But there are a few unexpected names there as well, such as country acts The Band Perry and Lady Antebellum, both of whom have already claimed that they will not be making any political endorsements.

“The members of Lady Antebellum did not submit their name for inclusion on the surrogate list for Obama’s campaign,” the band’s publicist Mary Hilliard Harrington said in a statement, adding, “The band has never commented on their political affiliations nor do they plan to in the future.” Probably a smart move considering all the ruckus an endorsement can cause — just ask Kelly Clarkson.

Only time will tell whether acts like Wilco, the Counting Crows, the Jonas Brothers (someone was trying to get a little cred with Sasha and Malia!), Jay-Z, Josh Groban, and Ricky Martin will actually take Obama up on this offer, so for now, just enjoy perusing this rare inside-look at the lineup of musicians that the Obama camp is  hoping to court: READ FULL STORY »

Album Sales: Michael Buble tops the chart (again), and Adele logs her best sales week yet

Michael-Buble

Michael Bublé’s Christmas has only been in stores for nine weeks, but it’s had no trouble becoming the 2nd highest-selling album of 2011, behind Adele’s 21.

This week, Bublé topped the Billboard 200 for a fifth straight week, selling 467,000 copies and lifting his holiday collection’s total to a very merry 2.43 million (all five of Michael Bublé’s albums have topped the 2 million mark). Expect a hefty drop next week, though, now that Christmas Day has passed.

In second place, Adele’s 21 notched its best-ever sales week (in its 45th week of release!), moving 399,000 units. The album’s previous best week came with its debut in February, when 21 sold 352,000. This year, 21 has sold an astonishing 5.68 million Stateside, and on top of reclaiming the No. 1 spot next week, the album should pass the 6 million mark early in the new year. READ FULL STORY »

'CMT Artists of the Year' special set list: No Hank Williams Jr., but here's what you will see

By now, country fans have heard that earlier this week, Hank Williams Jr. left the stage while taping a duet with Jason Aldean for the CMT Artists of the Year special because, as Williams said in a statement to Country Weekly, ”I’ve heard people mess up my songs and screw up Daddy’s songs. I was here to honor Jason, a kid I really like. When I walked out there, it didn’t feel right, it didn’t sound right. I didn’t want to disrespect him.” CMT confirms Aldean then performed a version of his hit “Tattoos on This Town” solo, which is what viewers will see when the special honoring Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Lady Antebellum, Brad Paisley, and Taylor Swift premieres Dec. 13. The final set list:

Jason Aldean: “Tattoos on This Town”
The All-American Rejects (honoring Taylor Swift): “Mean”/”Gives You Hell” medley
Lady Antebellum: “Dancin’ Away With My Heart”
Gavin DeGraw (honoring Kenny Chesney): “Somewhere With You”
Brad Paisley with Joe Walsh: “Life’s Been Good To Me”/”Camouflage” medley
The Avett Brothers: “Laundry Room”

CMA Awards: Best and worst of the broadcast

The real winners were announced last night at the 45th Annual Country Music Association Awards. But here are a few more honors from the telecast that you should feel free to weigh in on:

Best Hosts: Obviously, Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley are the only people eligible for this honor, but haven’t they become quite a dynamic duo? I can’t think of any pair I’d rather see overseeing an awards show. They’re funny and saucy without being mean, and they keep the show moving.

Between the Hank Williams Jr. parody and the Faith Hill/Tim McGraw anatomy check that opened the show, Underwood and Paisley had me literally tearing up with laughter. And just when you think they can’t endear you to themselves any more, they deliver a powerhouse vocal on “Remind Me.” Hey, Oscars, are you watching?

Best performance: Near the end of the show, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, and Vince Gill performed a touching medley of tunes in honor of country icon Glen Campbell, who was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The seasoned veteran, clearly moved by the kind gesture, watched proudly from his seat, even giving the trio a thumbs-up when Paisley began to sing “Galveston.” It was the night’s sweetest moment: READ FULL STORY »

Coldplay earns third straight number one album on Billboard 200; Kelly Clarkson's 'Stronger' fares less well

cold-play

Although Coldplay’s latest album, Mylo Xyolto, hasn’t been as warmly received as the band’s previous efforts, it still topped the Billboard 200 chart with ease this week.

In its first seven days, Mylo Xyolto sold 447,000 copies, marking the third-best debut of the year behind Lady Gaga’s Born This Way (1.1 million) and Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV (964,000), as well as the band’s third straight number one album.

Coldplay’s last effort, 2008′s Viva La Vida Or Death and All His Friends, shifted 721,000 copies in its first week, but that album had a number one smash single in “Viva La Vida.” Mylo Xyolto‘s lead single “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” only peaked at number 14, though the British rocker’s new single “Paradise” has quickly climbed to number 15.

Kelly Clarkson’s fifth album Stronger had a slightly weaker debut than her last effort, starting in second place with 163,000. Clarkson’s 2009 effort All I Ever Wanted debuted with 255,000 copies, but once again, that album had a higher charting lead single in “My Life Would Suck Without You” (No. 1) than current single “Mr. Know It All” (No. 18 so far).

Crooner Michael Bublé eased into third place with 141,000 scans of his new holiday compilation Christmas. Given Bublé’s gigantic appeal around the holiday season, (I’ve given my mom three of his albums on three separate Christmases… and okay, I miiight listen to them too) the set should be a powerhouse seller over the next two months.

Adele held strong in fourth, moving 107,000 units of 21 in its 36th week on the chart, and she was followed by two more new releases. In fifth, Toby Keith’s Clancy’s Tavern sold 69,000 copies. That result gave the outspoken star his 10th number one album on the country chart. Rocker Tom Waits was close behind in sixth place, moving 63,000 of his new disc, Bad As Me.

Scotty McCreery, Lady Antebellum, Tony Bennett, and Casting Crowns rounded out the top ten. Their respective albums have now sold 384,000, 718,000, 465,000, and 129,000 total units. Find the full list here: READ FULL STORY »

Adele returns to the top of the Billboard 200, passes 4 million sales total; Casting Crowns scores top debut

After 35 weeks on the chart, Adele’s smash album 21, which has yet to leave the Top 5, rose back into the number one spot on the Billboard 200 this week, selling an additional 106,000 copies.

That number pushed 21‘s total to a whopping 4.1 million copies, by far the biggest selling album of 2011. All told, the “Someone Like You” singer has spent 13 non-consecutive weeks atop the chart this year. Now, if she could just fix those dang vocal cords!

Christian band Casting Crowns finished close behind in second place with first-week sales of their album Come to the Well at 99,000 copies. The band’s last album, 2009′s Until the Whole World Hears, got off to a stronger start with 167,000 copies sold, but to be fair, that disc still holds the record for the highest Christian-album debut in history. Come to the Well‘s 99,000 debut is nothing to cast a stone (or crown, for that matter) at.

In third place, Scotty McCreery continues to impress as his album Clear As Day dipped just 36 percent to 57,000. That gives the country balladeer three-week sales of 342,000. His runner-up, Lauren Alaina fell down to tenth place, dropping 63 percent in her second week to 26,000. Her record, Wildflower, has now sold 95,000 copies, which isn’t incredible, but it’s not half bad considering Alaina’s lead single, “Like My Mother Does,” only peaked at number 36 on the country chart. (Not all American Idol alums are as fortunate as these two…)

Last week’s chart-topper Evanescence falls back into fourth, as their self-titled third album fell 69 percent to 40,000. It has sold 167,000 after two weeks. Meanwhile ,Tony Bennett’s Duets II rises one spot into fifth place with another 39,000 copies sold. The 85 year-old crooner’s set has moved 434,000 copies in five weeks, and sales should remain strong through the holidays.

R&B singer Joe fared alright in his debut: His latest album, The Good, the Bad, and the Sexy sold 33,000 copies, good enough for eighth place. His 2009 set Alright started at number 7 with 49,000. Check out the top ten below: READ FULL STORY »

Evanescence tops the Billboard 200 after five-year hiatus; Lauren Alaina debuts in fifth place

Evanescence

Despite a five-year break from the music scene and some major personnel changes, goth rockers Evanescence returned to the top of the Billboard 200 chart today with their self-titled third album, which sold 127,000 copies in its first week.

Though that number is far less than Evanescence’s last album, The Open Door, which debuted at No. 1 in 2006 with 447,000 copies sold, it is impressive that the Amy Lee-led band managed to move that many discs without a smash single like “My Immortal” or “Bring Me To Life.” Their current single, “What You Want” sits at number 13 on the Rock Songs chart.

Another rock band enjoyed a strong debut this week: L.A.’s Five Finger Death Punch started off at No. 3 (behind the indomitable Adele, whose 21 is STILL holding strong at No. 2) with 91,000 copies of their album, American Capitalist, sold. That’s a big jump from their 2009 record, War Is the Answer, which debuted at No. 7 with 44,000.

Last week’s chart champ, Scotty McCreery’s Clear As Day, slipped down into fourth place after a 55 percent drop to 88,000, giving him a two-week total of 285,000. Meanwhile, his runner-up, Lauren Alaina, got off to a pretty good start herself with 69,000 copies of her disc Wildflower sold in its debut week.

Ryan Adams’ Ashes and Fire and Martina McBride’s Eleven debuted with 49,000 and 40,000, respectively. Joe Jonas wasn’t as lucky. Without his brothers beside him, the “Just In Love” singer started at No. 15 with only 18,000 copies. Check out the top ten below: READ FULL STORY »

Fall Music Preview: Eight Things You Might Not Know About Lady Antebellum

Josh Kelley, Hillary Scott, and Dave Haywood

For Entertainment Weekly‘s Fall Music Preview, we met up with Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley, and Dave Haywood of Lady Antebellum at their hometown bar, the Patterson House in Nashville, to talk about their new album Own the Night.

Over a few rounds of bacon-infused whiskey, we discussed the up-’til-dawn celebrating that inspired the title, and learned what happened at the wild afterparty following Lady A’s Grammys sweep in February. (Hint: Deirks Bentley knows how to get down.)

Of course, if you’re one of the rare few who didn’t watch the Grammys and has never sung a tipsy karaoke version of “Need You Now,” you’ll need a quick trivia primer on Lady Antebellum before you read the interview. Below, we’ve listed a few things to help you get to know the band a little better.

1. When the band first started, Scott needed a fake ID to play in bars. “I was 20 and it was always an issue on the road, like, ‘I don’t know if Hillary’s gonna be able to get in!’” she admits. “So one of Charles and Dave’s friends had a spare ID, and I used it to get in. I got caught once, though, in Athens, Georgia. Don’t do this, kids!” READ FULL STORY »

'CMA Music Festival' did actually rock, plus Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina remain adorable

Alaina-McBride

ABC touted its three-hour CMA Music Festival concert as “Country’s Night to Rock,” and because this special had better sound than other televised music award shows do combined, it actually did. Most everyone was there, from Reba McEntire, who sang “Turn On the Radio”; to Taylor Swift, who worked a sparkly gold fringed dress for “Sparks Fly”; to Jason Aldean, who brought Kelly Clarkson onstage for their duet “Don’t You Wanna Stay.” My favorite crowd reaction shot of the night was the guy rapping along with Aldean during “Dirt Road Anthem.” My favorite artist interview was Lady Antebellum, who revealed they sign a lot of “stinky cowboy boots” and that Dave Haywood sleeps in black crew socks. (“This interview is really awful for my rep, by the way,” he joked.)

It was admittedly tough to watch Sugarland’s performance in light of their stage collapse in Indiana over the weekend. ABC made sure viewers knew the performances of “Find the Beat Again” and “Stuck Like Glue” were recorded on June 10, 2011, but being reminded of how much joy that duo and their fans are capable of made your heart ache because you know they’re feeling the complete opposite now.
