Lady Gaga got so into Jo Calderone that she wore a fake penis at the VMAs

Though her performance may have been confusing and long-winded (not to mention not entirely original), you have to give Lady Gaga credit for her show-length turn as alter-ego Jo Calderone during Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards. As many people pointed out, it was probably the longest she has ever kept the same outfit on, and she managed to keep up the attitude throughout the show (though her Karate Kid accent was sort of all over the place). The whole thing even earned the approval of LGBT advocates.

Most of all, she definitely inhabited the male-ness of her persona. In fact, according to a scoop from the fine folks at Us, she was so method that she actually wore a prosthetic penis underneath her pants. She did do an awful lot of crotch grabbing over the course of the show, and apparently she actually had something to hold onto (though to be fair, her hand drifts towards her groin even when she’s in lady mode).

Gaga has always played around with gender, and this is hardly the first time she has been thought to have something swinging between her legs. Remember all those rumors about her being a hermaphrodite? And she famously donned some very visible strap-on junk for a photo shoot for Q magazine in Britain. So while the two-and-a-half hour shape-shift into Jo Calderone was new and bold, it wasn’t the first time she has packed a little extra heat.

Does the prosthetic penis change the way you thought about the Jo Calderone character? And, more importantly, what’s next for Lady Gaga? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Lady Gaga's night as Jo Calderone: Was it too much?

When the curtains parted on the giant Flight of the Navigator Laser Vagina on last night’s MTV Video Music Awards, the first thing anybody saw was a figure in a plain white T-shirt frantically smoking a cigarette.

The crowd immediately recognized it as Lady Gaga’s somewhat Italian alter-ego Jo Calderone. Everyone cheered, and why wouldn’t they? Lady Gaga has made a career out of being surprising and unpredictable, and though all Calderone seemed to want to do was recite lines from what appeared to be a one-(wo)man theater show s/he was workshopping, everybody wanted to know what would happen next.

And then it just kept going.

By the time her monologue entered the fourth minute, she had lost the crowd inside the venue, though she won everybody right back with her stout performance of “Yoü and I” (featuring a thrilling cameo on guitar care of Brian May).

But Calderone’s presence didn’t end there. In fact, there were two other segments dedicated to the character: Gaga’s win for (ironically) Best Female Video and the tribute to Britney Spears. What did we learn? A little Jo Calderone goes a long way. READ FULL STORY »

MTV 2011 VMAs: What you didn't see on TV

The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards are in the books, and while the show as a whole felt a little scattered and unfocused, there were indeed some high points. Russell Brand, Tony Bennett, and Bruno Mars gave Amy Winehouse an excellent tribute, Beyoncé capped off a great performance with a nice little revelation about the future of her family, and Adele tore down the house with her stunning, jaw-dropping run through “Someone Like You.”

But there were a handful of amazing moments that happened between MTV’s rapid-fire camera cuts and commercial breaks. Luckily, I was inside the Nokia Theater at L.A. Live and can report the eight greatest things you probably missed during the show. READ FULL STORY »

MTV 2011 VMAs: Beyonce's baby bump, the moving Amy Winehouse tribute, and other memorable moments

The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards were an undeniably strange production. Lady Gaga performed an entire song as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone…and then stayed in character for the entire show. (One EW commenter on our live-blog noted that this was probably the longest time Gaga has ever spent in one outfit.) Comedian Kevin Hart opened with a curiously extended monologue expressing his disappointment that he wasn’t hosting the show, but his frequent appearances thereafter made it seem like he actually was the host. Also, Cloris Leachman was onstage with the Jersey Shore girls, thus opening up a rift in the space/time continuum.

But even without an instantly buzzworthy Kanye-Taylor event, the 28th-annual VMAs had a few high points, too. If you had to pick one defining moment, it would have to be Beyoncé’s baby bump. READ FULL STORY »

MTV 2011 VMAs: Lady Gaga explains alter ego Jo Calderone as a New Jersey Italian who's 'not a f--ing guido!'

What was the deal with Lady Gaga appearing as her alter ego Joe Calderone at the 2011 VMAs? It’s a little unclear, but one thing is for certain: The pop queen was infinitely dedicated to the act, as became apparent when she appeared in the VMA press room and would only answer questions as Calderone, despite being introduced by handlers as Lady Gaga.

“I don’t understand the question,” Gaga/Calderone said after a journalist asked how one persona inspires or affects the other.

And how did it end up that Joe showed up at the VMAs instead of Gaga? Explained Gaga/Calderone: “She’s just really f—ing pissed at me right now and she said, ‘F— you. If you really love me, you’ll go instead of me, and you’ll get in that spotlight.’ So I did.”

Next question: Who is Joe and how long will he be with us? “I’m going to be here about five more minutes,” Gaga/Calderone said. “And I’m from Jersey. My family is from Palermo, Sicily, and I’m not a singer or a model or an actor or anything.”

Calderone is a guido, someone in the press crowd suggested. “No, I’m not a f—ing guido!” the enraged Gaga/Calderone said. “You don’t like Italians? What the f— is the matter with you? I’m just a guy, and I just wanted to show my girl how much I love her, that’s all.”

And lastly: Any chance that Calderone would get together with Britney, who he had just lavished on stage? “Maybe if she wants to,” Gaga/Calderone said. “She’s f—ing hot. I don’t know. You know, Gaga is my girl, but Britney is f—ing Britney Spears. Didn’t you jerk off to Britney when you were a kid?”

Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Adele all won multiple Moon Men at the MTV 2011 Video Music Awards. Perry’s “Firework” won for Video of the Year, and she also took home a trophy with Kanye West for Best Collaboration for their sci-fi fantasia “E.T.” Perry harkened back to a previous VMAs show in her acceptance speech when she told her co-winner, “Now this is the time when you want to interrupt me, Kanye!” Lady Gaga — who spent the entire night dressed as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone — won Best Female and Best Video with a Message. Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” meanwhile, took home multiple behind-the-scenes awards for editing, art direction, and cinematography.

Other winners included Britney Spears (who also took home the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award), Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Foo Fighters, and Tyler, The Creator. Check out a full list below:

MTV 2011 VMAs: Lady Gaga, in drag, cannot stop mugging through Britney Spears tribute

So, which is better (or worse)? Chris Gaines? Or Jo Calderone? Lady Gaga’s male alter ego took the MTV VMA stage a second time to present the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award to Britney Spears, and for a man who opened the show complaining about the constant spotlight on Lady Gaga, he seemingly could not stop hogging it for himself.

After lauding Spears as “a pop music legend” who inspired him when he was a starving artist, Calderone offered this anecdote/over-share: “I used to hang posters of her on the wall and touch myself when I was in bed.” (Spears, for her part, found that hilarious.) Calderone then cued a well-choreographed-if-still-mildly-horrifying tribute performance by a gaggle of tween girls in Britney drag dancing to some of her biggest hits.

Finally, Brit Brit took to the stage, and alllllmost shared a lip-lock with Calderone. Instead, she giggled, and said, “I’ve done that already,” referring to her famous kiss with Madonna in 2003. But Jo would not be denied, grabbing the mic, and saying, “We’re just a good old fashioned American man and a good old fashioned American girl.” Well, okay! Then they both pivoted to introducing Beyonce’s very buzz-y performance of “Love on Top.” At least the two appeared to laugh about the whole hullabaloo afterwards.

MTV 2011 VMAs: Lady Gaga? She's a man, baby! -- VIDEO

Lady Gaga opened the MTV 2011 Video Music Awards as her male alter ego Jo Calderone, in a simple white t-shirt and over-sized dark blue pants — but not with a song. Instead, Jo indulged in an extended monologue/rant about his “girlfriend” Gaga. “She’s f—ing crazy!” said Gaga-as-Jo. “She comes out of the shower still drippin’, still got the heels on! At first it was sexy, but now I’m just confused.” So were many in the audience, including Britney Spears and Katy Perry, who took in Stefani Germanotta’s drag king performance with a mix of surprise and befuddlement.

“I think it’s really f—ing great that she’s still such a star,” Jo continued. “But how am I supposed to shine?… ’Cause when she gets on the stage, there’s no holding back.” Jo even complained that when Gaga reaches sexual climax, she covers her face. “Like she can’t stand to have one honest moment where nobody’s watching! I want her to be real. She says, ‘I’m not real, I’m theater.’”

Calderone then took to the piano and belted out a robust performance of Gaga’s “You and I,” complete with hard stepping back-up dancers and Brian May from Queen on guitar. Because why not?

MTV VMAs wildest moments: EW predicts what's coming this Sunday

Lady-Gaga-meat-dress

With the 2011 MTV VMAs just two days away, it got us thinking: Boy, some nutty things have happened over the years. Butts have been exposed, pop queens have kissed, and there have been just plain awkward moments.

The question now is what’s going to happen next: Maybe Lady Gaga will wear a live animal—who knows? So while we wait for the madness to ensue, let’s speculate! Below are some things that just might happen.

Award Theft

Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci” loses to Foster The People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” in the Best New Artist category. While the band accepts their award, ‘Shawn storms the stage (kind of like this guy) and steals the mic and the award, calling them and fellow nominees Tyler, The Creator, Wiz Khalifa, and Big Sean “basic b—-es.” Tyler, of course, is the only one who finds this funny.

Check out the rest after the jump.

Lady Gaga to open MTV VMAs: How will she top herself this time?

lady-gaga

Lady Gaga announced tonight that she will be opening the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre August 28.

Or rather her Little Monsters did. Appearing at MTV’s Times Square studio for the broadcast premiere of her “Yoü and I” video, a legion of sequined fans on the street below unfurled a banner with the over-punctuated missive “Gaga to Open VMAs!!”

Admittedly, this comes as a bit of an anti-climax. The news came after days of Stewart/Colbert-worthy pre-announcement announcements, including a series of VMAs promos prominently featuring a (literally) stripped-down Gaga, and the “Yoü and I” video itself, which was supposed to debut tonight but leaked Tuesday. And really, who’s more obvious a choice to open a gaudy MTV spectacle than the Queen of Dramatic Entrances herself?

Still, that last point yet again begs the question that may come to define her young career: how can she keep topping herself? Her star-making 2009 VMAs performance featured an unforgettably dead-eyed Ladyship crucified on a meat-hook after a bloody version of “Paparazzi.” Then last year she maintained the butcher-shop motif with her infamous “meat dress,” setting off a chain-reaction of food-related couture culminating in her Grammys entrance via giant egg.

Music Mixers, how do you think she’ll kick off the show? With Tony Bennett predicting this week that Gaga will be “as big as Elvis,” might a duet be in order? Could her male alter ego “Joe Calderone” make an appearance? Does anyone else hope that her post-video-premiere revelation that Creature from the Black Lagoon is her favorite horror movie could be a clue? (Okay, that’s just me.) And if you’re going to hype an announcement to this degree, shouldn’t it at least end up being of this magnitude?
