Mariah Carey, Weezer, and N.E.R.D. albums all hit stores today

mariah-carey-christmas-IIEven with a newborn on the way, Mariah Carey is pressing on.  Sixteen years after making one of the most popular holiday albums ever, Carey returns with a sequel to Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas II You, re-recording several tunes from the original and introducing a few more. Fresh off of Halloween, the record is timed perfectly. As we make plans for turkey day, we know Christmas bells will be ringing in no time.

Weezer also released a two-CD deluxe reissue of their 1996 second album, PinkertonRivers Cuomo once considered the album a “hugely painful mistake.” But now he and Weezer fans alike know it to be a classic. And we agree. N.E.R.D.‘s new album, Nothing, is out today as well. Title aside, know that this trippy album has plenty to offer. Check out the review we gave it here. Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, and Shae Haley’s new set delivers more cuts for rocking festivals and introspective cuts to reflect with.

Those are this week’s big releases. What records will you be buying this week? Let us know.

Rihanna ties Gaga, Beyonce, Mariah for no. 1 pop radio hits

rihanna-rain-dont-let-upImage Credit: RD/Erik Kabik/Retna ltdAs MTV reports today, Good Girl Gone Bad Rihanna has gone good enough to qualify for a pretty rarefied status: With Eminem duet “Love the Way You Lie,” the Barbadian songstress has now officially had six #1 songs on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart.

Other artists with a Radio Divas Sixer membership in their wallet alongside the black AmEx and Sam’s Club card include Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga, and Beyonce. (The latter two actually achieved it together with their “Telephone” collab earlier this year, though technicalities aside, Mimi is far and away the winner, having earned six no. 1 songs on the Hot 100 before the creation of the Pop Songs chart in 1993, and six after.)

Members of the next-tier-down posse include Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, and Pink, all with five no. 1′s.

What do you think, Mixers—should Mariah just own this radio rodeo, fair and square? Has Rihanna earned her spot in the club? And who, if anyone, will be next?

Mariah Carey: 'Angels Advocate' remix album cancelled

Mariah-CareyImage Credit: Bill Davila/startraksphoto.comMariah Carey’s label tells the Music Mix that the rumors are true: Angels Advocate, the remix set that the diva was planning to drop next Tuesday, will no longer be released as an album. Multiple singles (“Up Out My Face” featuring Nicki Minaj, “Angels Cry” featuring Ne-Yo) have already surfaced from the project, which was to have paired Carey with new collaborators on reworked tunes from last fall’s Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. Now Island Def Jam’s plan is to continue putting out that new material as stand-alone singles instead of packaging it together into a full-length CD as originally intended. “We’ve released a few of Mariah’s hot remixes from Memoirs on iTunes and Mariah’s back in the studio working on some new surprises,” says a label rep. Angels Advocate was previously delayed to this month from a late February release date.

New Mariah Carey video, 'Up Out My Face': Finally! Mimi is emancipated by hot new video

Sometimes, Mariah gets it wrong (“H.A.T.E. U”? H.A.T.E.D. those freakin swimsuits. “I Want to Know What Love Is”? I want to know why you’re in a baseball stadium full of sad people).

And then—she gets it so right.  In the new video for “Up Out My Face” from her upcoming duets remix album Angels Advocate, due March 30, there are so very many things to love: the color scheme (Target ad? White Stripes tribute?); the nonsensical (but sexical!) nurses’ outfits and Barbie boxes; rising Lil Wayne protege Nicki Minaj getting red, white, and saucypants all over; Nick Cannon (he also directs the clip) reprising his Drumline stomp in the outro. They wear silly outfits, they make silly faces; they have fun:

Wasn’t that delicious? Do you not want to put Minaj in your pocket? Are you fonder of Nick Cannon than you were five and half minutes ago? (He also directed his wife in another new video, the less-than-scintillating Ne-Yo collaboration “Angels Cry,” but we are letting that one slide; it is a forgiveness kind of day). Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Mariah Carey's 'I Want to Know What Love Is' video: Play ball!

Generally, the only time I use the words “sports” and “Mariah Carey” in the same sentence is when I’m asking someone to turn down the former so I can listen to the latter. But Mimi’s new video for her cover of Foreigner’s I Want to Know What Love Is (the second vid off her new album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel) brings the two together with interesting—if not exactly harmonious—results.

The CG-heavy clip takes place in an anonymous baseball diamond, where a particularly lanky-looking Mariah sings into an old-school mic atop a giant butterfly emblem in the field. (Did someone decide the pitcher’s mound would be too butch?) This is intercut with shots of couples—lovers, families, friends—admiring her with reverent, slo-mo gazes. Then more Mariah, then an out-of-nowhere gospel choir (Why ask why?), a couple high notes, and…. fade out.

Huh. I was kind of hoping MC would work the baseball angle a little more, but I guess fielding a fly ball might put her nails in danger. And those thigh-high boots aren’t made for walking, let alone running the bases. Oh well. Check out the video below and let us know what you think: Home run? Foul ball? Foot fault? No, wait. That’s tennis, right?

Barbra Streisand tops the albums chart in a busy week; Paramore bests Mariah Carey

Barbra Streisand fans are certainly a devoted bunch. Today they’ve put Babs atop the Billboard 200 with a healthy 180,000 copies sold of her jazz standards album Love Is the Answer, according to Nielsen SoundScan, beating a host of new releases by buzzier artists. By way of comparison, that’s equivalent to every one of the die-hard fans who attended Barbra’s recent gig at NYC’s Village Vanguard club going out and buying 1,800 copies of her new record. Not bad at all.

This week’s list of distinguished also-rans begins with Paramore, whose pop-punk star will no doubt continue to rise now that they’ve taken No. 2 on the chart by selling 175,000 copies of their acclaimed brand new eyes. At No. 3, it’s Mariah Carey, with 168,000 copies sold of Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. That result might be the most noteworthy thing on this chart, actually — 168K is a nice number, to be sure, but I wonder how Mariah must feel about coming in third place to Paramore and Barbra.

Mariah Carey's 'I Want to Know What Love Is' debuts: Hear it here

Mariah Carey’s new album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel may have been pushed back to Sept. 29, but at least we have her cover of Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is” to see us through the delay. Take a listen, below, and tell us what you think.

“I Want to Know What Love Is” is the second single to be released in advance of Memoirs; the first one, “Obsessed,” has performed well, reaching as high as No. 11 on Billboard‘s Hot 100, but has yet to become a truly ubiquitous smash on the order of “We Belong Together” or “Touch My Body.” Can this one do better? I’m thinking it just might have a shot. Nostalgia for the cheesetastic ’80s is a powerful thing, as the success of the Glee kids’ “Don’t Stop Believin’” this spring should remind us. And an old-fashioned power ballad might be just the thing Mariah’s fans have been waiting for — at least, the fans who remember the days when she was best known for songs like this. If nothing else, I can’t imagine “I Want to Know What Love Is” not dominating adult-contemporary radio.

But I could be wrong. Let us know: How do you like Mariah’s Foreigner cover? Do you think it will meet with more success than “Obsessed”?

UPDATE: Streams of Mariah Carey’s “I Want to Know What Love Is” cover are being taken down left and right, but the song is out there. For now, a new stream is below.

Whitney, Mariah, Madonna, or Barbra: Who's your favorite fall diva?

Fall-of-Diva_lPeruse the upcoming music release calendar and one theme crystallizes: This fall belongs to the diva.

Well, I suppose it remains to be seen if the fall will actually belong to bombastic songstresses — they’ve gotta make a splash with sales, appearances, airplay, and all that first. (And some diva-esque antics would probably help stir up some excitement, too. Just sayin’.) But the ladies pictured at the left here are surely making a play for dominance with four releases that have the potential to be huge.

First up, of course, is Whitney Houston’s comeback album, I Look to You, on Aug. 31. Then on Sept. 29, comes a trifecta of releases: Barbra Streisand’s Love is the Answer, Mariah Carey’s twice-delayed Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, and Madonna’s greatest-hits album Celebration. (Hilariously enough, The Hills‘ Heidi Montag drops her album the same day. But I’m not about to include her in the “diva” category.) The short of it is, it’s an exciting time to be a diva lover!

Still, I have mixed feelings about all the releases. I’ll give you a few words on my anticipation for each diva’s disc. Whitney: Excited, but nervous. Madonna: Sure, I’ll buy it all yet again. Duh. Barbra: Ehh, it’s Barbra, which is always so Barbra. Mariah: Love “Obsessed,” but the rest better be even better.

But let’s get real here — I’m going to buy them all. Again, duh! But what about all of you out there? Which of these four albums are you most excited about? If you only buy one, which will it be? Based on what you’ve heard so far, what are you loving most?
