Possible reveal of Lollapalooza lineup includes Phoenix and The Postal Service

Rumors are swirling that Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, Mumford & Sons, and The Killers just might be the chosen ones headlining Lollapalooza.

Two anonymous Twitter accounts have been slowly leaking names of artists who will be featured at this year’s Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago, and today the Chicago Tribune reported that the three-day event would feature the above bands as well as The National and The Postal Service.

The lineup hasn’t officially been announced yet, but The Killers are participating in Lollapalooza Brasil and according to their tour schedule, Phoenix will be geographically posed to pop in for a show in Chicago on those dates.

The other bands’ tour schedules show an opening during that weekend as well, so let’s say it’s safe to hope. Calls by EW to Lollapalooza organizers for confirmation were not immediately returned.

Early-bird tickets and special packages go on sale this week for the ninth Lolla festival at Grant Park. The festival runs August 2-4.

Mumford & Sons split four ways for 'Whispers in the Dark' video: Watch it here!

When people think of Mumford & Sons as a throwback act, they mean that they use instrumentation and an aesthetic that dates back to the roots of American folk, country, and bluegrass. But when it comes to music videos, they are similarly old-school, in the sense that they really seem to be trying to make the sort of clips one of the biggest-selling rock bands in the country is supposed to make.

For their last video, they went the auteur route and handed over the direction and acting reigns to Luther star Idris Elba. For their new video for “Whispers in the Dark,” director Jim Canty (who has also worked with Mika and Mark Ronson) split the screen into four quadrants and gave each band member his own on-his-way-to-the-show narrative. In essence, it forces you to watch the clip four times to truly follow everything (though really, you probably only have to watch it three times — in his story line, Marcus Mumford simply gets on a motorcycle and rides to the gig).

The future of rock & roll looks a whole lot like the past. It’s wearing vintage suspenders and playing the banjo. It’s singing high-lonesome harmonies and rediscovering Woody Guthrie. And it was all over the Grammys this month, as some of the year’s biggest bands took the stage with old-timey instruments and formal attire straight out of There Will Be Blood. Before taking Album of the Year, the night’s top prize, for their Americana-fueled barn burner Babel, British folk-rockers Mumford & Sons showed off their fingerpicking and their fedoras, stomping their weathered boots to their floorboard-rattling anthem “I Will Wait.” Denver indie band the Lumineers strummed their ubiquitous “Ho Hey,” while their bow-tie-clad drummer kept time with a tambourine. After picking up their Best Country Album prize, Atlanta bluegrass lovers Zac Brown Band joined Elton John, Mumford, and more for an all-star Levon Helm tribute, performing the Band’s 1968 classic “The Weight.” For one night, at least, Hollywood felt just about as down-home as the Midnight Ramble, Helm’s legendary Woodstock jam session.

Backstage after the show, sipping from a plastic cup, Marcus Mumford celebrated his win: “It’s f—ing awesome!” he shouted. But he wasn’t quite ready to declare a victory for folk rock just yet. “I think it’s always been around,” he told EW. “And you guys”—meaning Americans—”did a good job of inventing it. The media likes to focus on things at certain times, and that’s good for us. That means we get to play lots of shows.”

Mumford & Sons, Sande highlight Brit Awards winners

British music put on a brash, confident show at the Brit Awards on Wednesday, celebrating a resurgent industry whose bands and artists are topping charts around the globe.

Winners ranged from established acts such as Coldplay and Adele to world-conquering boy band One Direction, who won in the new Global Success category.

One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson called the prize “absolutely mind-blowing.”

American artists Frank Ocean and Lana Del Rey were among the non-British winners at a ceremony that embraced the mainstream while rewarding artists with distinctive personalities. READ FULL STORY »

Bonnaroo lineup announced: McCartney, Mumford, A$AP Rocky, R. Kelly, Bjork and more round out wildly diverse roster

This summer, the sons of London and Liverpool will descend upon Manchester — Tennessee, that is.

The annual rustic revel known as Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival has announced this year’s lineup, with Paul McCartney and Mumford & Sons topping the bill for the June event. Other topline guests on the docket include Bonnaroo veterans Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Icelandic export Björk.

Mumford & Sons, who this month snagged the Album of the Year prize at the Grammys, won’t be the only folk group packing their suspenders: The Lumineers, Of Monsters and Men, and Glen Hansard are also slated to play.

Of course, the full lineup for the four-day event, going down June 13-16 at its usual Tennessee stomping grounds, gets more diverse as you go down the list: Wilco, R. Kelly, the Wu-Tang Clan, A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar, David Byrne & St. Vincent, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Grizzly Bear,  Nas, Earl Sweatshirt, and ZZ Top are just some of the acts who’ll be heading to the farm.

Mumford and Sons announce dates, lineups for 'Stopover' mini-fests

Move over, Dave Matthews Band Caravan — there’s a new folk group with a traveling tour in town.

Though probably not your town. Mumford & Sons are adding new small-town dates to their Gentlemen of the Road tour, thus reviving their “Stopovers” scheme from last year. And this time, they’re bringing some new friends along for the ride.

The two-day Stopovers — planned in what Mumford & Sons says are “towns not normally frequented by touring bands in busses or splitter vans” — will feature a range of artists, from Vampire Weekend to the Vaccines.

“We deliberately look for towns that have something unique, or some vibe of which they are proud, explore them, and enjoy what they have to offer,” the band said in a statement.

Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Mumford & Sons added to Grammy lineup

Considering there are a total of 81 categories at the Grammy Awards and only a small fraction of those actually get handed out during the telecast, the main events of any given Grammy show are the performances. What other reason did anybody have to tune into last year’s show other than to watch Jennifer Hudson’s tribute to Whitney Houston and Nicki Minaj’s British-accented exorcism?

This year’s batch of performers is starting to build, and it begins with some massive acts. Rihanna, Taylor Swift, fun., Mumford & Sons, and the Black Keys have all been confirmed to perform live at the 55th Grammy Awards, which will take place at Los Angeles’ Staples Center on Sunday, Feb. 10.

Mumford, fun., and the Black Keys are among the most nominated artists at this year’s show (Mumford and fun. each have six, while the Black Keys have five plus one more Producer of the Year nod for Dan Auerbach). Rihanna and Taylor will walk into the building with three nominations each, though Swift likely would have collected more had her latest album Red come out in time for consideration (pencil her in for at least a half-dozen noms in 2014).

Now that we know some of the people who will definitely be performing, the speculation can begin about what those artists will perform and who they might invite along. READ FULL STORY »

Jon Stewart will host Bruce Springsteen tribute featuring Elton John, Mumford & Sons, Faith Hill, more

You know who’s great? Bruce Springsteen. You know who thinks so? Just about everybody — including MusiCares.

The charity, which helps out musicians with financial and medical assistance during times of need, has named the Boss their 2013 Person of the Year, and on Friday, February 8 (just two days before the Grammy Awards), Jon Stewart will host a tribute gala to Springsteen, his music, and his extensive charity work.

The lineup is an eclectic mix of Springsteen’s peers, collaborators, famous fans, and spiritual protégés, including Elton John, Mumford & Sons, Alabama Shakes, Faith Hill, John Legend, Eddie Vedder, Neil Young, Sting, Jim James, Mavis Staples, Jackson Browne, Emmylou Harris, Ben Harper, Tom Morello, Tim McGraw, Patti Smith, and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James. The event, which will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, is already sold out.

Springsteen is well deserving of the award, as he has committed himself to giving back to a number of worthy groups over the course of his long career. His most recent work came as part of outreach in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which badly battered the coastline of Springsteen’s home state of New Jersey.

Stewart, famously, is a longtime Springsteen fan and fellow New Jersey denizen; it’s not even the first time Stewart has formally paid tribute to Springsteen, as he spoke on Bruce’s behalf at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2009, and interviewed him for a lengthy Rolling Stone cover story last March. Grammy Nominations 2013: Your water cooler cheat sheet!

The Grammy nominations are in — and by now, we hope you’ve had time to do the following: Read the full list of major nominees, peruse Kyle Anderson’s take on the biggest snubs and surprises, and enjoy Scooter Braun’s Twitter tantrum.

But if all that’s not enough for you, we’ve cobbled together some interesting trends about this year’s crop of Grammy nominees — so even if you’re not a Grammys aficionado, you can pretend to be one around the office.

* The Best Album category this year is oddly rock-heavy With the notable exception of Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange, the Best Album category is dominated by rock acts. But whereas the category (until very recently) used to feature the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, and Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, it’s now honoring a newer crop of rockers.

Or, as one of my co-workers put it, “It’s like the Grammy voters have replaced their old fogies with young fogies.” The inclusion of The Black Keys’ El Camino and Jack White’s Blunderbuss feels especially odd, since both of those acts’ previous albums were substantially better than those efforts. (Though the White Stripes’ excellent 2004 release Elephant did get a nod that year.) Add in Mumford & Sons’s Babel and fun.’s Some Nights, and you’ve got a very dude-ish, very guitar-heavy category. Grammy nominations announced: Frank Ocean, fun., and the Black Keys dominate

Taylor Swift wasn’t the only one with surprise face at Wednesday night’s Grammy nomination concert.

A partial list of the nods for the 55th Annual Grammy Awards were revealed in a live televised concert event tonight, and it produced a fair share of bookie-flouting snubs and nods.

The show, which took place in Nashville under the watch of awkward-slash-charming cohosts Swift and LL Cool J, handed out a slew of golden-ticket invites to the February ceremony: First-timers Frank Ocean and fun. nabbed multiple (and fairly anticipated) nominations — including Best New Artist and Record of the Year — as did fellow rookies Gotye, Hunter Hayes, the Lumineers, Ed Sheeran, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Alabama Shakes.
