Nine-time Grammy winner Mary J. Blige will sing the national anthem before Game 1 of the World Series Wednesday night, the Associated Press reports.

Beyonce sings the national anthem live at Super Bowl press conference -- VIDEO

Are you a Beyliever now?

Over a week after the world learned that Beyoncé had lip-synched “The Star-Spangled Banner” at President Obama’s second inauguration, the diva finally admitted publicly this afternoon that she did, in fact, use a backing track during her performance. “I am a perfectionist,” she said, “and I did not have time to rehearse with the orchestra. It was a live television show, and a very very important emotional show for me…And due to the weather, due to the delay, due to no proper sound check, I did not feel comfortable taking a risk. It was about the president and the inauguration, and I wanted to make my country proud.”

The confession, however, came only after Beyoncé delivered a live, a cappella rendition of the national anthem to a convention center filled with reporters — proving that she can perform the song without any help from a pre-recorded track or even other musicians. Here’s video of her unaccompanied performance:

Phillip Phillips performs laid-back National Anthem at the World Series -- VIDEO

It’s been a busy day for American Idol winner Phillip Phillips.

Not only did the Georgia native earn a double platinum certification for his single “Home” and release his upcoming album‘s full tracklist, he took to the baseball diamond to perform the Star Spangled Banner at Game 1 of the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Detroit Tigers.

Phillips delivered a solid, laid-back version of the Anthem, complete with the trademark gravelly vocal style he maintained on Idol. Though he threw a few brooding notes into the arrangement, Phillips kept things straightforward, pretty, and nicely tuneful.

Kelly Clarkson pulls off national-anthem hat trick with slated Super Bowl appearance

Last year, she sang it at the NBA Finals. The year before that, she sang it at the World Series.

And this year, Kelly Clarkson will get to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl.

While it hasn’t been officially announced yet — and her publicist told EW that she is unable to confirm it yet — it’s been reported that the inaugural American Idol winner will be on “Star-Spangled Banner” duty at Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis on Feb. 5th. The broadcast will also feature Madonna, Nicki Minaj, and M.I.A. during the halftime show.

This will make Clarkson only the third Idol winner (after Jordin Sparks and Carrie Underwood) to belt the Francis Scott Key tune on Super Sunday, despite the fact that her widely praised vocal talents have always made her a natural candidate for the job.

Then again, Super Bowl organizers might be going the Idol route as a way of playing it safe this year, given Christina Aguilera’s much-criticized blunder last year.

What about you guys? Are you happy with the selection, or are there artists out there who you think deserve it more — or would simply be more interesting — than Clarkson?
