Fergie, Q-Tip drop 'Great Gatsby' song 'A Little Party Never Killed Nobody': Hear it here

F. Scott Fitzgerald and Fergie, together at last: the Black Eyed Peas member, aided by Q-Tip and GoonRock, contributed a song to the Jay-Z-produced soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming The Great Gatsby adaptation.

Of course, Luhrmann’s movies have a memorable musical history, full of quality original tracks like Radiohead’s “Exit Music (For a Film)” (written for Romeo + Juliet) and Moulin Rouge‘s chart-topping “Lady Marmalade” from Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Pink, and Missy Elliott.

But does the genre-hopping, Fergie-led “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)” stand up to its predecessors? We’re not so sure. It doesn’t help that Ferg’s titular sentiment doesn’t quite mesh with the message of, you know, The Great Gatsby, but perhaps the song is meant to foreshadow the downfall at novel’s end.

Or maybe not! Give the song a listen below and let us know what you think:

Chris Lighty, manager of stars like Mariah Carey, LL Cool J, and Diddy, has died at 44

Chris Lighty, the hip-hop impresario and manager of the likes of Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent, and Diddy, has died. He was 44 years old.

According to a report in the New York Daily News, Lighty took his own life in his Bronx apartment this morning following an argument with his ex-wife. Though details remain scarce, authorities do know that he and his wife divorced last year, and that he may have owed as much as $5 million to the IRS in unpaid taxes.

At the turn of the century, being managed by Lighty and his Violator Entertainment shingle was a prestigious get — some of the biggest names in the music industry came under his guidance, including Mariah Carey, Missy Elliott, LL Cool J, Nas, and Ja Rule.

He began his career under the tutelage of Lyor Cohen and Russell Simmons as Rush Management in the late ’80s, later setting up Violator as one of the early multi-pronged management companies. They produced two compilations (Violator: The Album, and Violator: The Album, V2.0), which featured the likes of Q-Tip (performing his breakout solo single “Vivrant Thing”), Fat Joe, Mobb Deep, Cam’Ron, Cee-Lo, and Mase.

There was rarely a rap star from that era who didn’t come in contact with Lighty, who was known as a fair and savvy navigator of the ever-tumultuous waters of the hip-hop world, and he will undoubtedly be missed.

Kanye West makes surprise cameo with Q-Tip at hip-hop festival in Brooklyn: Watch the video here

When New York rhymer Q-Tip and his A Tribe Called Quest dropped their classic hip-hop set Midnight Marauders in 1993, Kanye West–an avid fan of the trio–was 19.

So you can imagine the joy he felt last Saturday when his teen idol brought him, now a full-on star himself, up on stage as a surprise guest at the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival to perform Marauders‘ standout single “Award Tour.”

A Chicago native, West looked right at home on the outdoor NY stage. In his retro chic tank top and snapback cap, Kanye didn’t just rock with Tip, but also hopped off the stage and into the crowd to perform the title track from his last album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Check out the clips after the jump.

We already know that Jay-Z’s new website has plenty of confusing design elements and interviews with famous actresses, but today it also became a source for new music.

Santigold, who is signed to Jigga’s Roc Nation Management, dropped a new bomb called “GO” on the site today, and she invited friends: The track features contributions from two-thirds of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Karen O provides  backing vocals, and Nick Zinner lends his trademark guitar noise), and the song was co-produced by Q-Tip, Switch and Santi herself. Give it a spin here. READ FULL STORY »

Q-Tip talks 2011 plans: A multilingual new album, collaborating with Drake, and more

Q-tip-musicianImage Credit: Johnny Nunez/WireImage.comQ-Tip is making big plans for the coming year. The sometime A Tribe Called Quest rapper phoned the Music Mix earlier today to fill us in on all the projects he has on the way, including a new solo album recorded in English, Spanish, and French. He’s calling it The Last Zulu, and ideally he hopes to complete three separate versions of the set (one for each language).

“I feel like my fans have been so gracious over the years,” Q-Tip says. “They’re so smart that I want to extend the grace back to them and speak to them in their tongues.” One slight problem: The Abstract Poetic is fluent in neither French nor Spanish. “I’m going to have to brush up!”

He plans to start seriously focusing on The Last Zulu in February, with a tentative release target of late 2011/early 2012. Here’s hoping it doesn’t fall victim to the label shenanigans that delayed 2008′s The Renaissance for so long.

So far Q-Tip has a few rough ideas for songs and a general concept involving vintage rhythms. “It’s going to take us back to the days of when it was breakbeats, when [Grandmaster] Flash and [Afrika] Bambaataa was throwing on them hard beats. It’s going to have a lot of that energy, and it’s going to feel really big and anthemic. It’s going to be unlike anything I’ve done before.” READ FULL STORY »

Q-Tip wants to work with Eminem (plus Grammys talk and more)

Q-Tip has been logging studio hours lately making beats, not only for himself, but others. There’s one project in particular that the sometime Tribe Called Quest leader would like to work on as a producer: Eminem’s upcoming Relapse 2. “I submitted some tracks to Eminem,” he tells the Music Mix. “They’re very hard, very rhythmic. I’m just hoping that he likes them enough to use them.” Most know Q-Tip best as a rapper, of course, but given his strong beatmaking résumé — he produced Nas’s classic “One Love” and Mobb Deep’s “Give Up the Goods,” among others — it’s an intriguing idea.  (Says an Eminem rep: “They haven’t done anything together yet, but Em is still working.”)

After all the years of label drama it took to get The Renaissance on shelves, Q-Tip was happy to see his acclaimed 2008 album receive a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album last week. Still, he’s not losing any sleep thinking about his chances to win a trophy. “I’m not itching — if it happens, it would be nice, definitely,” he says. “But hey, man, I don’t pay too much attention to these things, because if you do, you wind up going crazy. I’m just honored to be recognized.”
