Who is the greatest guitarist of all time? Prepare to be unsurprised!

For decades, the question of who exactly is the greatest guitarist of all-time has occupied countless music fans — if not drummers, like myself, who are usually too exhausted from doing all the real work to debate such an inconsequential matter.

Regardless, Rolling Stone has just released a new list which ranks history’s top 100 fretmeisters and which was voted on by a veritable army of guitarists including Billy Corgan, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Lifeson, Ritchie Blackmore, Mick Mars, Robbie Robertson, Melissa Etheridge, and Kirk Hammett.

The list is packed with what can only be described as the usual, legendary, suspects. Jimi Hendrix tops the 100 and he is very much not the only featured musician currently jamming at the great gig in the sky.

Indeed, while such young-ish turks as Slash, Jack White, Derek Trucks, and Radiohead‘s Jonny Greeenwood are included, the entire top ten is made up of either the deceased or guitarists who, with the arguable exception of Jeff Beck, haven’t recorded anything of real note in a long time.

Take a look at the list yourself by clicking here and tell us what you think. Does the 100 merely reflect the electorate’s own often very “venerable” nature or is the golden age of the great, innovative, guitar hero now just a distant memory? And who is your pick for the best guitarist of all-time?

Our take on this year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees: Should the Beastie Boys, Guns 'N Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and others get in?

This year’s crop of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees have just been announced, and it’s the usual weird assortment of mega-band veterans and less-known innovators. So who will actually get inducted come April? I have no idea. But here’s my personal take on who I think deserves to get in. Disagree? Weigh in below!

BEASTIE BOYS
Should they get in?
Definitely. When Licensed To Ill came out in 1986, nobody could have predicted all that brat-rap bravado marked the launch of one of the next two decades’ major artists. But the album was a blockbuster (the first rap album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200), and the followup, Paul’s Boutique, remains one of hip-hop’s greatest achievements. They’ve been pumping out consistently innovative and entertaining albums ever since.

THE CURE
Should they get in? Yes. Dock points for the hair-spray-attack fashion crimes (is there a bad-hair Hall of Fame?), but this is one of the best bands of the past 30 years, from perky hits like “Close To Me” to moody masterpiece Disintegration.

DONOVAN
Should he get in?
Probably not. I like “Catch the Wind” and some other tunes just fine, but there’s a reason he’s never made the cut before: Donovan’s dippy sunshine folk just hasn’t aged well. READ FULL STORY »

Guns N' Roses, Joan Jett, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, and the Cure all nominated for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Guns-N-Roses

Yes, folks, it’s that time of the year again. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has released its nominations for the class of 2012 and the list is as follows: Guns N’ Roses, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, the Cure, Heart, Eric B. and Rakim, the Small Faces/Faces, Rufus with Chaka Khan, War, Laura Nyro, Donovan, Freddy King, and the Spinners. Those who receive enough votes will be inducted on April 14, 2012, at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.

As always with the list of nominees, several questions immediately spring to mind. Will this be the year for the Beasties and the Chili Peppers, both of whom have been nominated before (as have Nyro, War, and Donovan)? Has the Hall of Fame done enough — or too much — to highlight the creative contributions of hip-hop to “rock and roll”? And will the classic, ’80s-era lineup of Guns N’ Roses reunite to play, call each other names, or compare rehab facilities?

Send us your thoughts!

Red Hot Chili Peppers return with new single 'The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie': Hear it here

RHCP

The last time the Red Hot Chili Peppers released a debut single from a forthcoming album, Barack Obama was still a freshman senator, Rebecca Black was only nine years old, and the music world was irrationally obsessed with Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day.”

Today Obama is president, Black is a pop star, and people remember Susan Powter better than they remember Daniel. And in the middle of it all, the Red Hot Chili Peppers remain steadfast. Sure, they have a new guitarist (longtime collaborator Josh Klinghoffer, replacing the once-again-departed John Frusciante), but if their new single “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” (the first track from their end-of-summer album I’m With You) is any indication, things are still cool in Pepperland.

Give the new track a listen here:

No Doubt, the Strokes, Vampire Weekend handmake goodies for online Haiti-benefit auction

no-doubt-strokesImage Credit: Mark SquiresA host of actors and musicians—including Drew Barrymore, Daft Punk, Mark Ronson, Natalie Portman, No Doubt, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Grizzly Bear, the Strokes, Cat Power and Aziz Ansari—have signed on to contribute DIY artwork, clothing, signed instruments and more to Craft for a Cause, an online auction to benefit Haiti.

The internet-only event, which began at 8am this morning and continues through March 27, is spearheaded by Binki Shapiro, of sunny Strokes side project Little Joy. Top items on the bid site as of now include a hand-drawn t-shirt designed by Norah Jones, a Fender Squire II Stratocaster electric guitar signed and painted by Conor Oberst, and a hot-pink baby piano autographed by the members of Maroon 5.

Higher-ticket stuff, such as an original song by Mark Ronson, including all studio and production fees (minimum bid $1,000) and a pair of “1000% Kubrick Robots” signed and decorated by Daft Punk ($1,900), are made for bigger bank accounts, though many bits come in at kinder budgets ($30 starting price for Kings of Leon cover-art silk screens or a signed Amy Poehler caricature).

Find out more on CfaC’s official tumbler, and go ahead and get yourself a Jenny Lewis tote-bag poem or a Neil Gaiman fun pack for a good cause and a nice tax write-off.

Thom Yorke's new band, featuring...Flea?!

How’s this for a strange supergroup? Radiohead’s Thom Yorke just announced that he has formed a new band to back him on solo concert dates. The new fivesome includes longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, Beck/Elliott Smith drummer Joey Waronker, Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Mauro Refosco, and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea.

Wait, what?! Dour avant-rock lord Thom Yorke is in a band with fun-loving funkateer Flea? Apparently so.

I have no idea how these five guys will sound together, but they each bring formidable chops and diverse backgrounds to the table. This could be very cool. Here’s hoping for some high-quality YouTube footage of the new band’s Oct. 4 and 5 shows in Los Angeles. (“we don’t really have a name and the set will not be very long cuz ..well …we haven’t got that much material yet!” Yorke joked in the blog post announcing the band’s creation.)

Oh, and in case you’re feeling paranoid: “Radiohead is definitely not breaking up,” their publicist tells EW. This much is fairly obvious given the band’s recent burst of activity — but, hey, it’s nice to be reassured.

What kind of music do you think Thom Yorke and Flea will make together? Radiohead fans, are you as excited as I am to hear this band? Weigh in below.

This year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees include Kiss, LL Cool J, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Boy, is Kanye going to be mad!

ll-coolj-kiss-hall-of-fame_lThe list of possible inductees at next year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony has been announced and includes LL Cool J, the Chili Peppers, Kiss, ABBA, Genesis, the Stooges, and reggae icon Jimmy Cliff. Rounding out the list of a dozen music stars are the Hollies, Donna Summer, Darlene Love, the Chantels, and Laura Nyro. Five of the nominees will actually be inducted at the ceremony, which takes place on March 15 in New York.

At first glance that list seems to me a little on the weak side, though there is no doubting the influence of the Stooges and LL Cool J, nor the enduring popularity of the Chili Peppers and ABBA. It’s also good to see the Hall being un-snobbish about Kiss, a band that has always unashamedly been more interested in lunch box sales than critical plaudits. (I also feel that you can’t have too much fire-breathing at an awards ceremony.) There is also, of course, the possibility that an irritated-not-to-be-nominated Kanye West will ruin someone’s acceptance speech with a tirade (“Genesis, congratulations, but….”), even though he isn’t actually eligible yet for Hall of Fame-dom.

Are there any fans of Kiss, LL or the Chili Peppers that are desperate to see them granted HoF status? And what fave act of yours does the Hall continue to ignore?
