Jay-Z announces new album ... in a cell phone ad -- VIDEO

Jay-Z has taken branding to a whole new level, announcing his new album in a cell phone commercial.

Magna Carta Holy Grail, Jay’s first album since teaming up with Kanye West for Watch the Throne, arrives July 4, according to a three-minute Samsung spot that aired during Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Sunday night. As a tie-in to the album’s release, the first million Samsung Galaxy users to download a special mobile app will unlock the disc 72 hours early.

Check out the ad — featuring basically every relevant hip-hop producer there is (Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, Rick Rubin and Swizz Beatz) in the studio with Jay — below:

Rick Ross and David Copperfield hang out on stage in Vegas -- VIDEO

You know that thing when rappers shout out the name of a seemingly completely unrelated public figure in the middle of a verse, making you ponder how it would be to walk in on Robin Williams lecturing Jay-Z  about seizing the day in an empty English classroom or eavesdrop on the Lil Wayne-Bill Gates phone call wherein they discuss the finer points of exceeding baller status?

The Meek Mill-assisted Rick Ross track “Black Magic,” one of several standouts on Maybach Music Group’s recent compilation effort Self Made Vol. 2, has a hook that rhymes: “Poof! There go the car/Poof! there go the crib/Poof! A hundred mil, David Copperfield/David Copperfield, David Copperfield.”

You know where this is headed.

Rick Ross was performing in Las Vegas last night, and revealed in the midst of his set that he had a special guest waiting in the wings: “This is a mother—-in’ icon.  In his field, he the greatest that ever did it.  So, I want you to drop the music at the same time.  Drop the music, let’s go.”

And then, this happened:

A 'New Day' for Alicia Keys: Listen to her brand-new single

Is Alicia Keys back?  The R&B queen has been relatively quiet for a while — her last album, The Element of Freedom, was released in 2009, and her most recent production, son Egypt, arrived in 2010 — but today she returned with a bang (and a drumline).

The 31 year-old Keys, who first rose to stardom with her 2001 breakout Songs in A Minor, uploaded the first single off her upcoming fall album earlier today via her Twitter.

The upbeat “New Day” is a different sound for the usually more subdued Keys — a change undoubtedly due at least in part to her husband Swizz Beatz’s role as the track’s producer.

Listen to “New Day” here, and tell us what you think.  Are you a fan of the new Swizzy-influenced Alicia?
