Oscar voters snub Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' score

There are plenty of complaints this morning about Oscar snubs, and many of the people and films those arguments will name have a genuine case. Considering the year he has had, it’s absurd that Michael Fassbender didn’t get nominated for something (his performance in Shame was the most daring, but there’s a case to be made for his work in Jane Eyre as well as his turn as Magneto in X-Men: First Class), and the fact that treacly pablum like Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close got a nod for Best Picture and Bridesmaids didn’t (a movie that, despite the poop jokes and Kristen Wiig mugging, actually has something to say) is pretty absurd.

But as far as the Music Mix is concerned, the real crimes were committed in the music categories. Only two tunes were nominated for Best Original Song, leaving that roundly excellent and Golden Globe-winning Madonna song on the bench. The one saving grace in this category is the fact that “Man or Muppet” may actually get performed on the show, making it the second best TV appearance by our fine felt friends in 2012 (because nothing will be able to top Miss Piggy’s appearance on Project Runway All Stars).

The real crime is in the Best Original Score category, where Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross were shut out for their exemplary work for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. READ FULL STORY »

Jay-Z banning the 'b-word' now that he's a dad? Not so fast

Yesterday, there was an idea flying around this series of tubes that Jay-Z, he of new fatherhood and extremely public displays of affection, had written a poem about his daughter Blue Ivy where he renounced using the word “b—-” (yeah, not “baby”) in his lyrics.

Though a number of news outlets reported that Jigga was nixing “the b-word” for good and republished the rapper’s supposed prose, nobody could figure out exactly where the words had been published. And even if the poem was real, it didn’t explicitly say that Jay was retiring the word in question.

As it turns out, the whole thing was a figment of the Internet’s imagination. Jay’s representatives reached out to E! to let them know that the poem did not come from their client. They’re uncertain about the origin of the words, but they’re sure that they were not written by Jay-Z.

Honestly, that makes the whole thing a lot less problematic, as swearing off b—- would have created a double-pronged problem for Hova. READ FULL STORY »

Adele says fans may have to wait a while for her next record

When Entertainment Weekly visited with Adele last spring, the singer said that she couldn’t wait to get back into the studio and record the follow-up to her hugely successful 21.

“I need to write my record,” explained the British chanteuse. “[My heart] is already broke. That’s why I need to write the record.” But Adele seems to have changed her tune about recording new tunes.

In a new email interview with Billboard, the 23 year old, who is currently recovering from throat surgery, makes clear that she is now in no hurry to return to the studio: “I imagine I’ll be 25 or 26 by the time my next record comes out, as I haven’t even thought about my third record yet. I’m just gonna lay some concrete, set up home and just ‘be’ for a bit. I’ll disappear and come back with a record when it’s good enough. There will be no new music until it’s good enough and until I’m ready.” READ FULL STORY »

Oh, Lady Gaga. I love you, but do you ever have an inner monologue?

Wrapping up her year of flirting with overexposure, Lady Gaga has given an interview to Vanity Fair, and instead of talking Born This Way and bullying, she decided to get personal in a different way and discuss her relationships, or lack thereof, with men.

She told the magazine, “I have this effect on people where it starts out good. Then, when I’m in these relationships with people who are also creative, or creative in their own way, what happens is the attraction is initially there and it’s all unicorns and rainbows. And then they hate me.”

Interestingly, in her recent Thanksgiving special, Gaga shared that in her very public life, the one thing that is off-limits is her personal relationships (She’s reportedly dating Vampire Diaries actor Taylor Kinney). I guess that decision didn’t extend to trash-talking exs. READ FULL STORY »

Rapper Too Short dead? Not so fast, Twitter!

What does rapper Too $hort have in common with Morgan Freeman and Britney Spears?

The reports of their deaths have been greatly exaggerated on Twitter — with the Oakland hip-hop legend just the latest to suffer Mark Twain’s tragic fate (or not) via 140 characters or less. This disturbing trend regularly freaks out fans, with false info spreading like digital wildfire on the micro blogging site.

Thankfully, Too $hort himself (@tooshort) cleared up the rumors with a rather hilarious series of tweets, (mixed with a little self-promotion!): “ Stop calling my phone. I’m not dead. Been in the lab working on my 19th album #NoTrespassing in stores Feb 2012,” and “Are U serious? How did they say I died this time? And when did wikipidia & twitter become reliable news sources???”

The 45-year-old performer is best known for early Bay Area rap classics like  “I’m a Player” and “Life Is … Too Short”; with any luck, he’ll continue to prove that latter title wrong, whether or not the Twitterati like it.

Conrad Murray on 'Today': 'Something happened when I was not in that room'

Just two days after Dr. Conrad Murray was declared guilty in Michael Jackson’s June 2009 death, the Today show has released a preview of a sitdown between Murray and correspondent Savannah Guthrie. Guthrie’s chat with Murray — filmed before the verdict was handed down — will air in two parts on Thursday and Friday morning in advance of a two-hour special Michael Jackson and the Doctor, which Murray filmed with U.K. Broadcaster Steve Hewlett in November 2009, before he was charged in Jackson’s death. The documentary features behind-the-scenes footage of Murray’s defense team as well as a particularly unsettling set of photos of Jackson’s disordered home. In his Today interview, the doctor steadfastly maintained his innocence, essentially blaming Jackson’s addiction for the singer’s death. Pitbull countersues Lindsay Lohan for that 'Give Me Everything' lyric

Lindsay Lohan just can’t seem to get out of her own way. After doffing her clothes for a Playboy payout and spending a handful of hours in jail, she came out finding that she had been countersued by Pitbull in response to a defamation suit she filed against him.

Back in August, Lohan filed against Pitbull because of a lyric in his hit “Give Me Everything” that went “I got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan.” The beleaguered actress felt that it was an unjust knock against her character (even though she had already been in jail once already), saying “the lyrics, by virtue of its wide appeal, condemnation, excoriation, disparaging or defamatory statements by the defendants about the plaintiff are destined to do irreparable harm to the plaintiff.” The suit was filed in New York, which has a civil rights law protecting a person from having his or her name exploited for commercial gain.

Since the suit was filed just prior to the MTV Video Music Awards, Pitbull did the gentlemanly thing and invited Lohan to join him at the show, where he was performing the song in question. He even left her a ticket at will call.

Lohan didn’t show up, and apparently Pitbull is done playing games, as he has filed a suit of his own against Lohan. His claims that he did in fact have just cause to write that lyric (because, of course, she actually spent time in jail) and also noted that she was ineligible to file the suit in the state of New York, as she clearly lives in California (or at least does time there).

Did Chris Brown knock Drake out in a fight over Rihanna? His rep says the story is 'completely fabricated'

Verbal battles are nothing new in hip-hop and R&B — but this one may have gotten physical.

During an interview with British radio host Tim Westwood, Artist and on-air personality DJ Whoo Kid mentioned offhand that he had witnessed an altercation between Drake and Chris Brown over the former’s relationship with Rihanna.

“Thank God there’s Drake right now,” Whoo Kid said. “He has at least eight records on the radio that’s killing it. Him and Rihanna supposedly fooled around. I think he got elbowed by Chris Brown, too, but that never came out.”

Whoo Kid didn’t mention a time or a place when this incident happened, but when asked for more details, he says he knows exactly where the blow was delivered.

“In the chin, like in the corner. Left part,” he explained to Westwood, who then asked what happened after that. “Man down. Simple as that.”

UPDATE: DJ Whoo Kid tweeted that he and Westwood were joking on the radio, and that “Chris Brown did not knock out Drake!” Brown’s publicist responded to the statement, noting “the Whoo Kid story is completely fabricated and not true.”

You used to be the biggest superstar in country music, selling millions of records and raising just as many eyebrows, but these days, rather than making music for the masses, it seems like you’re more willing to scrape the bottom of the buffoon barrel and simply pander to your “Trailerhood” audience.

Don’t get me wrong, I admire your audacity—you say what you think and you don’t care who you offend—but must you sacrifice your musicality in the process? I mean, your latest single is an ode to the “Red Solo Cup” and you claim that men “do not have testicles if [they] prefer drinking from glass.” Is that really single-worthy?

It’s tough for me to write this because I really liked your music growing up. “Should’ve Been A Cowboy”? Classic. “How Do You Like Me Now”? Delightful. “My List”? Touching. Rihanna compliments Chris Brown once again in the press -- is she being too kind?

No one should be defined by a personal assault, and Rihanna has certainly proved that in her life post-Chris Brown, releasing two albums — 2009′s dark, artistically risk-taking Rated R and 2010′s pop bonanza Loud — touring the world, and generally retaining her position as one of the biggest stars in the Hot 100 universe.

But there is one thing about Rihanna that is becoming problematic, and it has a lot to do with her public relationship with Brown. In multiple interviews (the most recent coming in the new issue of Esquire, in which she was named Sexiest Woman in the World), the 23-year-old seems to go out of her way to compliment the dude who may or may not have bitten her face during an altercation a few years ago, and most certainly left her looking like this.
