Chris Brown apologizes for homophobic Twitter tirade, sort of: Are you convinced?

chris-brownImage Credit: Jordan Strauss/WireImage.comChris Brown has issued a statement regarding his angry Twitter exchange with former B2K member Raz-B, in which he directed a stream of homophobic insults toward the other singer. “Yesterday was an unfortunate lack in judgment sparked by public Twitter attacks from an attention seeking Raz-B,” Brown says in a statement provided by his publicist. “Words cannot begin to express how sorry and frustrated I am over what transpired publicly on Twitter.”

That’s a pretty piece of pseudo-apologetic doublespeak. Brown blames the target of his hateful outburst in the same breath as he expresses regret for “what transpired,” an evasive phrasing meant to spread the responsibility around instead of owning it himself. Sure, Raz-B was probably seeking attention when he tweeted about the true fact that Brown brutally assaulted an ex-girlfriend in 2009. But no one forced Brown to respond with those nasty gay-baiting epithets or to mock Raz-B’s past allegations of sexual abuse. He went there all by himself.

Brown’s statement continues with some slightly more direct thoughts: “I have learned over the past few years to not condone or represent acts of violence against anyone,” he writes. “Molestation and victims of such acts are not to be taken lightly; and for my comments I apologize — from the bottom of my heart. I love all of my fans, gay and straight. I have friends from all walks of life and I am committed, with God’s help, to continue becoming a better person.”

What do you think of Brown’s latest comments? Do you think he’s genuinely contrite about the obnoxious things he said, or just sorry that it happened in public view? Sound off in the comments, below.

Justin Bieber and Chris Brown to collaborate: Awkward?

bieber-brownImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.com Does this make anyone else slightly uncomfortable? On Christmas, Chris Brown tweeted news of a collaboration with Justin Bieber: “ME and @justinbieber got a BANGER/SMASH record for all the fans out there at the top of the NEW YEAR!!! 2011 #BREEZYTAKEOVER,” he wrote. Bieber, for all intents and purposes, scooped him on Twitter in October, when he tweeted “kinda hyped rt now. for a new single teamed up with one of my friends and an artist I used to sing covers of on youtube. BIG RECORD. SMASH!!,” followed by a link to him covering Brown’s “With You” in 2008. On paper, this collaboration makes more sense than the Rascal Flatts duet Bieber also has planned, but I can’t be the only one who took a beat to think about Brown, who was convicted of assaulting his then girlfriend Rihanna, singing to Bieber’s young female fans. Will I dance to it? Yes. But they’re gonna have to market this one carefully. It can’t look like it’s better image rehab than Brown completing his court-ordered course on domestic violence, which he tweeted about four days earlier on Dec. 21. “I have enough self respect and decency to be proud of accomplishing this DV class.. Boyz run from there [sic] mistakes.. Men learn from them!!! thx,” he wrote. Too soon, or right on time?

Usher accidentally kicked in the face while seducing a fan on stage

Usher‘s OMG tour made its way through New York’s Madison Square Garden on Monday (Dec. 13). As I said in my review, it was filled with booms and pows from pyrotechnics and explosions. But there was one bang received that Usher totally didn’t expect when brought a fan on stage to sing “Trading Places.”  Excited, she was eager to get close to the R&B stud. Seemingly living out a dream, she wrapped her legs around him during their hug and then the two slow danced. But things got a little rough after he led her to the couch.

She started off lying on his chest as he sang into her ear and pecked her on the cheek. Then as he prepared to cap off the song–just eight words away from the end–she sprouted up. Attempting to straddle Usher, she whipped her leg up and almost across him. Her heeled shoe caught Usher’s face before it got there, though. Ouch. Gasps filled the Garden. Embarrassed and so very sorry, she immediately apologized. The star took it all in stride. “We play rough in the bed,” he joked. “We kick each other in the face and all kind of good stuff.” They hugged and that was that.

Check out the video below. Things go south around the 9:15 mark.

I’ve seen fans try some bold stuff at shows before but this is by far the most awkward moment I’ve laid eyes on. Can you think of any you’ve seen in the past? What would you have done had you been in that position? Let us know.

'Glee' star Kevin McHale, Kendall Jenner join One Call for 'BlackLight' video

And you thought that there was only Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe! Fourteen-year-old Kendall Jenner (daughter of Kris and Bruce), makes a cameo in boy band One Call’s official music video for “BlackLight,” an ode to everyone’s least favorite lighting scheme. Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars) and Kevin McHale (Glee) are also in the house for this mysterious warehouse party (which channels Britney Spears‘ diner-esque romp with Melissa Joan Hart and Adrian Grenier in the “(You Drive Me) Crazy” music video), although Artie certainly could have helped the boys out with some of his signature dance moves. Miami Police Department 'inadvertently' depicts Jay-Z as gang member: Whoops!

miami-police-site-jay-zJay-Z has been called the best rapper alive, the ultimate hip-hop entrepreneur, and one of President Obama’s favorite musicians. Would you ever confuse him with a dangerous gang member? The real Jay-Z is nothing of the kind, of course. Yet that’s the impression you might have gotten if you visited the Miami Police Department‘s website yesterday, where a PSA banner included two obvious sketches of the renowned recording artist next to the headline “REPORT GANG ACTIVITY.”

This bizarre faux pas was first discovered by the Miami New Times, which even identified the specific Jay-Z publicity shots that were ripped off for the anti-gang display. (By my estimation, the photos date from at least eight or nine years ago, back when Jay was still wearing throwback jerseys and t-shirts instead of bespoke suits.) After being brought to light by the New Times, the entire image featuring the ersatz Jay-Zs was promptly removed from the police department’s website. So what on earth happened here?

“It was something that was inadvertently done,” the Miami Police Department’s Officer Kenia Reyes tells EW. “It was a mistake.” Reyes blamed the mix-up on the Miami PD’s computer department and declined to comment further.

A representative for Jay-Z had no comment on this story.

What do you think of the Miami Police Department’s odd mistake? Sound off in the comments.

will.i.am attacked online for 'blackface' makeup at VMAs pre-show, hits Twitter to defend himself

will-i-amImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.comKanye and Taylor weren’t the only talking pieces after last night’s VMAs. Black Eyed Peas leading man will.i.am also sparked up a bit of controversy when he performed alongside rapper Nicki Minaj during the pre-show. Though not purposefully, the eccentric rapper and producer known for his futuristic costumes ticked off some of his fans after wearing an all black leather outfit and matching black makeup all over his face.

Instantly the Twitterverse hopped on their computers and smartphones to cry foul, comparing his makeup to the racist 19th century blackface minstrel shows. When Will caught wind of the criticism, he responded through his Twitter account to defend his costume choice.

“1st. just because I where all black including head mask as expression and emphasize my outfit, it shouldn’t be looked at as racial…,” he tweeted. “Let go of the past. there are far more important things 2 bark about. (Jobs, health, education) not a black man wearing all black everything,” he followed. Then after noticing that people were still attacking him, he asked, “Are you guys serious? my outfit set “black people back 100 yrs” choose your twits wisely. no education sets people back, no jobs, bad health.”

Personally, I think these accusations are nuts. In the past Will has participated in various causes for uplifting black people–really, all people. He was one of the first artists to campaign, promote, and support Barack Obama’s presidential run years ago and frequently returns the impoverished East Los Angeles neighborhood he grew up in to speak to its children. And let me not forget to mention that he does all of this philanthropic work during breaks from making huge pop records that boast positive messages.

If there’s anything that Will’s guilty of, it’s giving people the benefit of the doubt and hoping that his costume would be seen simply as interesting, fun, and artsy. I, for one, knew the peanut gallery would think otherwise. I can’t say I loved his makeup. Will probably should have known that more than a few people would be peeved and nixed it. But I’m pretty sure that there was nothing malicious behind the concept.

What do you think? Was Will’s makeup a slap in the face to African Americans or just an eccentric’s mistake? Sound off in the comments below.

Taylor Momsen's 'scandalous' new video 'Miss Nothing' : Gossip Girl on a platter

Taylor-Momsen-video She’s totally not Miley, you guys! She can objectify her own self without any help from stupid Disney, dammit! Or anything resembling dignity. Or pants.

That’s the message Gossip Girl star and The Pretty Reckless frontwoman-child Taylor Momsen seems determined to drive home in every raccoon-eyed, shredded-thigh-high rebel yell she issues in interviews, on unsuspecting sidewalks, and now, in her latest video, for the single “Miss Nothing.”

I can’t lie; I moderately enjoy the whole late-period Garbage/Hole rock-vixen redux thing she’s working on the band’s new EP. In its own shamelessly derivative way, “Makes Me Wanna Die” is kind of a great Shirley Manson approximation, despite sharing its title with another, better song from (hey!) the mid ’90s.

But sweetie, no. Putting your underage heinie on the menu in the video for “Miss Nothing” is not only inappropriate (you weren’t even born until 1993), it’s unhygenic. You’ve got your hair tracks in the mashed potatoes and your ass in the cranberry sauce.

Please, just let the nice men (bandmates? uncles?), who look like they would so desperately rather be at a gig with their System of a Down cover band, drink their goblets of mead and eat their Ren Faire turkey drumsticks in peace.

Chris Brown's Michael Jackson tribute at the BET Awards: How did it make you feel?

chris-brown-jackson-tributeImage Credit: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic.comIt was without a doubt the most divisive performance at the 2010 BET Awards last night. To cap off the scheduled Michael Jackson tribute, tarnished R&B star Chris Brown came out and did a flawless moonwalk, only to break down in tears as he tried to sing “Man in the Mirror.”

Brown’s overwhelming display of emotion spoke to many people watching the awards. For these viewers, Brown was turning the page on the tumultuous phase of his career that began when he infamously beat then-girlfriend Rihanna last February. Others, like me, felt the precise opposite way. Brown pleaded guilty just a year ago to a very serious felony. Intimate partner violence is not something you can make up for with a few well-executed dance moves or on-stage sobs. In this view, there was something unseemly about Brown using a tribute to a late legend as an opportunity to turn the spotlight on himself and score some career-rehab points.

Which side do you come down on? Did you find Chris Brown’s Michael Jackson tribute moving or uncomfortable? Was it appropriate or not? Vote in the poll below.

Anita Baker drops the ball singing national anthem at NBA finals

anita-bakerImage Credit: Elsa/Getty ImagesFolks at Boston’s TD Banknorth Garden last night (June 10) to watch the Boston Celtics play against the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 4 of the NBA finals must have been delighted to know that repeat Grammy award winner Anita Baker would be singing the “Star Spangled Banner” before the game. And why shouldn’t they have? She’s a R&B legend whose vocal skills have wowed many for decades. Then she sang. And boy, was it bad.

Mind you, Baker is regularly invited to sing the national anthem at sporting events. That wasn’t her first time around a court or stadium. I doubt Baker will be getting many invites after last night, though. Check out her woeful performance here. The off-key showing soon propelled her to Trending Topic status on Twitter, as thousands of disappointed viewers sounded off on how much they didn’t enjoy it.

Funny thing is, Baker appeared not to even notice how bad she was. What do you think? Was her performance that bad? Or are people just overreacting? Let us know.

50 Cent drops 50 pounds for movie role: See the shocking pictures here

50-centImage Credit: thisis50.comWhoa! 50 Cent (real name: Curtis Jackson) made a hell of a sacrifice for his upcoming movie. Usually the MC looks like an NFL linebacker. But for his starring role in the Mario Van Peebles-directed Things Fall Apart, a movie he wrote, 50 dropped 54 pounds to play a college football player battling cancer. On a liquid diet and three-hour-a-day treadmill stints, he went from 214 pounds to a sickly 160 pounds, reports US Weekly.

It’s not unusual for actors to lose extreme weight for movie parts. Matt Damon got bony for Courage Under Fire. Will Smith shrunk for Seven Pounds, and Christian Bale got frail for The Machinist. But those were all for major releases. There’s no word yet on if this movie will hit theaters or not.

Maybe this will be 50′s breakout role. But there’s a good chance it won’t. As an actor, 50 Cent has only starred in a handful of major releases and straight-to-DVD castoffs. His film debut came in 2005 with the semi-autobiographical Get Rich or Die Tryin’, and in 2008 he acted alongside Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in the commercial flop Righteous Kill. All of his showings suggest that he should stick to his day job, though it seems he’s bent on Hollywood stardom.

50′s currently out on his national Invitation tour and back in fighting shape. On his website, a recent picture shows a healthier 50 rapping with his G-Unit mates Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo. Check out another picture of the slim 50 after the jump.
