Carly Rae Jepsen cancels Boy Scouts concert

Carly-Rae-Jepsen_510x317.jpg

Carly Rae Jepsen doesn’t want the Boy Scouts to call her. Ever.

The singer was set to headline the Boy Scouts’ 2013 Jamboree this summer, but after a Change.org petition, which gathered 62,000 signatures in just four days, asked Jepsen to reconsider, she did. “As talented artists with incredibly loyal LGBT fans around the globe, I hope they will speak out quickly, and urge the Boy Scouts to end its dangerous anti-gay policy,” the petition read in part.

“As an artist who believes in equality for all people, I will not be participating in the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree this summer,” Jepsen wrote on Twitter this morning. “I always have and will continue to support the LGBT community on a global level and stay informed on the ever changing landscape in the ongoing battle for gay rights in this country and across the globe.” READ FULL STORY »

Best of 2012: The year in lyrics, from Taylor Swift to Carly Rae

call-me-maybe.jpg

Music makes the people come together — but lyrics might be even more powerful as unification tools. Think about it: Whether you’re a rap fiend or a hater of all things hip hop, you have to admire a guy who figures out a way to rhyme “narcissist” with “lobster bisque.” See below to find out what we’ve dubbed 2012′s top five lyrics, which artists warbled 2012′s worst five lyrics, and which lyric won the dubious honor of being the year’s best AND worst at the same time. (Hint: Think “Call Me Maybe.”)

Train on VH1's 'Behind the Music': The story behind hit 'Drops of Jupiter' -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

TRAIN-MONAHAN.jpg

Can you believe that VH1′s Behind the Music is turning 15?

The series launches its latest season this Sunday, Sept. 16, at 9 p.m. with an hour focused on pop-rock band Train, which delivered its biggest hit in 2009 with “Hey, Soul Sister.” But it’s actually another of their singles — 2001′s “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)” — that truly launched them, climbing to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

That song is the subject of an online-only, Behind the Music companion series titled Behind the Song, which EW is exclusively debuting below.

The process of creation wasn’t easy, according to frontman Pat Monahan: “I just couldn’t figure out what to write, but then I woke up from a dream about a year after my mother passed away with the words ‘back in the atmosphere,’” he remembers. “It was just her way of saying what it was like — she was swimming through the planets and came to me with drops of Jupiter in her hair.”

The rest, as they say, is history. The full, four-minute Behind the Song episode is below, and parts of it are woven into Sunday’s season premiere episode of Behind the Music, which will also touch on Train’s multiplatinum success, struggles ith drug addiction, money woes, and two-year hiatus.

On the Charts: Carly Rae has a 'Good Time', Train chugs along, Adele finally drops out of Top 10

Carly-Rae-Jepsen

Last week, Maroon 5 made waves when they pushed not one but two of their singles into the Top 10 of the Hot 100. This week, current pop princess Carly Rae Jepsen did the same thing.

Not only is Jepsen’s unstoppable hit “Call Me Maybe” still refusing to hang up — though it did drop from No. 4 to No. 6 — her Owl City collaboration “Good Time” also jumped from No. 13 to No. 9 in its ninth week on the chart.

According to Billboard, “Good Time” had a pretty great week; the song was the top Streaming Gainer and rose into the Top 10 of the On-Demand chart. It also increased by 10 percent at radio and by 13 percent on the Digital Songs chart, as the beachy hit sold an additional 144,000 downloads, which lifted its sales total right past the 1 million mark.

We’ll find out if “Good Time” gives Jepsen (who is the first female artist since Ke$ha to take her first two singles to the Top 10) that elusive second No. 1 in the weeks to come, but for now, let’s check the week’s other chart winners and losers: READ FULL STORY »

A quick glance at the last few weeks of Billboard‘s Hot 100 makes it clear that a handful of songs are ready to break Kelly Clarkson and Adele’s stronghold on the upper tier of the pop charts.

This week, following a cover on the Regionals episode of Glee, British boy band The Wanted‘s “Glad You Came” shot up from number 23 all the way to number 5 on the Hot 100 (not to brag, but we diiid say, “‘Glad You Came’ feels like a potential radio/club titan poised to become a hit” back in early February), and it’s likely that the boy-band jam will continue its ascent in the weeks to come.

But “Glad You Came” isnt the only new track making waves — a number of other buzzworthy songs are climbing up the chart as well. Take a look at a few especially notable performances from the past two weeks: READ FULL STORY »

Grammy Awards 2011: Backstage with Justin Bieber, Usher, Esperanza Spalding, Matthew Morrison, and many more

esparanza-spaldingImage Credit: Kevork Djansezian/Getty ImagesAs you might imagine, backstage at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards is a press feeding frenzy, with golden gramophone winners — and even some presenters — parading behind-the-scenes to various media outlets to take their questions and revel in the celebratory mood of the evening. The bold-faced names trek from the radio press to TV shows like Extra and — you guessed it — even us here in the print and online world. I resided backstage for the show and waited for folks like Esperanza Spalding, Usher, Justin Bieber, Train, and Matthew Morrison to come and bask with the reporters for a bit. Here’s what minute-by-minute account of what transpired:

6:15 P.M. PT: The band Train, winners for Best Pop Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocals for their smash single “Hey, Soul Sister,” are both the first winners of the evening and the first winners to come backstage for the evening. The first question for the group is about their surprising comeback last year with “Soul Sister.” “We’ve been through a lot, and to be here after so many years, it’s such an honor to be nominated,” says vocalist Patrick Monahan. “This was a beautiful comeback nomination. We feel we have many more albums to come that are going to be better. To have won this makes up for things that didn’t even exist.”

Carlos Santana goes to 'Guitar Heaven' with help from Rob Thomas, Chris Daughtry, Nas, and more: Full tracklist revealed

Carlos-SantanaImage Credit: Albert L. Ortega/PR PhotoSince 1999′s megasmash Supernatural, Carlos Santana has mostly stuck with that album’s eclectic, guest-heavy format for his subsequent releases. Now he’s taking the collaborative spirit one step further. On Sept. 21′s Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time, the famed guitarist enlisted at least one famous friend to perform on each of 13 covers.

The full line-up for Guitar Heaven was finalized via press release today. You can check it out after the jump. As you’ll see, Santana brought back his “Smooth” pal Rob Thomas for Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love.” Grungy growlers dominate the rest of the track list, including Chris Cornell on Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love,” Scott Weiland on the Rolling Stones’ “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’,” Gavin Rossdale on T. Rex’s “Bang a Gong,” Chris Daughtry on Def Leppard’s “Photograph,” and Scott Stapp on Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son.” Then there’s Santana’s take on AC/DC’s “Back in Black,” which will feature rapping from Queensbridge’s own Nas.

Some of those pairings could work quite well. I’d definitely like to hear what Nas can do over those crunchy power chords. Gavin Rossdale going glam sounds intriguing. Anyone who’s heard a Stone Temple Pilots album knows Scott Weiland can do a solid Mick Jagger impression. And Joe Cocker gnashing his way through Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” should be well worth hearing. As for the turgid Scott Stapp attempting Creedence’s protest anthem? Yeah, that one’s an instant skip for me.

But what do you think? Take a look at the full track list for Carlos Santana’s Guitar Heaven after the jump and let us know which of these covers you’d like to hear.

Usher regains No. 1 spot, Katy Perry debuts big on Billboard's Hot 100 chart

katy-perry-usherImage Credit: Perry: Mike RuizEminem‘s reign at the top didn’t last long. After pushing Usher aside last week, his “Not Afraid” has fallen from No. 1 to No. 6 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 singles chart. Usher‘s “OMG”reclaims the crown at No.1.

Katy Perry first single from her forthcoming set, “California Gurls” featuring Snoop Dogg, made a big splash on the charts. Her West Coast anthem debuts at No. 2 this week. Songs like Miley Cyrus’ 2009 “Party in the U.S.A” and The Notorious B.I.G.’s  1997 smash “Hypnotize” have also accomplished the feat. Perry is the fourteenth to do so.

B.o.B has two consecutive cuts in the top 10. His latest single, “Airplanes,” featuring Hayley Williams, climbs from No. 5 to No. 3. While his once chart-topping “Nothin’ On You,” featuring Bruno Mars dropped from No. 3 to No. 4.  Taio Cruz’s “Break Your Heart,” featuring Ludacris, backslides from No. 4 to No. 5.

Ke$ha‘s “Your Love Is My Drug” steps up a spot to No. 7. Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” enters the top 10, moving from No. 11 to No. 7.  This marks her seventh radio single in a row to reach the top 10.

Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” moves back three spots to No. 9. And rounding out the top, Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” does the same falling to No. 10.

Surprised Eminem dropped to No. 6 so fast? Happy Katy Perry debuted this high? Let us know.
