December's 'VH1 Divas' adds Chaka, Eryka, Estelle, and -- yes -- some boys

Divas, make way! VH1 has added a bevy of other ladies — and, yes, some dudes, too — to the line-up for its annual special VH1 Divas, including Chaka Kahn (pictured here), Erykah Badu, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Estelle, Marsha Ambrosius. The non-diva entities –i.e. those who have a Y chromosome — added include Boyz II Men and Travie McCoy.

The seven new acts join the previously announced divas, which include Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, Florence Welch, Jennifer Hudson, Jessie J, and Jill Scott. The Roots will serve as the house band for the engagement.

VH1 Divas will celebrate soul this year, honoring so-called “soulful cities” — Chicago, Detroit, London, Memphis, and Philadelphia — that inspired the participating divas and their art. The special airs Monday, Dec. 19, at 9 p.m. on VH1.

Travie McCoy 'stoked' that 'Glee' is covering his summer smash 'Billionaire' on season premiere

Travie-McCoyImage Credit: Quang LeEven though he’s coming off a huge summer where his Bruno Mars-assisted “Billionaire” ruled the charts, Travie McCoy’s run isn’t slowing down just yet. Fox’s cheery drama, Glee, will breathe new life into the aspirational cut tonight (Sept. 21) on the premiere of its second season. The Gym Class Hero is a fan of the show, so he couldn’t turn them down when he heard they wanted his song.

“They just came to my management to get the okay,” Travie say.  “Once I found out, I was all about it. I was just watching Glee last night. I didn’t realize how deep that show is. It’s funny, but there’s definitely some serious s— going on. I’m stoked to be a part of it.” McCoy hasn’t seen or heard Glee’s version yet. He’ll be tuning in tonight like everyone else. “I’m excited to see how they’re going to pull it off,” he says.

Travie just released his latest single, the mid-tempo breakup cut “Need You” and is currently out with director Shane Valdés shooting its video. But he’s also excited about getting together with his group again for the next Gym Class Heroes album. They’ll be getting in the studio later this year to work on it. McCoy’s hoping to release the album next summer, saying that they’ve already knocked out a bunch of tracks.

“We had a little free time before the summer and we rented an abandoned church in upstate New York and we got about 12-13 songs done there,” he says. “Now we’re about 16-17 demos deep. They’re still all rough, but there’s a lot of potential there. It’s a good head start to have going into writing a record. There’s no pressure.”

Will you be tuning into Glee‘s premiere tonight? Are you excited for the next GCH album? Let us know.

'Sims 3' exclusive: Travie McCoy, My Chemical Romance and more sing in Simlish

Travie-McCoyWhen you turn on a radio, stereo, or jukebox in the new Sims games arriving on Oct. 26, you might find some of your favorite musicians singing in Simlish. Electronic Arts has given the Music Mix an exclusive sneak peek at the artists who have re-recorded their tunes in the popular gaming series’ fictional language, and the list includes some pretty big names.

Selected highlights of the re-recorded Simlish songs in The Sims 3 (for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii) include 3OH!3’s “Double Vision,” Flo Rida and Jovi’s “Fresh I Stay,” and School of Seven Bells’ “Dust Devil.” The Sims 3 Late Night expansion pack (for PC and Mac) will feature Simlish versions of Travie McCoy’s “Need You,” My Chemical Romance’s “Na Na Na,” Soulja Boy’s “Speakers Going Hammer,” Kelly Rowland’s “Rose Colored Glasses,” and many more.

Excited for any of those artists to join The Sims? Who else would you like to hear singing in Simlish?

Travie McCoy says Gym Class Heroes want to 'recapture the rawness' with their next album

Gym-Class-HeroesImage Credit: Larry Busacca/Getty ImagesFrontman Travie McCoy is doing his solo “Billionaire” thing at the moment, but he and the rest of Gym Class Heroes are already thinking about their next move as a group. “We have close to 15 demos written for the next Gym Class record,” McCoy recently told EW.

I spoke with the rapper in between his opening performances on Rihanna‘s current tour, where Gym Class Heroes drummer Matt McGinley is keeping the beat for him. McCoy was looking forward to guitarist Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo visiting them on the road soon. “We’re going to start writing some more stuff,” he said. “Once things slow down a little bit for this cycle, we’re definitely diving head first into the next Gym Class record.”

While it’s too early to know exactly what the follow-up to GCH’s 2008 album The Quilt will sound like, McCoy has some ideas. “We’re going to go back to what drew people to us in the beginning: the four of us in a room just jamming until something sounded cool,” he said. “We’re going to try to stay away from working with a lot of producers on this record. We want to recapture the rawness that got us signed and revisit upstate New York, where we wrote a lot of [2005’s] The Papercut Chronicles.”

Are you looking forward to Gym Class Heroes’ return? What do you hope their next album will sound like?

Eminem's 'Love The Way You Lie' pushes Katy Perry's 'Gurls' to No. 2 on Billboard Hot 100 chart

eminem-katy-perryImage Credit: Karin Catt; Ari MichelsonKaty Perry‘s “California Gurls” reigned at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for six weeks. But it’s over now. When the entire chart is released tomorrow, Eminem‘s Rihanna-assisted “Love The Way You Lie” will be No. 1 and Perry No. 2. This is the Detroit rapper’s fourth Hot 100 No. 1. single, and the second from his latest, Recovery. His first single from this album, “Not Afraid,” debuted at No. 1. Em’s having an amazing day; this morning we reported that he’s also got the No. 1 album in the country again.

No one new entered the top 10 this week. B.o.B’s “Airplanes” stays at No. 3, Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite” moves from No. 6 to No. 4. Usher’s former No. 1, “OMG,” drops one place to No. 5. Mike Posner’s “Cooler Than Me” moves up one to No. 6. While “Billionaire” by Travie McCoy falls two places to No. 7. “I Like It” by Enrique Iglesias holds at No. 8. Drake’s “Find Your Love” stays at No. 9. And Jason Derulo’s “Ridin’ Solo” remains at No. 10.

What do you think of Eminem’s run? Are you a fan of Recovery and it’s singles? Think Katy can regain her No. 1 spot? Let us know.

Katy Perry leads Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, Black Eyed Peas return to top 10

katy-perry-bepLike we said yesterday, Katy Perry is queen of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with “California Gurls” landing at No. 1 this week. Usher gets pushed aside. His “OMG” steps back a spot to No. 2. B.o.B’s Hayley Williams-assisted “Airplanes” sits  at No. 3 again. Ke$ha’s “Your Love Is My Drug” remains at No. 4.

Travie McCoy jumps into the top 10 for the first time as a solo act with “Billionaire.” It moves from No. 11 to No. 5. Singer Bruno Mars is secretly the big winner in the top 10. He’s the featured vocalist and producer on McCoy’s “Billionaire” and B.o.B’s No. 8 hit “Nothin’ On You.”

Taio Cruz’s “Break Your Heart” slips a place to No. 6. Lady Gaga‘s “Alejandro” also falls a spot to No. 7. After a brief vacation from the top 10, the Black Eyed Peas return with their fifth top 10 single from their multi-platinum set The E.N.D. The latest, “Rock That Body,” leaps from no. 19 to No. 9. La Roux‘s “Bulletproof” closes out the top 10, dropping from No. 8 to No. 10.

What do you think of this week’s results? Happy the Peas are back to their old ways? How long do you think Katy Perry will be at No. 1? Let us know.
