With a hit single—the strummy, propulsive anthem “Riptide,” which spent five weeks atop the Billboard Alternative chart this fall—major festival gigs, and a North American headlining tour, Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy was already set to finish out 2014 as one of the buzziest new-folk troubadours since Bon Iver. And that was before Taylor Swift (perhaps you’ve heard of her) tapped the former semiprofessional athlete born James Keough to open on her world tour kicking off May 20.

No one attempted such a thing at Hammerstein Ballroom on Saturday night, where Young the Giant were playing their second consecutive “Mind Over Matter” tour date in New York City. But it wasn’t hard to imagine the largely college-age crowd on a different weekend, at a party closer to campus, watching the kind of fraternity hijinks recently chronicled in the vivid first paragraph of this article. They were, after all, drinking beer out of plastic cups, mingling with the opposite sex, and watching a dude in an untucked dress shirt dancing by himself.

After putting in his time on the Melbourne open-mic circuit, the Australian singer-songwriter landed gigs opening for the likes of Of Monsters and Men and Ben Howard, and his debut EP God Loves You When You’re Dancing is slated for a Stateside release Sept. 3.

The album’s lead single,”Riptide,” is already rising on the Aussie charts, and the original, excellently weird clip already has more than half a million pageviews on YouTube– but you can watch the song’s new, more intimate acoustic video exclusively here:
