Pre-order the new Spoon LP, get instant Vinyl Gratification

One of the cleverer tactics that digital retailers like the iTunes Store have used to corner the global music retail market is offering “instant gratification” tracks with its pre-orders, giving consumers the option of downloading one or more songs from an album when they pre-order it. Not only does it keep the buyer from shopping around for a better price once the record’s out, it’s also not something that brick-and-mortar retailers—from big boxes on down to local indie shops—can replicate, constrained as they are by the realities of physical media.

Indie-rock heroes Spoon have finally figured out a real-life equivalent to the online instant-gratification track: Starting July 15, fans can pre-order the band’s upcoming LP They Want My Soul (out August 5 on Loma Vista) from a participating independent retailer and take home a 10-inch vinyl record that includes the album’s lead single (“Do You”) and two other songs. In a statement, Spoon frontman Britt Daniel writes, “If like me, you’ve ever rushed home with a brand new record that you couldn’t wait to play—and couldn’t actually play until you slapped it onto your turntable—I hope the Vinyl Gratification program will bring back some magic for you. And I hope you’ll join us in supporting the independent record shops that have supported us for so long.”

Spoon isn’t completely ignoring digital retailers, though. Pre-order through iTunes or Amazon and you can download “Do You” as an instant-gratification track.

More info and a store locator are available at Spoon’s website.

Justin Timberlake releasing all of 'The 20/20 Experience' on deluxe vinyl

With his computer-twerky Timbaland beats and throwback tuxes, few people blend the past and the future better than Justin Timberlake. He’ll go a step further once The 20/20 Experience — 2 of 2 hits the streets in October, when you’ll be able to buy the entirety of The 20/20 Experience on a super-deluxe four-LP vinyl set.

Hitting store shelves on October 1 (the same day as 2 of 2 lands), The 20/20 Experience: Complete Experience will feature four vinyl discs with every song from Timberlake’s comeback project. Vinyl is a logical choice for Timberlake — it’s a classic piece of technology (the old) that has nevertheless seen a resurgence (the new): Vinyl sales are expected to move nearly six million units this year, an increase of almost 30 percent over last year’s numbers. And vinyl has been good to Timberlake, too; the vinyl version of The 20/20 Experience has been a steady seller since its release back in March.

Will you pick up the extra-large, extra-bulky, extra-expensive version of The 20/20 Experience in October? While we’re at it: How much vinyl do you buy? I find I tend to gravitate to older stuff when it comes to LPs, but I’m more likely to buy a new hip-hop album in 12-inch form than any other format. What’s your approach? Let us know in the comments.

Record Store Day 2013: What's on your must-have list for the annual vinyl bonanza? Here's ours

RECORD-STORE-DAY.jpg

This Saturday, April 20, a great yearly tradition arrives once again.

No, not that one. We’re talking about the sixth annual Record Store Day, which pays tribute to the independently-owned record stores that were once ubiquitous but are often now fighting just to stay afloat in in the iTunes and Amazon age.

The day is more than just a tribute to the fetishization of vinyl; it also honors the sense of community that comes when a bunch of music obsessives get together to talk about their favorite stuff — and kick-fight in the aisles over a limited-edition Roky Erikson 7-inch, or whatever their coveted object may be. (Check out the impressively large list of stores that are participating in this year’s festivities.)

Though there are plenty of live in-store performances, signings, and giveaways, the main attraction has become the vinyl releases that surface for one day only (and then for an eternity on eBay). This year’s list doesn’t have the same parade of heavy hitters as last year’s, but there are still plenty of goodies worth seeking.

I love Record Store Day, mostly because I just love record stores. I’ll be celebrating this year at my home base during my high school years, and here’s what I’ll be searching for:  READ FULL STORY

Jack White slams Lady Gaga in Esquire UK: 'All image with no meaning' -- UPDATE: White clarifies his comments in a formal statement

In a move that will surprise approximately no one, rock messiah Jack White has expressed his distaste for Lady Gaga. The former White Stripes frontman told Esquire UK, “I don’t think she lives it because it’s all artifice.”

He added, “It’s all image with no meaning behind it. You can’t sink your teeth into it. It’s a sound bite. It’s very of this age, because that’s what people want. They want a Twitter line, a jpeg, an MP3.” READ FULL STORY
