Ecstatic applause echoed through Manhattan’s Town Hall when the four members of Grizzly Bear walked onstage last night. The cheers got louder as singer/guitarist Edward Droste greeted them with a simple “Good evening” a moment later. And when, next, the band played the opening notes of “Southern Point,” the crowd went wild all over again. Grizzly Bear has been the kind of band that inspires such rapturous adoration among its fans (who most definitely include yours truly) for some time now. Last night, though, we had more occasion to applaud than usual. This past Tuesday marked the release of Veckatimest, Grizzly Bear’s third full-length release and my personal odds-on favorite for album of the year. The band has been playing some of the songs on Veckatimest in concert for well over a year, but now that this quite deservedly hyped-beyond-hype album is actually in stores, something felt different. Grizzly Bear has reached a peak in its career to date, which makes its three sold-out shows this week in the band’s home base of New York City something like a victory lap. Read on after the jump for my review of last night’s show, plus a full set list.

What 'grown-up' songs do your kids love?
My brother’s youngest son, Magnus, who is like a towheaded four-year-old version of Owen Meany (read: adorable and precocious and unintentionally hilarious), marched into the kitchen the other day, unannounced, to declare his top three songs of all time to my brother:
- "Vertigo" by U2
- "Oh L’amour" by Erasure
- The "I married my dream girl" song from the FreeCreditReport.com commercial
He also requested my brother ask me to bring some salami over to their house. But I digress…. Who knows where a kid hears a tune by a British synth-pop duo that came out nearly two decades before he was born — let alone why he likes it? Certainly not me, nor my brother.
But, more importantly, what songs do your kids love? And are they more random than Magnus’ favorite jams?

Robert Smith counts down his favorite '80s songs. Do you agree?
Cure frontman (and ponytail-sporting Coachella curfew-buster) Robert Smith hosted a two-hour countdown of his favorite songs from the ’80s on SIRIUS XM’s 1st Wave channel at noon today. It’ll be re-broadcast through the weekend, but we snagged the full list for you, Mixers, so you can match up your tastes with the legendary mopester. My favorite of his Top 30 is embedded here (okay, it’s my second favorite; YouTube wouldn’t let me embed the Bowie). After the jump, see the full list… and then totally bitch him out for forgetting something.

Ozzy sues Iommi: It's a black day for Sabbath fans!
We’re used to Ozzy Osbourne riding the "Crazy Train." But apparently, the ex-Black Sabbath frontman has boarded a less-obviously-nuts mode of transport — and it’s headed towards a court of law.
According to the New York Post, Osbourne is suing Sabs guitarist Tony Iommi for a 50% interest in the BS name and a portion of Iommi’s profits. The suit also asserts Iommi illegally claimed ownership of the Sabbath moniker, and that Black Sabbath’s popularity decreased following Osbourne’s departure — which, apart from anything else, adds another chapter to Ozzy’s feud with his Sabs successor Ronnie James Dio.
It’s always regrettable when former bandmates fall out like this. Unless you’re a lawyer, of course. Those guys love this stuff! But what do you think? Does this signal the final end of Osbourne and Iommi’s partnership? Has Ozzy gone off the rails? And how are you liking these train jokes?
Update, 5.30 PM EST, May 29, 2009: Ozzy Osbourne has issued the following statement…
“It is with great regret that I had to resort to legal action against my long term partner, Tony Iommi, but after three years of trying to resolve this issue amicably, I feel I have no other recourse. As of the mid-1990’s, after constant and numerous changes in band members, the brand of "Black Sabbath" was literally in the toilet and Tony Iommi (touring under the name Black Sabbath) was reduced to performing in clubs. Since 1997 when Geezer, Bill and myself rejoined the band, Black Sabbath has returned to its former glory as we headlined sold-out arenas and amphitheatres playing to upwards of 50,000 people at each show around the world. We worked collectively to restore credibility and bring dignity back to the name “Black Sabbath” which lead to the band being inducted into the UK and US Rock & Roll Hall of Fames in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Throughout the last 12 years, it was my management representatives who oversaw the marketing and quality control of the “Black Sabbath” brand through OZZFEST, touring, merchandising and album reissues. The name "Black Sabbath" now has a worldwide prestige and merchandising value that it would not have had by continuing on the road it was on prior to the 1997 reunion tour. Tony, I am so sorry it’s had to get to this point by me having to take this action against you. I don’t have the right to speak for Geezer and Bill, but I feel that morally and ethically the trademark should be owned by the four of us equally. I hope that by me taking this first step that it will ultimately end up that way. We’ve all worked too hard and long in our careers to allow you to sell merchandise that features all our faces, old Black Sabbath album covers and band logos, and then you tell us that you own the copyright. We’re all in our 60’s now. The Black Sabbath legacy should live on long after we have all gone. Please do the right thing.”

Def Leppard and YouTube announce lip-synching contest
YouTube and Def Leppard.com are offering a chance to see the Pyromania-cal ’80s rockers on tour this summer with Poison and Cheap Trick — and all you have to do is videotape what you do every day anyway (i.e., shut office door, crank up "Pour Some Sugar On Me," sing along like off-key banshee while pouring pilfered packets of Splenda from work coffee station down writhing body).
For contest rules and uploading instructions, click here, and if you decide to enter, you might be one of ten winners to earn two tickets, a backstage tour, and a meet-and-greet with the band. Submissions are accepted starting today, and the contest closes June 17. It can’t be that hard, right? I mean, this kid didn’t even bother to stand up, and he still works it out:

In concert: LL Cool J and Estelle -- plus word on Estelle's upcoming album
Last night at New York’s Terminal 5, the five-city Grammy Celebration tour wound up with an old-school, hit-filled set from headliner LL Cool J (more on that later) and support from Brit R&B star Estelle. The latter told EW backstage that fans may not have to wait much longer for a follow-up to her 2008 breakthrough, Shine. "I’m working on my new album right now," she said, "I’m about five songs into it. It should be out this fall, in October or November."
Her sunny ’08 single "American Boy" was one of the sweetest success stories of last year; the catchy Kanye West collaboration cracked the Billboard top 10 and nabbed a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Estelle says West is one of her "favorite artists" and expects to work with him again.
Shine featured an eclectic group of guests, ranging from will.i.am and Cee-Lo to Mark Ronson and John Legend, and Estelle promises another grab-bag of famous names this time around, too: "I’m working with Swizz Beats, Kid Sister — her new album drops soon, look out for that! — and Dave Sitek, of TV on the Radio." (The guitarist and producer has worked with everyone from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Scarlett Johansson). Click through for a breakdown of her and LL’s eclectic Grammy tour sets.
Lady GaGa's new 'Paparazzi' video/mini-movie: We have no words
We lied! We have some words.
Though "LoveGame" is the track officially slated to follow previous no. 1s "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" on the charts, GaGa’s nearly 8-minute long, semi-NSFW epic for "Paparazzi" gives us even more of the next-level cuckoo we’ve come to expect from the girl born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. (At one point in the clip, she even dons the very same metal cyborg leotard from George Michael’s “Too Funky” video!)
The Jonas Akerlund-directed opus, currently being streamed on a GaGa fansite, doesn’t get to the song (which, admittedly, is pretty damn catchy) until the 2:27 mark. What begins with our Lady rolling around with her handsome fellow (True Blood‘s Alexander Skarsgård) in a luxurious mansion (while speaking Italian? German? Help!) leads to him throwing her off the balcony. You know, your basic boy-girl shenanigans.
Cue song, and a dance sequence with a severely injured GaGa in a neck brace, wheel chair (with jazz hands!), and crutches. Apparently for GaGa, crippled is the new couture. But the madness doesn’t end there. Why, there’s still time for a montage of other dead fame-seekers (think Britney Spears’ "I’m so mad at the paparazzi! And Stephen Dorff!" vid for "Everytime" but way more dramatic) and a hot-and-heavy session on a couch with the Swedish triplets from Daisy of Love.
We won’t ruin the rest until you’ve seen it, but what do you think Music Mixers? Does La GaGa get points for executing such a high-concept project, or is it too tasteless for you? Should she make "Paparazzi" her next single? Did you just re-watch it for the tenth time, too?
UPDATE: Apparently, Gaga is none too happy that the clip — officially slated to premiere in the U.K. next Thursday — has made its way to numerous gossip and fan sites. To quote from her Twitter: "Stop leaking my mother—-ing videos."

Tone Loc collapses at concert
The Associated Press is reporting that ’80s star Tone Loc collapsed this morning during an outdoor concert at Florida’s Pensacola Beach. The "Funky Cold Medina" rapper reportedly had a seizure due to overheating. We’ll update with further details as they emerge.
AFTERNOON UPDATE: The AP now reports that Tone Loc has been released from the hospital after being treated. His manager blamed flight delays and heat for the rapper’s collapse.
Current listening: Dave Matthews
We’ve got a fair idea what fans of the Dave Matthews Band are going to be listening to next week. That would be the new DMB album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, which is released on Tuesday. But what is on Mr Matthews iPod? We have him a call to find out.
“A friend of mine, Danny Barnes, is recording an album and I’m obsessed with him. He’s a banjo player and he has a great record called Dirt on an Angel that’s already available. But this new one is absolutely amazing. Also, I’ve been listening to a lot of Pete Seeger because his birthday came up and at the beginning I was just looking for a song to sing at his birthday party [the legendary protest singer's 90th "birthday party" was actually a star-studded Madison Square Garden concert which took place earlier this month.] And he’s recorded once or twice! There’s just endless recordings of him. So I’ve been enjoying going through some of his history. A lot of banjo in my life lately! If someone told me 20 years ago that I was going to be listening to a lot of banjo when I was 42 I would not have been able to get my head around it. The other thing I’ve been listening to a lot is that Bela Fleck and Chick Corea album [2007’s The Enchantment], which is also amazing. But it’s also banjo! What’s going on? Maybe this happens to everyone when they get older and no one talks about it.”
