What 'grown-up' songs do your kids love?

My brother’s youngest son, Magnus, who is like a towheaded four-year-old version of Owen Meany (read: adorable and precocious and unintentionally hilarious), marched into the Read the full post.

I’m 22, but when I was younger I would listen to Tom Petty, Bob Seger, Eric Clapton, and more importantly, the Beatles. I absolutely love The Who. That generation of music was amazing and I really wished I grew up in that time period.
I have gotten my neighbor’s kids into MIA, though. Which is awesome to hear my 5 year old neighbor sing “bonafide hustler makin my name”

My four year old boy LOVES “Before He Cheats”

My 7 year old son loves “Sabatoge” by the Beastie Boys. It was in the new Star Trek movie so I downloaded it for him (the edited version). He also likes the new Linkin Park song from the upcoming Transformers movie. He also likes the iCarly theme song so what can I say?

My 7 1/2 year old niece and 5 year old nephew looooove – “Baby Got Back” – Sir MixALot, “Glamorous” by Fergie (“If you aint got no money take your broke butt home”) and “Baby Brother” by the White Stripes.

My 2 1/2 girl LOVES Know Your Enemy by Green Day—”play the drum song, mommy!!!”
Then she rocks out to the WHOLE song!

My 3 year old goddaughter runs around the house singing Nirvana’s “In Bloom”. She calls it “He’s the One”… mind you What makes it even funnier is she is an african-american child. Gotta love children….

My brother’s kids rock out to pretty much anything by Bon Jovi because my brother plays it so often (well, we are in Jersey…) But the funniest one to me is the son of a family friend who knew all the words to the Black Crowe’s Hard to Handle at 3 and half. It was pretty cute.

I am 26, but when I was little I can disticntly remember listening to all the classics like the eagles and james taylor and lynard skynard and all this music that was all from at least ten years before I was born. All I would ever do was complain about how much I hated that music and I didn’t want to listen to it. Now my taste has improved with age and I love all those artists. My 13 year old cousins know all the words to just about all the U2 song book and can have adult conversations about them. My brother was given the soundtrack to RENT when he was 11. If you aren’t familiar with it, it is all about sex, drugs, aids, and things completely inappropriate for an 11 year old. There is an orgy song in it.

I’ve managed to wean my kids (7 y.o. twins and a six y.o. younger brother) off all “kids” music, and on to Rock and Roll. They’ve even developed their own playlist:
    “Vertigo” (previously mentioned)
“That’s Not My Name” (The Ting Tings)
    “Time Bomb” (Beck)
    “The Seeker” (The Who)
    “Wrong” (Depeche Mode)
    “Troublemaker” (Weezer)
In unrelated news, my mother-in-law hates me

I don’t have any kids(at them moment), but when I was little my absolute FAVORITE song was “Passionate Kisses” by Mary Chapin Carpenter. I still love that song, but I remember singing it at the top of my lungs as far as I can remember.

When my sister was probably three, “I’ll Be Your Shelter” by Taylor Dayne was on the radio all the time. My sister loved that song and every time we got in the car she would say, “Mommy, make it play ‘Shell Time’!”
Also, I used to work at a store where we gave makeovers to girls ages 3 to around 12, and we would always talk to them about stuff that they liked. When I would ask them what music they liked I normally got answers like Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers, but I remember a girl that was probably eight years old that told me her favorite bands were Skid Row and Poison. I thought that was hilarious.

My kids (3.5 and 2) current faves are Perfect Me by Deerhoof and A-Punk by Vampire Weekend.

I grew up listening to my cousins’ 8-tracks of Rod Stewart, Steve Miller Band, the Eagles, Elton John, Marshall Tucker Band. I remember asking them what “Spread you wings and let me come inside” meant from “Tonight’s the Night”! I was only about 10 years old!!

My daughter fell in love with “Cover of the Rolling Stone” by Dr. Hook when she was five. It was hillarious to hear her singing about freaky old ladies named cocaine Katie. She is about to turn 16 and still smiles when she hears that song.

My mom had audio of me singing (badly, some things never change) Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” and I knew that “Born to Add” on Sesame Street was copying “Born to Run.” And I remember dancing to “I’m So Excited” by the Pointer Sisters (on Vinyl no less), and my sister and I nearly wearing out a tape of Billie Jean and Footloose.
