'So You Think You Can Dance' top-12 stomp to the White Stripes 'Seven Nation Army'; What's next?

Of all the action on last night's So You Think You Can Dance results show (we blogged it here), including the inevitable two eliminations and a performance by David Guetta and Kelly Rowland (oh, look, we've blogged them too!), the best may have been the top-12's military-tight routine to the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army." Watch below (and please ignore Nigel's scronch face on freeze-frame):

Aside from proving that the song's electrifying guitar line is one of the most redonkulously danceable riffs ever, it reminds me that one of the things I love about this show is that they use songs as performed by their original artists; the in-house Muzak versions they use on Dancing With the Stars feel both weird and oddly chintzy, like listening to a sad lounge singer at the Radisson.

But you tell us, Music Mixers, what have your favorite pairings of song and dance been on SYTYCD? What current or recent hits would you like to see the remaining top 10 contestants take on?

I was delighted to hear “Seven Nation Army” last night and I thought the choreography (and the red and black costumes!) were great. I’d love to see some choreography set to Ra Ra Riot or Neko Case. I don’t exactly know what that would look like, but that’s why I’m not a choreographer! (I think Mia could do great things with either of those artists.)

my favorite pairings of song and dance were a couple of seasons ago with the jazz routine to “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurythmics and last year’s jazz routine to “The Garden” by Mirah. I love finding new songs I’ve never heard of or rediscovering old songs during these routines.

I always remember “Ramalama (Bang Bang)” from Season 2 – it was just an amazing group number and an amazing song. Also, any songs that Mia Michaels uses tend to be great. She has amazing musicality and her routines always display that.

LOVED the Ivan and Allison contemporary dance to “Why” by Annie Lennox (Season 2). I believe it’s the only dance on the show ever to nearly move me to tears.

I loved when Mark and Chelsie danced to “Beautiful” by Michelle Ndegeochello (the one by Mia Michaels when she wore a wedding dress. I have always loved that song and thought I was the only one. It’s great to know that Mia loves it too!

Leah, your comment: “one of the things I love about this show is that they use songs as performed by their original artists; the in-house Muzak versions they use on Dancing With the Stars feel both weird and oddly chintzy, like listening to a sad lounge singer at the Radisson.”
To which I say, AMEN, SISTAH…AMEN. It’s the main reason why I don’t watch DWTS. I can’t stand the cover band, no matter how talented they are.

AMEN, Leah. One of the best things on this show is hearing the original track and the way the choreographers bring us another dimension with dance.
I just hate the cover band on DWTS. Main reason why I don’t watch.

I loved that they used Seven Nation Army. I always thought that was a good dance song. And I still fondly remember Ramalama (Bang Bang) from a while back, and still love that song. And a dance to Ra Ra Riot, (in particular Ghost Under Rocks or Can You Tell) would be liquid awesome.

I would love to see a dance routine to Anja Garbarek’s “Dizzy With Wonder” or a Bill Nelson piece like “Skull Baby Cluster”, “Wow! It’s Scootercar Sexkitten” or “Big Noise In Twangtown”. I liked the Roisin Murphy song used in the last episode.

This is weird and random but I would love to see a contemporary piece set to either “The Freshman” by the Verve Pipe or Ben Folds Five’s “Brick.” On to more friendly subjects…I think you could do an awesome samba to Wale’s “Roof (DJ Ayers Mix)” and cool jazz pieces to Passion Pit’s “Sleepyhead,” Patrick Wolf’s “Who Will (Buffetlibre Mix)” and Empire of the Sun’s “Walking on a Dream (Kids at the Bar Remix).”
They’ve done a great job with music on this show. I now love “No Air” simple because of the dance associated with it and in the past couple weeks I’ve bought “Hot Like Wow” and “Windowdipper” from Ade’s solo. I think Sara Bareilles’ “Gravity” is next to go in my shopping cart.

hands down season 2′s top 6 group routine by mia michaels to imogen heap’s “hide and seek” & season 4′s top 8 group routine by dave scott to common’s “universal mind control”
you could tell that the dancers felt the movement with both of those pieces. so good. i would love a contemporary to go with something by ray lamontagne or justin nozuka. a hip-hop to something by drake would be amazingggg

and also lacey and kameron’s contemporary to elisa’s “dancing”=PERFECTION.

  • Keri

What song do they play when the clip is shown for the girl who’s voted off that week?
