Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein is trying to become a Phish fan. Any chance she'll succeed?

As someone who recently stood in a Tennessee field, staring at four men on a stage and attempting to discern why everyone around me was flailing their limbs so joyously to the not-unpleasant-but-not-like-mindblowing sounds emitting from said stage, I have a great deal of empathy for former Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein as she attempts to become a fan of Phish.

Carrie’s been documenting the journey on her very intelligent blog for NPR; her latest post includes a video of her trip to the used CD store, where she hocked old records and bought Phish albums with the proceeds.

Buying My First Ever Phish CDs from Carrie Brownstein on Vimeo.

I applaud Ms. Brownstein for being stronger than me, and for pursuing her quest in such an aggressive fashion. I am also insanely curious about what CDs she sold, and if she is regretting the decision yet. But what about you, Music Mixers? Would any of you ever begin a full-immersion Phish education program? For you Phish-heads out there, what albums or live bootlegs would you recommend for those willing to join Carrie in her quest? And would anyone care to take up the “Sleater-Kinney was and is a better band than Phish” argument, just for kicks?

I feel bad for people who have decided before they know a band to judge them…just sayin…

In 1997 I went to a show in Toronto and I was a virgin never even heard of the band. (nothing not even a lick) But what happened changed by bias with any music I left my self open and have never seen or been in an environment like that show. Truly these guys are a touring band and you need to see one before u judge (

You have to listen NYE 1995 at the Garden. Considered one of the best concerts of the 90’s of any band.

I’m not surprised you feel that way.
Phish fans are responsible for the bands success and shortcomings.
Loyal fans brought them concert success but once Jerry Garcia died the Deadheads came on board and ruined a good scene.
If you saw Phish live in a small venue in 1993 they WOULD have blown your mind.

“Deadheads came on board and ruined a good scene.” What are you talking about? The Grateful Dead, mainly Jerry, soul handedly created the band Phish, when they started out playing GD covers. And the scene is far from ruined.

Go and buy Billy Breates right now. There is not a song over 6 minutes and many under 4. The album is produced by Steve Lillywhite and while it retains the typical “phishy” sound, it trancends into a brilliant album that is cohesive and full of melody, harmony and a great sense of musical tension and release. The best way to describe it is that in each song, the note following the note before is the perfect note to be played.

Phead- Phish was based more on original, compositional pieces than GD covers. As Trey even said in “Bittersweet Motel” they are influinced by bands like Boston, Talking Heads and Led Zepplin as much a GD. Although the fans are similar, I think Phish is about as close to GD as The Beatles are to Rolling Stones.

It’s nice to see someone seek to understand before judging. I know so many folks- that I have nearly identical musical tastes to by and large- who want give Phish the time of day because of whatever preconceptions they have. Indie rockers- should dig Phish. They are the most enduring- and successful alternative rock band of their time.

I suggest a listen to the Island Tour (4/2/08 – 4-5-08) as great intro to Phish. This run features some excellent playing including great examples of the band’s improvisations, humor, and attention do detail.
