'New Moon' soundtrack: Will Thom Yorke and Kings of Leon contribute? And who else should?

Yorke-Twilight_l Speculation about who will appear on the New Moon soundtrack heated up this week after director Chris Weitz dropped a few big names to a RottenTomatoes.com interviewer: “The criterion will still always be what’s right for the movie at that given moment, but Thom Yorke is interested; we might, if we’re very lucky, get Kings of Leon to do something.” Well, well!

But don’t get too excited just yet. Yorke’s camp would neither confirm nor deny the Radiohead frontman’s reported involvement to EW at this time. The Kings of Leon connection, meanwhile, seems even more tenuous. “Not as of right now, no,” KoL lead singer Caleb Followill tells EW’s Whitney Pastorek when asked if his band will contribute to the Twilight sequel. “I haven’t had any time to write any music, we’ve been so busy… I would have to write a song in my hotel room, which I think we might could do, but I don’t know. As of right now I’m more focused on getting some rest and writing another album.”

Oh well. For now, at least, sounds like the New Moon soundtrack field is still very much wide open. It’d be a choice gig for any up-and-comer, considering how successful the first Twilight film’s soundtrack was. So whose tunes would you like to hear in the next teen-vampire flick this fall? Sink your fangs into some suggestions in the comments below.

Kelly Clarkson has a song called “Empty As I Am” that she wrote for New Moon…not sure if she’ll be on there but that’d be awesome

  • Ryan

There’s always Muse and Collective Soul again. Stephenie Meyer obviously likes them. CS’s “Not the One” definitely fits the tone of New Moon.

  • Christina

Florence + The Machine, the song Cosmic Love would be perfect for new moon

I would be SHOCKED if Kings of Leon licensed a song on the NEW MOON soundtrack. For starters, the last Soundtrack was on Atlantic/Chop Shop, and though an incredibly steady seller, its not on Sony/BMG, which the Kings are signed to. Their record label have finally just broke the Kings at Pop radio with their hit “Use Somebody”, and I assume once that song becomes absolutely ginormous, the record label will follow up with the current Modern rock hit, “Notion”. NOT a new track for a soundtrack for another record label, which would then not only make money from the sales, but also be responsible for marketing said new tune. GET REAL. It took them forever to break the Kings to mainstream success here in the U.S., so I seriously don’t see them screwing up their marketing plan now, NEW MOON, or not.

Thom would never sell his soul for this franchise.

  • Meg

    One Republic’s “Come Home”

There is a group called Julien-K (you can find them in Google, Amazon, iTunes, etc).
They have a song called “Forever”, I can’t think of any song more fitting for Blue Moon!

    • catlin

ah Julien-K! i saw them open for LP @ Projekt Revolution and met the keyboardist. Their music was okay. Also the movie is called New Moon.

  • Al

Blue Moon!?!?! lol, thinkig about something else. It’s New Moon!

  • Jamie

Matt- Not sure if you have even seen the Twilight movie but the last song featured is 15 Step BY RADIOHEAD! I am a big Radiohead fan & was surprised to hear it used in the first film. Seems as if his soul has already been sold.

Ben Harper – Walk Away, Forever. Beautiful, beautiful songs with amazing lyrics that DEFINITELY fit the book.

  • Jake

Florence + The Machine’s “Howl” would be even better. It’s a song about werewolves, what could be more fitting?

  • ava

It’s an older song and I’m not sure where it would fit into the story line in terms of the movie, but the song “More than Love” by Los Lonely Boys reminds me of Bella/Edward relationship or even the Jacob/Bella relationship down the road. It’s all about losing someone and realizing that what you have is more than an ordinary love and hoping that the other person feels that way too. Beautiful song.

    Pearl Jam, Come Back

  • Meg

World Spins Madly On – The Weepies
He Lays In The Reins – Calexico & Iron & Wine
    Maybe Not – Cat Power

  • Snarf

Waiting for the Night – Depeche Mode

  • chris

memories by within temptation–the song’s absolutely perfect for how bella’s memories of edward continue on with her. or something like my immortal or taking over me by evanescence (songs about how memories of edward have basically taken over her life. they really express the pain she’s in throughout the book and evanescence is even on the new moon playlist.)

  • Jen

“Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon has got to be on there…they also need to use some Evanescence & Laura Marling tunes….if you wanted to cheese it up a little, you could also add “If I was the One” by Ruff Endz, but I don’t know if the R&B feel to that song fits the tone of the movie…

  • Kalie

Didn’t the director already confirm that there will be Muse, Radiohead and Band of Skulls songs on the soundtrack? Sounds good to me. I think Blue October and Coldplay would be perfect for the soundtrack. There are so many great songs that are appropriate for the story being told in NM. The soundtrack should have a couple of well known bands on it and the rest of the songs should be by up and coming alternative bands.

  • T

Kelly Clarkson has admitted to being a huge fan of the Twilight series – and has even written a song about it, so I hear – so it would be awesome to see her on the soundtrack. Ah yes, Corey mentioned it – “Empty As I Am”… what I’d give to hear a KC-written song and that wonderfully talented voice of hers on the soundtrack!

  • Yoga_Girl

Amos Lee has great romantic complex songs…

  • Amy

Coldplay-Fix You HAS TO BE! Bella Running to Edward in slow motion with the instrumental from that song playing would be perfection.

  • Jean Genie

Bite Hard or Dream Again by Franz Ferdinand

  • Liz

The first soundtrack was amazing! I want to see more lesser known bands for hte next. I love love love the Twilight soundtrack and I don’t even like Twilight. I rave about the soundtrack to friends! We went roadtripping last month and my contribution to the CD list was the Twilight soundtrack. Loved it.

  • meggy

    secondhand serenade!

  • Heather

Kings of Leon is one of the cast’s favorite bands, so I know they are campaigning hard for them to be on the soundtrack, and they already have a song about vampires. Radiohead, yes. “Need” by Hana Pestle, yes!!
No pop music, please. The first soundtrack was all rock and indie music. Please stay with this theme.

  • TinaDlandrum

I would have to say Company of Thieves.. Song:(Old Letters).. That song would go soooo well with the sequel…

  • ashley

Yeah Yeah Yeahs…..especially after their recent albumn “It’s Blitz!”. They definitely could make it onto the NM soundtrack.

  • TinaDlandrum

oh!!!! also Kings of Leon: Closer or Cold Desert

  • Ashley

I think that they should have a Muse song on the album. I think Radiohead, Coldplay, Paramore, Death Cab for Cutie and Linkin Park should at least. For me personally, I would love ‘I Will Follow You Into the Dark’ by Death Cab. =)
