Mike Posner: The next white mixtape star?

Fresh-faced suburban white kid loves hip-hop, goes off to higher ed and makes mixtapes on the side, lands major-label record deal before graduation. The Asher Roth Story? Au contraire!

Well, actually, it is the “I Love College” rapper’s tale, in a nutshell, but it’s Mike Posner’s, too. The 21-year-old Southfield, Michigan, native is about to start his senior at Duke University, where he majors in business and sociology and possibly beer pong (yep, he’s a frat boy); he’s also got a newly-minted contract with J Records, collaborations with Kid Cudi, Kanye protege Big Sean, and Wale under his Abercrombie belt, and an official debut due in 2010– as well as another mixtape to follow his first, this spring’s A Matter of Time.

Vocally, he also sounds a little bit like Macy Gray and Jason Mraz had a baby. But that is neither here nor there! Judge Posner’s lyrical skills for yourself below:

What’s your call, Music Mixers — Great White Hope, or gone in a minute? He’s  up to nearly three million plays on his MySpace and touring through nationally through late October, so clearly, somebody’s listening…

'Glee' soundtrack announced: See it here!

Fox and Columbia Records announced plans today to release a soundtrack to my favorite new show of the fall, Glee, with quite an eclectic track listing.

  1. “Don’t Stop Believin’”
  2. “Can’t Fight This Feeling”
  3. “Gold Digger”
  4. “Take a Bow”
  5. “Bust Your Windows”
  6. “Taking Chances”
  7. “Alone”
  8. “Maybe This Time”
  9. “Somebody to Love”
  10. “Hate On Me”
  11. “No Air”
  12. “You Keep Me Hangin’ On”
  13. “Keep Holding On”
  14. “Bust a Move”
  15. “Sweet Caroline”
  16. “Dancing with Myself”
  17. “Defying Gravity”

Being a Glee fanatic—and lucky enough to have visited the set twice so far—I have some info on a few of the tracks you might be wondering about.

“Gold Digger” appears in the series premiere, airing Sept. 9 at 9pm, with Will (Matthew Morrison) taking lead vocals during a glee club rehearsal. While it sounds like it could be a hot mess, the whole performance is actually quite charming. Rachel (Lea Michele) performs Rihanna’s “Take a Bow” as the capper to the same episode. Fantastic. Rachel also tackles “No Air,” a duet between her and Finn (Cory Montieth), as well as Wicked‘s “Defying Gravity,” with Kurt (Chris Colfer).  “Bust Your Windows” was already released on Hulu and is a Mercedes (Amber Riley) showstopper. Mercedes handles the cover of Jill Scott’s “Hate on Me,” a number I saw performed live and it is AH-MAZING. “Keep Holding On” is a big group number pegged to a twist involving cheerleader Quinn (Dianna Argon). And I believe “Bust a Move” is another Will number.

What do you think of these song selections, Music Mix-ers? Will you buy the Glee soundtrack? And how excited for the September 9th premiere are you?

Chris Brown: 'I still love Rihanna.' But do you want to hear it?

Today, People.com leaks tidbits from its upcoming interview with beleaguered R&B star Chris Brown, who recently plead guilty to felony assault for the February beating of his then-girlfriend Rihanna (he received five years probation and 180 days of community labor).

Among other things, he says of his ex-paramour, whom he has been forbidden to have contact with or go within 100 yards of for the next five years, “I never fell out of love with her. That just wouldn’t go away.” Of the immediate aftermath of the assault, he recalls, “I was distraught … I went to my mom on the same night and told [her] what happened and broke down.”

He also insists that he is not like his stepfather, a man he has said in the past was physically violent towards his mother: “I feel like he enjoyed it. He was an abuser. It was continuous.”

Readers, what are you making of Brown’s claims, and his current apology tour, which continues with a much-touted appearance on Larry King this Wednesday? Does it matter that Rihanna herself reportedly objected to the restraining order? Does her implied forgiveness alter your feelings towards him (when contacted by EW, her personal rep had no comment), and will it have any effect on whether you’ll buy his music again in the future?

Michael McDonald joins Grizzly Bear in Doobie Brotherhood on new single

Two Grizzly Bear posts in one day? Oh, but Music Mixers, this is, inDoobie-tibly worth it. When not busy entertaining hip-hop’s royal couple, the Brooklyn indie animals are collaborating with another kind of royalty: Michael McDonald.

The B-side of the single “While You Wait for the Others” from May’s Veckatimest, features vocals on the same track as interpreted by the one and only blue-eyed beard-soul legend. For 99 cents, all this can be yours today on iTunes; or on vinyl if you can “bear” the wait (see what we did there? HILARITY!). In the meantime, watch the band performing the song, McDonald-less, on England’s Later with Jools Holland in May, below:

Jay-Z, Beyonce attend Grizzly Bear concert

Grizzly Bear‘s great year got even cooler last night, when Jay-Z and Beyonce showed up at the indie rockers’ free outdoor concert at New York City’s East River State Park. While I was too busy enjoying the show to notice music’s royal couple standing a few yards away at the time (or to read about it on Twitter), an enterprising attendee captured the moment with a fuzzy camera-phone snap that promptly made the rounds of every music blog ever.

Who turned Jay and B on to the Griz? Could have been Kanye West, or Beyonce’s sister Solange (who was reportedly also on the scene yesterday). Or maybe they were just there to rep Brooklyn. Regardless, as a huge fan of Grizzly Bear, Jay-Z, and Beyonce, I could not be more excited about this convergence. Can the Internet will a Jay-Z song featuring Ed Droste on the hook into existence — or, ooh, a Beyonce-Daniel Rossen duet — or a mixtape track where Jay spits over “Two Weeks”? Hey, stranger things have happened.

Oh, and the show? Fantastic, per usual. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Grizzly Bear rock so loud and hard. Openers Beach House were entrancing, too, playing lots of new material that boded well for their next album. Were any of you at the Williamsburg waterfront show last night? What do you make of Jay-Z and Beyonce’s cameo in the crowd?

UPDATE: Brooklyn Vegan has more pics, plus a short video clip of Jay-Z swaying to “Ready, Able.” Be still my heart!

Guilty Pleasures, Round Two: Follow all the matchups here!

round two bracket

Above, please find the official bracket for EW.com’s Music Mix Search for the Greatest Guilty Pleasure Act of All Time Tournament Poll Challenge Thing, now updated for Round Two, which will commence here shortly. We certainly hope your favorite advanced to the Sweet 16. Feeling disappointed? You have only yourself to blame. Over 9,000 Backstreet Boys fans voted to keep their lads in the competition — do you have what it takes to withstand that sort of devotion? Better get it soon, Meat Loaf lovers.

Careful readers will also notice that the bracket has been rearranged somewhat from the previous round. That is because the Game Commissioner didn’t properly do her research before setting up the initial chart, and had the seeds in the wrong order. Holler about it if you want, but bear in mind that first round results were in no way affected by the changes unless for some reason you were voting in other faceoffs, attempting to hand-pick your band’s upcoming opponents. (*cough*Phish fans*cough*) Anyway, it’s fixed now, and we’re back on the road to our thunderdome of epically cheesy proportions. Check out the matchups, print out the bracket so you can play at home, tweeter your friends to get on board, leave your comments after the beep. And please: no wagering.

Round Two
Britney Spears (1) vs. Lady Gaga (9)
Phish (16) vs. Mariah Carey (9)
Meat Loaf (5) vs. Backstreet Boys (4)
Celine Dion (5) vs. Ace of Base (4)
Hall & Oates (6) vs. Journey (3)
George Michael/Wham (6) vs. Spice Girls (3)
Styx (7) vs. ABBA (2)

'I'm on a Boat' redux: The Lonely Island, U.S. Navy style

The Lonely Island’s Incredibad is truly the gift that keeps giving. Lo, six months since the album’s release, I still sing a verse from “Boombox” or “Dreamgirl” every now and again when I need a little LOL. Evidently I’m not the only one: Check out this viral clip of the Saturday Night Live comedy troupe’s classic “I’m on a Boat,” as interpreted by a group of actual U.S. Navy sailors, below (some NSFW language).

This might be even better than the college a cappella “I’m on a Boat” that I loved a couple months ago. I mean, the production values on this thing are through the roof. Just look at that nautical-themed pashmina afghan! So real. Also, this video appears to have been shot on the deck of the U.S.S. John Paul Jones. Maybe it’s just me, but something about performing this song on a real-life guided missile destroyer just takes it to another level. Wouldn’t you say?

Soundgarden's 'Jesus Christ Pose'... as a gospel song? Only on EW.com!

Although it’s easy to assume Seattle’s music history started with grunge, the truth is — like most things — far deeper. In the late ’60s and early ’70s, in fact, Seattle was home to one of the country’s most vibrant funk and soul scenes, an extension of the community that birthed Jimi Hendrix and Quincy Jones, and gave Ray Charles an early home.

In 2004, Light in the Attic released Wheedle’s Groove: Seattle’s Finest in Funk & Soul 1965-1975, a compilation of the best from the mostly-forgotten artists of that time. A live reunion show to celebrate that release has inspired a film and a followup project, featuring new tracks by the original artists recorded by the man known as “the George Martin of the Northwest Sound,” 80 year old Kearney Barton. The album is named for him, too.

Kearney Barton is full of must-hear stuff, but none more so than the cover that bridges the gap between Seattle’s two histories: Pastor Pat Wright (formerly known as Patrinell Staten) and her Total Experience Gospel Choir, covering Soundgarden’s “Jesus Christ Pose.” It’s streaming below for one week only as a glorious example of the power of interpretation. As a grunge lifer who never imagined this song without Chris Cornell’s hairy, strafing wail, I personally think this is pretty cool. Give a listen, and let us know what you think in the comments.

[Due to the magic of publishing rights issues, this mp3 no longer exists on this site. Hopefully, you can find it elsewhere. Or buy the record!]

Ghostface Killah: Off to see the 'Wizard'

So Ghostface Killah has a new album coming out at the end of September called Ghostdini: Wizard of Poetry, and the cover for it is my new favorite cover maybe ever…

Ghostface-killah-wizard_l

Ghostface told New York Magazine in July that he “wanted to base [this album] around The Wizard of Oz. I was passing the chuckle patches and all that stuff like that, doing everything till I got to the Emerald City, and meeting the person that was like God, you know what I mean?… I couldn’t take the same likeness of that movie and put it on my album ’cause then it’s gonna cause a problem. But I still kept the Wizard of Poetry and Emerald City.” And talk about good timing: This week was the 70th anniversary of the debut of The Wizard of Oz.
