MTV announced the nominees for the VMAs today and it looks to be a duel of the divas between Beyonce and Lady Gaga, with a whopping 9 nominations each. Beyonce is, of course, nominated for her now-iconic video for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” while Gaga’s nominations are split between “Poker Face” and “Paparazzi” (my personal favorite for many reasons, not the least of which is the cameo by True Blood‘s Alexander Skarsgard). I was lucky enough to vote for the VMAs this year and these ladies were definitely two of my faves in most of the categories. But the real question now is who will emerge victorious between the two enormously talented gals? It’s an incredibly hard decision as both made AH-MAZING contributions to the music video world this year. I sort of have to give the edge to Gaga since she’s the newest superstar on the block and has continued to outdo herself with each video, especially the epic “Paparazzi.”
Who do you think will walk away with the most moonmen, Music Mix-ers? Which star had the better music video?

Beyonce all the way
I hope Britney wins. “Womanizer” was better than both of their vids!
Why aren’t we mentioning Britney?! She had seven noms and she is wayy better than Beyonce and Gaga. Womanzier all the way!
You have a good argument right there. Britney Spears’ Womanizer was just as popular before Beyonce and Lady Gaga’s videos came out. That was a very good video with the numerous costume changes she made in it! So she could challenge Beyonce or Lady Gaga in any of those video awards nominations. She’s just as competitive with her own video.
How about Britney? Beyonce and Lady Gaga may win a few. But having the same amount means someone is going to lose. Britney has seven. And Womanizer and Circus are one of her best video’s. Better than “Piece of Me” which she won for last year. So I don’t care about Beyonce and Lady Gaga… I am curious what happens with Britney!
I hope Beyonce wins. Single Ladies was indeed iconic.
however, the VMA’s don’t reward quality videos nowadays. Single Ladies is an exception to the rule.
Paparazzi is a good video, but it took a heavy weight like Jonas Akerlund, to finally make sense of that tacky no-talent GagGag.
If she wins it’ll probably be for the worst video, Pokerface, because MTV doesn’t care about quality…just what’s hot at the moment. Anyways, they need a new tacky desperate star a la Britney, and Gagtard would fit the bill nicely.
lady gaga gonna poke everyone’s face especially Beyonce’s…lolz
The VMAs hasn’t been relevant since 2003. But at least Green Day & Muse are playing in it.
Yeah, but what (if anything) does that say about Muse and Green Day?
Britney was nominated for 7 and what a surprise EW doesn’t mention it. I feel she is a top contender for both pop video and for video of the year as Womanizer is an entertaining video. Plus, the VMA’s usually suck when Brit Brit is missing.
I think that because both Beyonce and Lady GaGa are both tied with 9 nominations and each made well received videos, they wanted to focus on those two. The writer seemed more focused on those two in the article than Britney Spears, though I’m sure he’s respective of Britney’s videos as well.
Britney Spears’ Womanzier is a far bettter video IMO and should win.
While Lady GaGa’s videos are impressive for how delightfully bonkers (and strangely hot) they are, it’s gotta be Beyonce.
The article stated this itself. “Single Ladies” IS iconic. Out of Beyonce and Lady GaGa only one of them had a video that infiltrated the zeitgist for a while, inspiring babies, fat guys and other artists to spoof it/pay homage. Beyonce, FTW!
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Seriously, Britney better win video of the year for “Womanizer”. The video is so much better than both Gaga and Beyonce and I hate to be the one to say this (because Beyonce does have a beautiful voice) but Single Ladies stinks. I don’t get it she already has a ring on it so what the hell is she singing about!!! Please for the sake of MTV Britney is back, on top and has the best video. Lady Gaga is just Christina Aguliera with a worse voice.
First of all I want to address dvnovert’s comment about it taking Jonas Akerlund to make sense of Lady Gaga. You need to be reminded that without a great video director Britney or anyone else, would not be where she is today and she certainly wouldn’t look as good as she does in her videos without the clever editing. For all you Britney fans, you’re just hating on Lady Gaga because you know she is taking Britney’s place. Lady Gaga is younger, writes her own music, and is a million times more talented than Britney. Face it people, Britney is so 2000 and Lady Gaga is the future. As for Beyonce, no doubt she is very talented and “Single Ladies” is a great song but the video is plain and boring! Yes the dance was great and the spoofs even better but the video is just lame. Lady Gaga’s video’s are creative, unique and definitely not boring. Though you may hate her, the fact is Lady Gaga is a talented artist who’s here to stay and the fact that you’re talking about her means that she’s doing what she’s supposed to!
Tim, the fact that you even said Gaga has “made AH-MAZING contributions to the music video world this year” means your opinion is dead to me. Seriously, how can any REAL music lover take that woman seriously?
@Lily, Britney fans aren’t thinking about Gaga. If anything, Beyonce is more in Britney’s league: i.e established intertnational superstar. In Britney’s case, megastar. Gaga’s had a great year. She deserves credit, but I enjoed watching “Womanizer” so much more. It was eye candy!
