Trey Anastasio has been pretty busy lately, what with the whole reuniting-Phish thing. That doesn’t mean he can’t still make a little time here and there for the right side project — like playing lead guitar on “You Want to Stay High,” a song by Rich Pagano + the sugarCane cups.
Anastasio is just one of the stars recruited by Pagano, best known as the drummer for Beatles cover band the Fab Faux, for his new project’s self-titled debut. Others who contributed to the album, due next month, include Mott the Hoople’s Ian Hunter and New York Dolls’ David Johansen. But with Phish back on fans’ minds this summer, the Anastasio collab is definitely the buzziest.
Right now, the Music Mix is the only place where you can hear the classic-rock groove that Anastasio and Pagano cooked up together. So give “You Want to Stay High” a free listen below, then let us know: How do you like those electric licks?

I like the blues feel to it. Trey is a phenomonal guitar player who has yet to attract the phan base he deserves.
“yet to attract the phan base he deserves”
uhh… dude: ever been to a phish show? his phan base is purty darn thick… arguably the biggest guitar-geek fans in the industry. ever.
As long as he stays clean and sober, Trey is one of the best guitarists of this generation, if not all time.
Big phish fan here… IMO this song kinda sucks (song writing wise), and Trey’s tone is butt… I don’t think it’s his fault – the mix sucks. What is with all the crappy overdubbed guitars at the end? And the loads of reverb? Bet Trey isn’t happen with this…
I like it a lot!
Terrible song. Trey, please stay home and rest.
I like it. Definitely a nice tone change for Trey!
First off – the first guitar solo that has the weird tone is not Trey
Trey’s solo starts when the “overdubbing at the end” starts. It’s not really a solo – it is him trading licks/overdubbing w/ another guitarist(s). I think it works because it doesn’t sound like Trey was cut and pasted onto the track. Like – “Enter Trey here…” It’s more of a collaborative style which I think works with the OK song. Trey is also playing small parts throughout the song.
Trey is one of the best guitar players ever!! Just behind the
2 Jimmy’s (Page and Hendrix) and on the level with Clapton and Vaughn.
agreed ^^^ completely that this “collab” doesnt due Trey’s Jedi abilities justice. I love both Pagano and Trey and hope Big red continues to explore these sit-ins. Trey really is our generation’s guitar great.
I love it. Glad Trey is not a one note.
Great song! Love the guitars and Pagano’s vocal. Wonder if there are any other Fab Faux musicians on this?
Website says that Ian Hunter is also on the cd.
Love it! Great vocals and love Trey’s tone on the song – looking forward to hearing the rest of the CD..
this is an excellent track. Pagano’s vocals are always great, he’s got his own unique sound. love the break towards the end. it’s always enjoyable to hear Trey step outside of pure jam mode and bring his style to a more structured pop/rock song.
all members of the Fab Faux play on the album… really looking forward to its release!
The Beatles, in yet another display of brillance from the best pop band of all time, were smart enough to sign Badfinger (an incredible pop band themselves), then known as The Iveys, as the first band (other than The Beatles themselves) unanimously signed to The Apple label. THIS SONG SOUNDS JUST LIKE BADFINGER (that’s a good thing) – it has a late sixties, early seventies pop/garage feel to it and isn’t over polished. Very well done!
Very catchy song! I think that it shows great versatility and talent for an artist to step outside of what they normaly do for another approach to self expression. Great song. Great playing/singing.
