Fans of winsome folkie Regina Spektor may already know the song below; it’s been popping up in her live sets for years (where it’s often referred to as “The Meatball Song” or “‘A Lesson In How Fleeing Preservation Is”), but remains unrecorded — until now.
Now, the track has both an official name, “The Left Hand Song” (being that it was composed using, well, Spektor’s left hand), and an official release — on star violinist Joshua Bell’s upcoming Sept 29 album At Home With Friends (other “friends” on the disc include Sting, Josh Groban and Kristin Chenowith) Listen below:
What do you think, Music Mixers — how does it compare to the concert version you’re used to?

Beautiful. I love Regina.
Her name is spelled incorrectly in the headline.
no. its not.
Beautiful indeed!
My Girl!!! Very beautiful Song (and Regina too)! Thank you Joshua! You are the best, as always!
I have loved this song since I first heard it under its “concert name”—”a lesson….” but with Josh Bell’s violin on top of it, and recorded so stunningly well, it is the best version I have ever heard. I am looking forward to the whole Joshua Bell album, but this was, naturally, the track I most wanted to hear. Thanks.
(Now, if she could get someone to record “Ne me Quitte Pas” again and “Bobbin’ for Apples,” “Baby Jesus” and “Ink Stains” in a studio, the world would be a better place. (The “Eli, Eli,” and Leonard Cohen covers would be nice as well….)
Oh, yeah, one more thing. I think she calls it the Left Hand song not so much because she used that hand to compose it, as that she uses that hand to play it.
Joshua, you’re more than wonderful.
Can’t wait to get my copy of your new CD. 80-year old grandma loves music and you ARE MUSIC personified! You have so much fun with music. You give so much pleasure to all of us who can only listen. May God richly bless you, dear Joshua.
I have always always loved this song more than most others. The recorded version is breathtaking. She’s so gorgeous in everything she does. <3
This made my day. I haven’t a Regina fan for forever…so I’d never heard this song, but wow…it’s terrific!
Everything Regina touches is gold. This official version of an always great live song is absolutely beautiful. Is it just me or do the opening string notes sound like something from ‘Schindler’s List’. It’s haunting like that. Regina Spektor IS the fifth Beatle.
B..E..A..U..T..F..U..L! I love you Regina Spektor.
