The first PP&M concert I attended was in the late fall of 1962 at Lewis & Clark College in Protland, OR. At that moment they were a new phenomenon on the music scene, and their popularity with college kids can hardly be overstated. On the day of the concert the weather grew increasingly cold and wet as the day advanced. By early evening Portland was experiencing one of its occasional “silver thaws” — freezing rains. Lewis and Clark is at the summit of a steep hill and by an hour before concert time that hill had become almost impassible. But people left their cars on the side of the road, or in the ditch, and slipped and slid up the rest of the way on foot. The concert was oversold with many people sitting in the aisles (don’t ask about the fire code!). PP&M came on stage and blew us away. After 3 songs they also blew away the sound system! Without batting an eye they just ratcheted up their own natural volume and continued. It was the most memorable concert I ever attended.
How wonderful to see this clip. All young musicians should watch this and learn how effective it is just to stand still(ish) and sing.No crazy movements of theaterics.Of course to be able to do that…one must truely be able to sing…..
