More American Idol

Adam Lambert burns up the pre-sale album charts

Filed under: Let's Argue! and tagged: ,

Two, it seems, is Adam Lambert’s lucky number.

The guy-linered glam-ball’s second-place finish on American Idol somehow seemed more like a win than a loss (how many runners-up have you seen beat out the champ for the post-finale cover of Rolling Stone?), and now, sales for his still-untitled November 24 debut have soared to the no. 2 spot on Amazon — a move almost unprecedented for an album nearly two months out.

Even more impressively, Lambert’s label, RCA, hasn’t even publicized the pre-sale, meaning that the current rush is largely organic and fan-based.

What do you think, readers — will Adam’s first album match the triumphs of other non-winner winners like Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry, or exceed them?

Do promises of a “Queen-inspired sound” and contributions from Lady Gaga producer RedOne and hit-makers Ryan Tedder, Linda Perry and Dr. Luke (as per his Twitter) have you all hot under the bedazzled collar?

I’m a big fan. But that list of producers is bleh. My interest in him has plummeted faster than Paula Abdul’s career.

    • Lii

      Cool story, bro

    • ELoo

Crispy, recycling your comments now? I bet you think you’re too cool for school!

      Yeah Adam.

      • crispy

Busted. Wow, who knew this many people read both EW and Towle?

    • Milkyway

      So crispy,
Tell me you are no longer Adam’s fan now? without listening anything?

      • crispy

Just disappointed. I’ll still download his album. But I would have teamed him up with some interesting producers, not the person responsible for unleashing James Blunt on the world.

    • Jonesy

Lambert is also working with Sam Sparro and Ferras. I think the album is going to be great.

      • James

I’d pre-order it from Amazon but I am not paying an additional $7.99 for shipping to ensure I get it on the day of release. I’ll stick with iTunes (and besides I am hoping that my friend who works for 19 Entertainment will be able to get me a signed CD!!!)

    • Millie

Oh puhleeze. You’re not a fan, you’re a hater who trolls the internet looking for sites to spew your negativity. I’d suggest you come out of your mom’s basement every so often and get some sunshine.

      • Frankie

Millie, spot on. That is exactly what Crispy is and the saddest thing is that this pretending to be fans in order to make your negative comments sound genuine and considered is being encouraged on Kris’ sites since the news broke of how big Adam’s pre-orders are and how disappointing Kris’ are. Pathetic.

    • Trish

So without listening to the album, and because you don’t like the list of producers you have already decided you are no longer a fan? If that is so, well you were not much of one BEFORE. Just give the album a listen to, then decide on that, not from a list of producers. That in itself is idotic. Just saying……

As for me, I can’t wait till November 24th, and I have already pre-ordered my CD from Amazon. Woohoo!
      Rock on Adam, Rock on!

      • crispy

Do you not read? What you suggested is exactly what I said I’ll be doing. Again, I’m just disappointed in the choice of producers, who typically produce bland pop. I’m hoping Adam Lambert rises about that. Honestly, the obsessive 14-year-old fantards like you are the other reason my interest in him is waning.

      • Trish

How am I obessive? And noone can MAKE you less interested in an artist, ONLY you can do that. I am not a 14 year old fantard (that word is used way too often), but a mature 29 year old. I just know who I like. Don’t know how you get obessive out of that, but ok. And yes I did read what you wrote, you just said you would download it, so ok. Don’t get all personal on me, you should take a chill pill. Hell I am off today, I am bored and I like Adam, that makes me a fan who has nothing to do today but write on this post about everything and all things.

Take a chill pill Crispy and smooth out.

      • Preston

I look past producers/songwriters who handle the albums. These are what the singers chose to put on their albums. I think that Ryan Tedder, RedOne, Linda Perry and others for the new album, produce some good pop. One or two of their songs are bland, but they are little when compared to their more superior songs. I think that the singer goes for what they want for their album not by what the tastemakers and audience-testing groups want.

    • Mark

it’s not like your waning interest or lack of support will matter much anyway. There’s a reason he teamed up with pop producers… because he wants to sell records. Pop producers = popular music = $

if you were releasing an album, would you want it to sell? If you say anything else besides ‘yes’ you’re a bold faced liar and an idiot.

      • crispy

I think you might be even more cynical than I am.

      • Trish

Mark you are one cood dude. Love reading your comments.

    • Lisa

You do not sound like a fan.

    • toto

this is hilarious, he did not even make number 1. Wow, he does not have that many fans after all. “, sales for his still-untitled November 24 debut have soared to the no. 2 spot on Amazon”.
“meaning that the current rush is largely organic and fan-based.”

      • TT

First of all, now he is at #1. Second, when he WAS #2, it was following the already iconic Barbara Streisand. Not too shabby.

      • Matt

Well hell Toto, how else is one to sell an album but to a fan base? Who cares how organic it is. The all mighty dollar that the record producers see is how that matters to them. Not how many albums one fan bought.

      • terie

WRONG!!! Just came from Amazon site … ADAM IS in the NUMBER
ONE” SPOT!!! And it hasn’t even hit the stores YET!!! GO ADAM

      • Gretchen

Did you not read the part where his album is 2 MONTHS away from being released?? I would say #2 (or as it seems now, #1) is damn good for someone who was considered such a polarizing contestant. And who else would be buying his albums besides fans??

    • MrsGIMO

Adam is SO talented. He knows what he’s doing. He’ll be a super-star. Can’t get enough of this amazing artist!

    • emm

So what are you doing on this site anyway? If you’ve lost your interest on him LOG OFF…Gee!!! That’s simple.

    • Matt

One of my female co-workere just informed me that Adam is number one in sales over on Amazon. WOW!

    • Carole

Yeah, crispy, very convincing. I really believe you’re a fan.

Emm, don’t be fooled. This “I used to be a fan” or “I’m a disappointed fan” tactic is the latest ploy by Kris fans. It’s being suggested on his sites that they do this. They are either extremely naive or extremely dense if they think that non-fans don’t go on his sites and see their silly little games.

      • crispy

Wow, you are a loser. This pathetic 4th grade Lambert vs. Allen crap is exactly why I am not a fan. Who would want to be associated with the bleating sheep like you?

      • Stevie

        Sheep really bleat? Interesting.

      • terie

Better yet crispy … why would ADAM “want” a fan like You??

      • wm

Carole, I’m a Kris fan but also enjoy Adam and never post negative comments. NOT all of Kris OR Adam fans behave this way. I didn’t like your comment. I’m NOT extremely naive, NOT extremely dense, and certainly DON’T play silly little games.

    • Lisa

Usually big fans do not lose interest that fast. You haven’t even heard his cd. I suspect you are a Kris fan.

  • Andy

He is an awesome talent working with the best in the business. I can’t wait to hear it. Haters to the left!!!

    • Trish

Yeah Andy, form that line haters, to the left please.

  • Jason

Ah, Crispy, didn’t you just comment the same, word for word, on Towelrod? Boy you must really be obsessed with Lambert to check out all his press just to post negatively. Wow. Get a life buddy.

    • crispy

      Stop stalking me!

      • Jason

        When you stop stalking Lambert!

    • L*

You are not a man, you are a 50-year old granny frauen. LMAO!

      • Lii

Nice ~skillzz of generalization you got there.

    • crispy

BTW, I don’t know if you spelled it “Towelrod” on purpose or not, but that is hilarious! I am calling it that from now on.

      • Jason

It was a mis-print but yeah, we’re both idiots. You negatively obsessed. Me postively. I think we both need to get a life.

  • Jason

Oh, and I can’t wait for Lambert’s album. His voice is amazing. Plus, he’s hot.

    • EDUB

      Yikes.

    • Stevie

How is he hot? Temp wise or what? lol

      • Bill

Someone has to be attracted to effeminate pasty white guys with no discernible muscle tone and lots of make-up. Go Jason!

      • M

Bill you are pathetic. Move on.

  • L*

a move almost unprecedented for an album nearly two months out.

Really? All of Clay’s, Taylor Hicks’ debut, and both Davids’ CDs from last year both went number one on Amazon months before they were released. New year, same hyperbole about which AI contestant will be the next big thing. Turns out…none of them including Adam. Only EW, AI sites, and the Glamberts (aka the new Claymates) care about AI contestants, the rest of the world doesn’t. Including Slash. And Brian May (who pimped Constantine mind you). Really, get a grip!

    • Drew

      LOL
Take a chill pill. If you don’t care for Lambert, why are you wasting your time to bitch?

    • W*

      Cool story Bro.

      • Lii

        Hey!
        Don’t steal my line!!! ;)

      • W*

LOL! I didnt even see that! Excellent. I mean you have a point, but still Lambert’s (fans are) doing this WITH NO promotion. I’m pretty impressed right now.

    • Greta

Nope. You are incorrect sir. David Cook’s album was released two weeks after it went for pre-sale.

    • To L*

The difference is all those people had the presale happen a couple of weeks after the finale, when they were still riding high on popularity, not three months later.

      • da

Um…I don’t think so. We’re talking albums, not AI singles. No AI contestant that I know of has released their debut album just a few weeks after the show. Don’t get me wrong, I like Adam, and I hope he does well. But he’s not breaking new ground here. Including the Rolling Stone cover. Clay got his cover before Ruben.

    • allie

you’re right – no one cares about AI contestants. Certainly Carrie Underwood,Daughtry and Kelly Clarkson aren’t making it out there… I feel sorry for them actually, no grammy awards, poor record sales – it is terrible.

      • neetsie2000

Allie what planet have you been living on? Carrie has won numerous CMA awards, sold a LOT of albums, Kelly’s latest album has already generated two top 10 singles, Daughtry’s latest disc is also selling well and the first single ‘No Surprise’ is in heavy rotation on a lot of the top FM charts and his first album sold 5 million (or somewhere around there) copies. These AI artists have done pretty well to me.

      • @neetsie2000

I believe Allie was being sarcastic.

      • Stevie

Yeah sarcastic is fun. Makes the world turn around…..lol

    • Blondiegrrl

I don’t care about AI contestants; I care about Adam. What a lot of his naysayers fail to realize is that Adam’s fanbase extends far beyond Idol.

      • Nicole

Totally agree. I only watched AI because of Adam (and also came to appreciate Kris in the process). I’ll be buying Adam’s album, but I won’t be watching AI again unless someone on it catches my attention like Glambert did! Can’t wait to hear it.

      • T-Man

I am a new fan of Kris’s. I know this isn’t about him, but I came here to learn about Adam. I never watched Idol, only recently became a fan of Kris’s through him using a song from my favorite band The Script. I went to YouTube, listen to some of this guy Adam’s performances from Idol and the tour, and I must say, he is awesome! I just might become a new fan of this guy too. He seems like one cool dude. Rock it bro!

      • PJ

There’s absolutely nothing at all to base this on.

      • terie

How about the contest for the ULTIMATE WORLD IDOL on the tweeterwall of fame? Yeah! I know … not a big deal … but the entire WORLD voted for the Idols that the FANS were voting for … Kelly C. .. Carrie U. .. Clay A. .. David A. & David C. … Kris A. … etc. etc. … and who won with over 180K votes from FANS all over the WORLD? That’s right … ADAM LAMBERT!! That sounds like a pretty IMPRESSIVE FANBASE .. IMO!

      • wm

Your comment doesn’t make much sense. You say you don’t care about AI contestants, you only care about Adam. You would have never known about Adam if he wasn’t an AI contestant. Think about it? Isn’t AI where you first saw Adam?

    • Trish

Why all the hate? Why does it matter if Adam fans still care about him? Not all are Glamberts, some of us are just fans. But if even after 3 months, Adam is STILL getting on this media attention, and celebrity endorsement and fan appreciation, then hell maybe there is something to all the hype? HELL YEAH THERE IS!

      • Nick

Trish I am getting tired of seeing you all over the place. You are pissing alot of people off for someone who is suppose to be a fan. You are annoying. Stop the the grammar school language and spelling and let the real fans talk about him.

      • Ummmm

        WTF Nick?

      • Nick

What? I only said what others were thinking. You know I am right.

    • Frankie

As someone who has followed these shows since not just the first AI but since Popstars, the series that preceded Pop Idol in the UK, and who has worked in the music industry for a couple of decades, I can tell you there has NEVER been this level of interest in a talent show contestant or this level of support from the media and industry. Please don’t even compare the people you mentioned. They barely made a dent in sales outside of the US and there was never any real interest in them outside of the US (with the possible exception of Clay Aiken in the Far East but go to anywhere in Europe and mention his name and they think you’re talking about a gardening injury). Only Kelly, Jordin and, to a lesser extent, Daughtry have had any noticeable international success. Even the very successful in the US Carrie doesn’t sell well abroad because her genre doesn’t translate.

Still, if you want to continue living in your bubble, go ahead. Just don’t accuse other people of doing it.

      • crispy

Oh, please. You are the biggest liar on the entire internet. You claim to work in the music industry yet you don’t seem to have the slightest idea how the music industry works. So what are you, a receptionist?

      • Matt

Ok then Crispy, since you know so much about the music industry, tell us about it. What exactly do you know that we don’t? You yap about this person not knowing this, or that person is a liar, well come on then, if they are all so wrong, set them and everyone right and tell us.

      • crispy

Sweetheart, I’ve left about 10 comments doing exactly that. Read them. Learn something.

      • Matt

Well hell “Sweetie”, I must have dozed off then. They zapped right past me. You always call men Sweetheart? Just wondering…

    • Linda

      L *:
And you know this how? I am a David Cook fan and never knew that his album was available for pre-order on Amazon. You must be quite the AI fanatic!!!

    • rich

L* Exactly right. The only thing new about Lambert is that he’s a glam rocker–which is a first for AI. He wears more make-up than all the Miss America’s put together. But the other stuff has all been done before by previous idols–number 1 on Amazon, RS cover, rabid fans, etc. Let’s see where Lambert is in 3 years, 5 years. Maybe the rumored Lambert opening for Lady GaGa tour will materialize.

      • M

Are you jealous much Rich? Baha!

  • Twist

Rock On, Adam! Can’t wait for you to hit #1!

  • Susan

Laughing my butt off at these ridiculous comments. Little envious boys.
But I will agree with one thing. Lambert is hot.

    • L*

Envious? Really? Just commenting on the fact that each year a different contestant gets a ton of coverage, and every year they fail miserably. Same story, different year. Open your eyes.

      • Drew

Why don’t you go and do something useful with your time then and stop looking up articles about Lambert just to bitch around.

      • Susan

Maybe, but I’m a Lambert fan. You’re just some bored individual spreading negativity. If there was no envy involved, why bother to post and then keep checking the posts after your post to make comments? It’s sad really. :)

      • Trish

Susan, that was a witty remark. Love it! Also truthful as I see it anyways. Nope not blind, but am wearing sunglasses! LOL

      • Stevie

My eyes are open, now what?

    • Phil

If you mean flaming…yea, he’s hot.

      • Susan

And the bigots join the party!

      • Samantha

Oh he is flaming and HOT no doubt about that :D

      • Greta

Yum. Sorry. Lambert is hot. WHy don’t you post a pic of yourself and direct us all to it?

      • Sacha, 22

HELL YEAH flaming and HOT. As a girl, I do NOT freaking want to see VAG lmao. It’s ok for pervy old men to find lesbians hot but when it comes to hot gay dudes, the double standard kicks in. One hot guy is nice, two is is hotter buddy.

      • Kelly

I get so tired of jealous straight men making comments about Adam’s sexuality. Straight women like hot men period. And Adam is hot. Get used to it guys!

  • Samantha

    Awesome!!!!
    Can’t wait for his album!

  • Pam

His album is shaping up to definitely be the most daring and “best” (although I hate to use words like best as music is largely subjective) album to come out of idol ever. I personally CAN NOT WAIT to listen. It would be nice to have a single to listen to, cough RCA get on the ball, cough.

    • crispy

Gimme a break. There is nothing remotely “daring” about any of these producers. Ryan Tedder should be working with David Archuleta, not Adam Lambert.

      • Jonesy

Again, Ferras and Sam Sparro. I think it’s gonna be a win.

      • crispy

I’m not familiar with those two names.

      • beb

Crispy – Ferras’ song “Hollywood’s Not America” was going to be used as the good-bye song for American Idol Season 7, but it was replaced by that Ruben Studdard dud “Celebrate Me Home.” He put out a really good CD that you should check out, “Aliens and Rainbows.” Sam Sparro had a big #1 hit in the UK with “Black and Gold” (which did make it to the clubs here in the States). The song received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording (alongside Madonna and Lady GaGa).

      • crispy

Thanks! I’ll check them both out on Youtube.

      • terie

crispy: How about Greg Wells, Dr. Luke, Claude Kelly and didn’t Ryan Tedder write “Come Home” “Already Gone” “Halo”?? I love those songs and with ADAM’S VOCALS any song could be a WINNER no matter who wrote it!

    • Winston Mize

Idk bout the best because some Idols…eh hmm Miss Clarkson….have had some pretty stellar albums….but again we will just have to wait and see..

    • Bruce

But you haven’t even heard it. Just because you’re working with a cerain producer does not mean the result will reflect their work. I’m just keepin’ it real.

      • crispy

Yes, it does. Don’t be dumb.

  • mick

Still think Adam is going to be iconic. I am a little worried that everyone wants a piece of him- they see the dollar signs. Every big producer was clamoring to get in the studio with him. He can do anything. I hope he stands up for himself and lets all aspects of his talent shine. He needs to do a few stripped down acoustic tracks the Starlight he did on Good Morning America or Mad World or Tracks of My Tears. No one has a voice as nuanced and expressive. Too much electronic manipulation will be a shame. Do that to artists who can’t really sing. We need to hear Adam’s voice. To the doubters, just sit back and watch. I don’t care if anyone else buys his cd, I will have it on day one. He is also a class act and a decent, humble guy. This is a rare combination in a rock star. Oh, and he respects his parents and gives kudos to everyone who is helping him rise to stardom. Anyone in show business who compares to this guy? Can’t wait to watch him soar!

    • Ellis

Mick, totally agree with your comments.

    • Jen

Ditto. Love Adam. What people don’t seem to get is that his appeal isn’t just here in the States, its international. Outside of Kelly Clarkson, not many of the other idols have had the same level of success. Adam has tremendous potential.

      • Shania

Mmm. A lot of people here in London love him even the ones who hate Idol. He was mentioned on a couple of chat shows even which never happens with American Idol. They were just talking about how they were dissapointed America chose the safe, pretty boy over the one who shook the show up and was most consistant and exciting (I love Kris though). They were talking about how it’s sad the way America thinks and the way people judge books by their covers. Like they branded Kris boy next door, because he wears plaid, has big brown eyes and a Southern accent when Kris’s own bro said, “If you don’t know Adam, the mystery is him and Kris are VERY alike. Both are honest, loyal, good humored, respectful and want the best for everyone around them.”
My boyfriend has a feeling Kris and Allison’s albums will do better than Adam’s though even though he really likes Adam. Maybe he’s right. Maybe the hype will backfire on him. I hope not :(

      • Kelly

Shania. You and your fellow Londoners have it wrong , and I find your comment offensive!! It isn’t America being homophobic. Its all about Arkansas! Go Razorbacks! Its a little ‘ole state north east of Texas , not that populated and , therefore, they have a whole lot of drive to make the home boy win, (ehem, mass texting). So please England, stop calling us names , ie homophobic, when you dont understand the whole picture. I mean seriously, who else came out of Arkansas other than Bill Clinton?

      • Kelly

Seriously Shania, I love England and used to live in England , but “sad the way american thinks” is downright patronizing.

    • Kelly

I think we need to see Adam, not just hear him. He’s got a stellar voice but it’s the visual that makes him even more enticing.

    • Donna

Co-signing this comment. I think his “Tracks of My Tears” was brilliant and his best performance.

  • Connie

Already pre-ordered mine. Now I will follow crispy and Jason around so I can read their comments.

    • Trish

LOL Connie, me too. I already re-ordered mine at Amazon. I guess I will follow you following Cripsy and Jason around. They are stupid but funny because they are idiots! LOL

      • Trish

        I meant pre-ordered…..oh well. ;)

  • Alicia

Brilliantly stated. I think Lambert is amazing and I’m curious and hopeful and (im)patiently waiting for his album.

  • magic adam

To L, the amazing thing is that there was no announcement about the pre-order. Also, it’s fine that you don’t care about Adam Lambert, and true that every IDOL has a spike in interest when they start out. But, Adam got a standing O from Smokey Robinson, he was first to be granted permission by Led Zeppelin to sing one of their songs on AI, he was first to get permission from U2 to sing one of their songs on AI, first to be asked to do a movie soundtrack before his debut in music, first to have a Rolling Stone cover right out of the box. Watch and see this is nothing like the hype for other Idols. I never watched the show in my life. We found Adam on youtube because of all of the excitement about him. He is the real deal. But hey, you can listen to what you like. Adam will be huge worldwide. Wait and watch.

    • Blondiegrrl

Good post. I’m not an Idol junkie either. I did start watching last season, only because I had heard all the rave reviews about Adam and I had to find out who this guy was. He’s brilliant. I’m anxious to see what he’ll come up with now that he’s on his own. He’s no cookie cutter pop star, that’s for sure. This dude’s something special; his performances are electrifying.

    • Mike

“he was first to get permission from U2 to sing one of their songs on AI” Hmmmmm…..David Cook, Season 7 final 2 performance “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. No knock on Adam, but gotta give credit where credit is due!

      • Mike

oh right…and Elliott Yamin sang “One” with Mary J. Blige back in season 5.

      • Mike

“I never watched the show in my life. ”

ahhh all makes sense now :-)

      • Cookie D’Oh!

Ahahahah! That is so true. Simon was so full of himself as if U2 personally granted him permission to let Adam sing one of their songs (“One”), especially since AI had already cleared the same song three seasons ago for Elliott.

I loved Cook’s version of SHFWIL4. He may be new to the biz but boyfriend’s got the best rock growl off AI.

    • Trish

Magic Adam my hat is off to you. If you can become a fan AFTER Idol that is amazing. It is awesome that Adam still reaches people through all vehicles.
I knew it wouldn’t take long for someone to point out that David Cook sang a U2 song before Adam. But if you didn’t read Magic’s comment all the way, he stated he never watched Idol, so how would HE know that? Shhhhesshhh little things here.

      • Mike

Seriously??? I was just correcting an error that he/she stated. And having not watched the show before, it would make sense that they didn’t know. But how is wrong for me to inform everyone of an incorrect statement? I even acknowledged 30 minutes before your comment that it made sense that they didn’t know! Sheeeesh indeed.

      • Trish

Your right Mike, I didn’t see your comment acknowledging(sp?) that. I guess I will get my head out of my ass and go and do something else more productive. Since Crispy is following me around making nasty comments about what I write and now you. I can’t get a break on my day off. Sheeeshh. Everyone quit taking things personally. But I will BE BACK! lol

To Crispy, I don’t care what you think of my comments. Really. Dumb or not I am here to enjoy the post. If my comments are not to your liking, then free feel to move on to those who do. BTW thanks for counting how many I have posted. I hope it makes you feel better putting someone down.

Hey, I’m just trying to fit in with all of the nastygrams around here! :-) don’t worry..i didn’t take offense lol but agreed on doing something productive, i’ll try to do the same instead of re-hashing Idol moments from years ago! lol

You are all stupid and ignorant and down right boring people.

Adam has been the only contestant that has been allowed to perform a Led Zepplin song on AI.

      • Cookie D’Oh!

Big deal. That’s only because the guy’s kids were Adam fans. He cleared it for his kids, NOT for Adam.

      • Matt

And you know this how Cookie? Are you a personal friend? It is a big deal. It really doesn’t matter why Adam got the clearance, what matters is he did. It only took 8 seasons, but no big deal. LOL
And if you think about it, it was actually cleared for Adam, his kids didn’t sing it did they?

  • Angel

Yes, you must be right to say ADAM’s lucky number is TWO. His birthday is 29 which add up to 11, then 1 +1 = TWO.
So, ADAM is meant to be where he landed as runner-up which is LUCKY for him. Also, that title of his debut single is a good one – Time for Miracles. Everything is looking great for ADAM! All the luck and happiness, ADAM baby!

I agree with Mick. I am a little worried that Adam is being pulled in so many directions by so many producers. I hope they let him just SING! He doesn’t need any help from electronics. But, I will buy whatever he releases because he is in a class by himself. Adam rocks!
