'New Moon' soundtrack outsells Tim McGraw on the albums chart

Take that, Bublé! The really-quite-good New Moon soundtrack just took the Canadian crooner’s place atop the Billboard 200 after selling 153,000 copies in its first full week in stores, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Along with last weekend’s receipts, that brings the vampire-flick soundtrack up to a nice ten-day total of 268,000.

The New Moon soundtrack beat this week’s biggest new release, Tim McGraw‘s Southern Voice. The country star will have to settle for No. 2 after moving a respectable (if lower than usual) 137,000 units in week 1. Down at No. 10, Joss Stone‘s Colour Me Free sold 27,000—not awful, but a shadow of the 118,000 her previous effort bowed with two years ago. Teutonic metal dudes Rammstein came in at No. 13 with Liebe Ist Für Alle Da, which I believe translates roughly to “this album sold 22,000 copies.” And Flight of the Conchords snuck into the Top 20 at No. 19 with a middling 20,000 copies sold of I Told You I Was Freaky. (The Kiwi comedy duo’s first album, by contrast, bowed at No. 3 with 52,000 last year.)

What do you think of those sales numbers? Are you surprised McGraw couldn’t hold off hordes of Twihards at the cash register? Make yourselves heard in the comments section below.

And that’s just how it should be.

  • HAH

Not surprised. New Moon has more layers to its demographic than Tim McGraw.

This is astute and TRUE. IASFM.

    power to the twihards YAY!!!

  • Sia

No New Moon deserves to be at top. And I’m not surprised there are more Twilight fans then Tim Mcgraw fans.

  • Ann

Rammstein’s “Liebe ist fuer alle da” is awesome!

I’d just like to point out that a LOT of us who bought the New Moon soundtrack aren’t Twihards. I bought it because it had a lot of new music on it that I was interested in, and a lot of my friends got it, too, and they either hate Twilight or have no interest in it.
So I’d say this soundtrack success has more to do with great bands like DCFC, Muse, The Killers, etc. than with Twilight. Even though I know some Twilight fans would buy anything with Pattinson’s face on it.

  • Alicia

Yea, Twilight! I’m a total fangirl, but that aside, the soundtrack is brilliant. I’ve always been into indie, and it’s great to see some success come to those bands. And I love that so many young people are being exposed to excellence in music.

  • couchgrouch

sorry to say it but McGraw’s cd is loaded with weak songs.

Bet you anything, if all the same artists and songs on the New Moon Soundtrack were on some other movie that wasn’t as big as the Twilight series, It wouldn’t have sold that many CDs & wouldn’t have debuted at #1.

If it has a popular name attached to the product. it will most likely sell.

I think it’s probably a wash. Yeah, some hardcore Twilight fans would lay down money for godawful music just because it had Twilight on the label. On the other hand, however you feel about Twilight, it IS a strong soundtrack with great music, and it’s probably attracting non-Twilight fans as well.
And it didn’t debut at #1, I don’t think. Buble beat it out.

  • Jane

i don’t see why they thought twilight was fading when buble beat out the soundtrack before? because his album had been out for a week and the ne wmoon soundtrack had only been out for 3 days. this is how it should be and people should have realized it before. the new moon soundtrack is amazing.

Love New Moon soundtrack it’s soooo good. Love the new Lady Gaga song Bad Romance it’s addicting.

  • jaime

Huge mcgraw fan but yeah i mean the album has like 2 or 3 good songs! oh well already bought TRAINS new albume and am jamming to it…

  • I may be wrong, but I think that the Joss Stone album is a Target/iTunes exclusive. If so, the #s she posted weren’t that bad.

  • eclav

I don’t know if being a Target exclusive would mean Joss Stone couldn’t sell more, since Pearl Jam’s “Backspacer” was also a Target exclusive and it debuted with 189000.
