Kris Allen: How to explain the 'American Idol' champ's disappointing chart performance?

KA was always the boring member of the entire competition a year ago. He skirted through until Danny Gokie got the boot for not being pretty enough and then claimed all of the religious right voste that had previously propelled Gokie to the top three. Meanwhile, on the weeks that KA did very well, the judges at Idol extolled his originality when in fact most of his banner pieces (Think Ain’t no sunshine) were complete rips from other artists. In bald fact, there was nothing original to stand out about this dude. He was stunningly handsome and nice and as we have seen time and time again NICE finishes last in pop music (compare and contrast the careers of Lady Gaga and Brook White for example). Even KA’s single is a COMPLETE knockoff of an existing song, and is almost an exact copy of the original. And here’s the problem – what makes them think anyone who LIKES that song would want it from KA when they already have it from the original artisits and like it? It’ s a complete misfire on the producers part and proof that nobody makes it to the top in POP by wrote copying of another artist. Enough of the banter about Adam Lambert stealing anything from KA – the reality is if anything KA stole the title through the help of a million churches who hated non-str8 guys, and now that the bed is made KA is lying in it with his pretty and boring little wife. This guy is the farthest thing from a POP star Idol could produce. Married, forgettable, and bland. Even as a fifth member of a boy band you would have forgotten him. MEH

I voted for Kris on AI towards the end. I wasn’t a big fan at first, but he won me over. I’m not a teenager, and I will buy music. However, if they were mostly trying to sell his album via television, then that was the wrong strategy. By all means they should be using that medium, but they should not be using just that medium. My watching AI last year was an anomaly. It was the one and only time that I ever watched it all the way through. I don’t watch television much at all, and I definitely did not watch any of the programs on which Kris premiered his album. So, I had no idea that it had come out already. Adam Lambert not only had a presence on television, but news of his album coming out was all over the internet which is where I get most of my current news. I don’t want Lambert’s album, but I was waiting for Kris’ album. I would have purchased it sooner had I known. His handlers really need to make sure that he has an internet presence. Nowadays that’s as important, if not more so, as a television presence.

It’s now a few months past the time Kris’ debut album was released. How many albums has he really sold so far? I heard only 250,000. If this is true, then takes the crown as the lowest selling American Idol winner. Taylor Hick’s album debut at #2 and he sold 250,000 the first two weeks.
