Neil Diamond covers Adam Sandler, becomes the Grinch who ruined Hanukkah

I thought my Chanukah wishes had been answered when I heard that Neil Diamond did a cover of Adam Sandler’s “The Chanukah Song.” Until I listened to it: ugh. Then things got worse. I saw the music video, done in slipshod Flash animation. Needless to say, there was wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Sandler’s song for a musically underrepresented holiday works because it’s fun and feels off-the-cuff. For some reason the Jewish Elvis though we needed a straight-faced, fist-pumping version of a novelty song. Well, this is the same Hebraic hero who—for some reason—has recorded three Christmas albums, so what do you expect?

There’s potential in this cartoon video for the song, and it’s criminally wasted. ‘Toon versions of David Lee Roth, The Fonz and Captain Kirk show up, but they don’t do anything other than smile/leer and raise their animated eyebrows.

Am I missing some secret subtext in this painfully vanilla cover? Or should we let this crazy Diamond shine on?

Come on, putting Paul Newman and Goldie Hawn together and coming up with Adam Sandler is funny.

  • Chris

Aw let them have it. It gives old Jewish ladies something to listen to. Oh and Neil, in the first version its “Get Drunk in Tijuanica”
    Merry Christmas!

    • adam

      actually it’s the second version…

  • H

It’s Neil, so it’s awesome, but yeah I do miss the light touch.

  • Faze Craze

It’s typical Neil Diamond. Overly earnest and pompous. Which makes it awesome.

  • sam

I enjoyed this–his performance is clearly done in a pleasant way–you just don’t like Neil, but he is not the pompous person that you claim. Why does everybody have to be young for you to think they are worth anything?

  • Danya

To be honest, I actually kind of enjoyed that.

    • Sue1

      I did too.

      • k

I did three. It was funny.

  • Marianna

I kind of liked it too. But what do I know? I loved Neil Diamond in the Jazz Singer.

  • jared

Jeez, Lynch. Lighten up . . . it’s fun. How can you ruin this stupid song?

I am a major Neil fan – I love his music, but this video stinks. It’s very amateurish, corny and
“small” & “bush league”. Looks like something for a high school project to be thrown together in an hour. You would expect much more “panache” & superb creativity from someone of Neil’s production folks. It’s pretty pitiful.

    • Matt

Hmm, let’s see you make a nice Flash video like that! That took more than an hour, trust me. Cartoonish != amateurish.

  • I’ve heard much worse

Maybe it’s one of those things when someone talks something up or down and then you expect it to be great or awful…you made it sound awful, so it was pleasantly better than I expected. It’s also nice to see a Jewish guy singing a Chanukah song instead of cynically putting out a Christmas album…cough cough…Neil Diamond/Barbra Streisand/Barry Manilow/Bette Midler.

  • JB

    Like…this is a serious song ?
Like Jared said – how can you ruin a stupid song.
    L I G H T E N up.

  • darclyte

    I liked it.
It was almost like a reverse parody.
Usually, a parody takes something that takes itself seriously and makes it funny. This took something funny and took it seriously…and it became a parody.
I think that was actually the intent.
I thought that it was full of win.

  • Carol

    I liked it!

  • dave

I agree with the review. Adam Sandler’s song is funny and charming because it felt off-the-cuff and because of the way he delivers the lines. All of that is removed for this version.

  • Carrie

Holy crap, is that Dave Navarro rocking the guitar solo?!?

    This is gold!
