Ke$ha dethrones Susan Boyle on the albums chart

We all knew this moment was coming, but now it’s really here: Susan Boyle‘s I Dreamed a Dream is no longer the No. 1 album in the country, for the first time since just after Thanksgiving. That honor goes instead to Ke$ha, who bowed atop the Billboard 200 albums chart with 152,000 copies sold of her Animal, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Boyle sold 93,000, small potatoes for her after the past few weeks, but good enough for No. 2.

Ke$ha’s was the only new release that made it into this week’s Top 20. The next-highest chart debut came from Idol alum Katharine McPhee down at No. 27, with a weak 15,000 copies sold of her Unbroken.

A few other notable chart performances: Rihanna hasn’t yet found a new smash single, but she’s showing staying power on the albums chart. Rated R climbed to No. 11 (from No. 14 last week) with 27,000 in new sales. Lil Wayne’s Young Money crew is hanging on, too, selling an additional 26,000 copies of We Are Young Money for a No. 13 finish. And Lady Antebellum continue to sell loads of their self-titled 2008 debut; with their next album due in just a couple of weeks, their old one moved another 24,000 units to place at No. 17.

How long do you think Ke$ha will last at the top? Could Boyle come roaring back, or has she seen her final week at No. 1? Make your predictions below.

    Boyle couldn’t be #1 forever.

    • GG

Subo will be back next week, and the following week (she’ll be on Oprah on Jan. 19). But seriously, who is the fanbase for either one of these artists? Dirty tween girls and grandmas? One can’t sing or dance and has no discernible taste and the other only sings cover songs. Gimme a break.

      • wtf

good point. Nobody that I know will admit to buying boyle.

  • Sue

Bet she won’t be there 6 weeks, though. Subo probably back on top next week.

    • Phil

No, in six weeks the new Sade “Soldier Of Love” will be #1 especially before and after Valentine’s Day.

    • Preston

I think Susan Boyle will return back to No. 1 or stay in the top 5 during this month. It’s still going to be a strong seller. Right now, Kesha has a hot single at the moment and they wanted the buzz to continue with the new album and it’s succeeded with the No. 1 debut.

    Viva SuBo!

  • How long?

Two weeks. By then, everyone who wants it will have it.

  • Ed

While I understand the appeal of her first single, I don’t understand the appeal of Ke$ha. She’s actually kind of annoying. I listened to a stream of her album, and it was pretty bad. i think by this time next year, she’ll prove to be a one hit (maybe two) wonder.

The reviews on Amazon are hilariously abusive.

    • Sarah

      agreed.

    • Juniper

I agree! She sounds like the lovechild of Lady Gaga and Shakira – two artists who are both way more original. I don’t see the appeal.

      • frosting

Once again, Lady Gaga is NOT original (look up, David Bowie, Madonna, Grace Jones, etc.) and Shakira is a sellout. She started out being an amazing artist in her homeland, then felt the need to cross over into the English world where she would sell more records and make more money, so she made herself over as the Latina Britney Spears.

    • Andy F

Stacey Q’s back and she’s better than ever!

    • Sara

She’s the new “Britney” with her studio created voice and beats…only trashier (who knew that was possible?). I think it’s a sign of the apocalypse. Or just another sign of the end of the music industry…

  • Kevin

Katherine’s sales are very good for little publicity.

    • mscisluv

I never heard a word about her coming out with a new album this week.

  • Telly B

LOL Another American Idol flops, this one for the second time…

    • +anya

Ha ha and I love it!

      • chris

        Why do you love it?

  • crispy

I’m sure Susan Boyle’s marketing team is working overtime to correct this. They’ll have her vomiting in Posh Spice’s closet by the end of the week.

  • PlayingHardToGet

Sublime, meet ridiculous. Ridiculous, this here’s sublime.

  • NetFix

She’s a little spit fire compared to that death warmed over

    • PlayingHardToGet

I’d still bet on Boyle over Ke$ha in a fistfight.

  • Phil

oh and Simon, as per Island Def Jam, the next Rihanna single is going to be “Rude Boy”, y’all can start making guesses as to which rapper they’ll throw on there for the radio remix now…

  • Kelly

….. And music breathes its dying breath.

  • Mary

Admittedly, I’m not a massive Susan Boyle fan, but I’d rather see her top the charts than Ke$ha. At least Subo sings…her songs are not overflowing with autotune and sound effects. Ke$ha’s single sucks…stupid lyrics and annoying studio tricks.

    • PlayingHardToGet

Boyle’s album didn’t make my socks go up and down either, but she’s got talent and potential. That’s two up on Ke$ha.

      • Shan

I don’t think Kesha is trying to be the next Susan Boyle, I think unfair comparisons are being made.

  • I loved the Katharine McPhee album. Very surprising direction for her but it suits her.

I think Ke$sha will only be on top for a couple of weeks at most; I’d say she’s #1 for 2 weeks and then Lady Antebellum goes #1 on the 26th.

  • paige

when is this woman’s 15 minutes done????

    • +anya

      Who, McPhee or Ke$ha?

      • chris

        SuBo

      • MissVampireDiaries

Never heard of Ke$ha? Too much country music for you missy!!

McPhee was a contestant on American Idol some years ago.
