It’s been a big couple of weeks for the Brown family of Massachusetts. First, Republican politician Scott Brown got elected to the late Edward M. Kennedy’s U.S. Senate seat on Jan. 19; then, this Tuesday, Scott’s singer daughter Ayla Brown released a new EP, Circles. You might remember Ayla, 21, from season five of American Idol, where she made it all the way to the Top 16 before being eliminated. She currently plays basketball for Boston College, where she’s a senior, in addition to trying to get her music career off the ground.
Circles features five peppy pop tracks — nothing that rises above “generically competent,” I’m sorry to say, but you might disagree. Check out the moody black-and-white video for lead single “Pick It Up” below and weigh in: Do you think Ayla Brown has what it takes to make a post-Idol career happen? Will her father’s political success change that equation?

Ugh, aside from how annoying I found her to be in local press in Boston, I really didn’t like the song or video. Am I alone?
Song is actually pretty good but the video is awful.
Video is horrible, song is alright.
Being the daughter of Republican senator is going to stymie any career she has. If she shows any skin, or sings about having fun, parties, or sex in anyway she will feel a backlash.
Look at what happened to Megan McCain when she showed a little cleveage on Twitter.
The video looks like a school project.
I did not associate the new senator from Massachusetts with Ayla Brown from Idol. I am glad she is playing basketball in college.
I was decidedly not an Ayla fan in season 5, and was relieved when she didn’t make top 12. She had that dead-behind-the-eyes, vacantly pretty, Kristy Lee Cook vibe. And now, I will forever associate her with her creepy dad using his victory as an opportunity to advise the nation that “Ayler” is “available.” Thanks, Senator Joe Simpson. I’ll keep that in mind.
I like the track a lot. It actually has very good potential.
Her voice is great. They obviously had no video budget.
That’s OK she looks real good in a couple of the shots.
She’s green, she has a chance if she dedicates herself, maybe takes some acting lessons.
Song has a good chance.
No Matter how you slice it, the girl is beautiful.
The song is really good. I agree with redman,
they obviously had no video budget. But she’s pretty enough to stick in front of a camera and look at.
If the song sucked it would all suck, but the song is actually quite good!
Ayla is quite an amazing and gifted young lady.
People think she has the silver spoon in her mouth, and money to burn. This video proves otherwise, she just did what she could. I’ve seen far worse videos that have probably had a 100k price tag.
I think what counts is the content, this is a meaningful and thoughtful song. It strikes a lot of chords with me right now. I love it!!!
I like it….alot. She’s seems to be a together young lady, with a beautiful voice. I wish her nothing but good things.
I think she is actually quite good and has a strong voice – almost better than I remember her. The video clip of her singing with the Boston pops is also excellent. The video is not very good, but it’s not done with a big budget or intended to look fancy or over-directed. She clearly has talent – more so than some other popular artists. Good luck Ayla with your well-rounded talents and committed family!
It’s a pretty good song, and she can really sing, but that video was weird.
