Olympic Playlist of the Day from curler Chris Plys

Categories: Olympics, Passion Pit

As the 2010 Winter Olympics winds down in Vancouver, EW.com wanted to find out what music is inspiring US athletes. So we asked a variety of Olympic competitors what song (or playlist of songs) they’ll be grooving to before they compete.

Chris Plys, Curling (the sport is on USA, CNBC and MSNBC today). You may remember Twittering Chris as our first Olympic Stud of the Day!

“Drumsticks” by Doomtree
“Champion” by Brother Ali
Dixon’s Girl by Dessa
“Hand Over Fist” by Mike Mictlan + Lazerbeak
“Guarantees” by Atmosphere
“Sleepyhead” by Passion Pit

Of the final track, Plys says it’s “just one of those songs that gets me goin’. All of Passion Pits’ stuff is just a little different and being a musician myself I am always lookin’ for something unique that can get my mind going.”

Chilly B of Newcleus dies at age 47

Categories: In Memoriam, Newcleus

Sad news: Chilly B from pioneering rap act Newcleus has died at age 47 following a stroke, according to an announcement on the group’s MySpace. Formed in 1977 in Brooklyn, Newcleus emerged when hip-hop was still a local sound centered in New York’s outer boroughs. They’re remembered to this day for fusing electro instrumentation with the then-new rap genre to create eternally fresh grooves like “Jam On Revenge (The Wikki-Wikki Song)” and “Jam On It.”

The Music Mix extends its condolences to this artist lost too soon. Listen to “Jam On Revenge” below, then share your memories of Chilly B and Newcleus.

Happy Birthday, Johnny Cash: He would be 78 today

Categories: Misc.

Though he shuffled off this mortal coil in September of 2003 at the age of 71, the immortal Man in Black lives on: this week alone, in an iTunes milestone, the new posthumous release American VI: Ain’t No Grave, and in multiple remembrances from media outlets, as well as Cash’s own friends and collaborators (see this excellent Q&A with Rick Rubin, producer of his career-revitalizing American Recordings).

Known as almost formidably imposing and forceful presence—you know what he did in Reno—for most of his professional life, Cash was actually capable of revealing a lighter side, pretty awesomely. Watch him “impersonate a rock and roll singer impersonating Elvis,” here:

That sneer! Those hips! That possible sciatica! Give us your own favorite Johnny Cash moments and memories, below.

'You're So Vain': Did Carly Simon just reveal that it's about David Geffen? Probably not.

OMG, you guys! Stop the presses! Carly Simon has finally revealed the true identity of the dude who was so vain, he probably thought 1972′s “You’re So Vain” was about him! At least, that’s what U.K. tabloid The Sun would have you believe.

Simon re-recorded “You’re So Vain” for her album Never Been Gone, which has been out since last October. In a column that’s been widely circulated today, the Sun notes that if you play the re-recorded tune backwards, you can hear Simon whisper the name “David.” This, according to the Sun, means that Simon must have been talking about David Geffen, the head of her record label at the time.

So is it true? A rep for Simon confirms to the Music Mix that she does whisper “David” backwards on the new “You’re So Vain.” But that’s hardly definitive proof that the song has been about Geffen all along. “It’s just a clue,” Simon’s rep adds. “There are lots of ‘Davids.’” Indeed. The Sun offers no evidence whatsoever beyond that rather common first name. She could be talking about anyone — David Beckham, David Schwimmer, David Dinkins, Dave Matthews, the Biblical King David, my uncle David, that statue in Florence

Johnny Depp, Chrissie Hynde, many more on Haiti tribute, 'I Put a Spell on You': Watch the video

Step back, Babs and Beiber: In a new Haiti tribute single, Celtic rock icon (and dental legend) Shane McGowan is joined by friends like Johnny Depp, the Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde, Nick Cave, Paloma Faith, Clash guitarist Mick Jones, the Sex Pistols’ Glen Matlock, Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie, and more an all-star cover of Screamin’ Jay Hawkin’s 1956 blues torcher “I Put a Spell on You”

Pre-order the single, profits of which go directly to Concern Worldwide‘s work in Haiti, here. And tell us: as uncharitable as it may be to judge, well, efforts devoted to charity, where would you place McGowan and co.’s contribution in the recent music-for-Haiti outpouring (e.g.“We Are the World,” “Everybody Hurts,” Linkin Park’s “Not Alone”)?

Shakira plays love match with tennis star Rafael Nadal in new video 'Gypsy'

Game, set, schwing: Shakira takes it to the net (or more accurately, some muy misty rocks) with Spanish tennis champ Rafael Nadal, a.k.a. Señor Sexy Headband, in the clip for new single “Gypsy”:

She is no Stevie, but she might steal your clothes and wear them if they fit her. In the meantime, she will make do with ingeniously wrapped window treatments. And stroll soulfully on an invisible treadmill. And tell truths with her hips. Dios Mio!

'American Idol' reveals its season 9 exit song: Will Young's 'Leave Right Now'

American Idol is going back to its roots for its season 9 exit song. A 19 Entertainment spokesperson confirms that “Leave Right Now,” by Will Young (the winner of season one of AI‘s British predecessor Pop Idol), will help usher out booted contestants beginning with tonight’s initial semifinal results show all the way through the end of May. Thematically speaking, it’s probably the harshest and most succinctly titled adieu, so brace yourself for the sight of sobbing singers as Mr. Young croons the words “I think I better leave right now/ I’m feeling weaker and weaker/ Somebody better show me out/ Before I fall any deeper/ I think I better leave right now.” Then again, at least it’s not Jojo’s “Leave (Get Out).”

Too harsh? Just right? Make you long for a Carrie Underwood cover of “Home Sweet Home”? Chris Brown defends Tiger Woods: Is this supposed to be helpful?

Chris-BrownImage Credit: Rob Kim/Retna LtdSay what you will about Tiger Woods’ PR strategy right now, but somehow I doubt it includes getting co-signs from the likes of Chris Brown. “I think people always deserve a second chance,” Brown said yesterday in a Detroit radio interview spotted by MTV News. “I hope [Woods] gets back on the field and does his thing, ’cause he is the best at it…Whatever [Woods'] personal life is, and this goes for me and him, his personal life is his personal life. Nobody has the right to place judgment or make any judgment on anybody else’s personal life when they’re not directly involved with them.”

Forget Tiger for a moment. Maybe this is just me, but the more I hear Chris Brown talking about second chances this way, the less inclined I am to think he himself deserves one yet. It’s been a little over a year since he brutally attacked his then-girlfriend Rihanna, a misdeed that MTV says Brown called a “hiccup and a major mistake” in that radio interview. Really, Chris? Hiccups are what happen when you drink too much soda. We all know what Chris Brown did that night; he pleaded guilty in a court of law to assaulting Rihanna. That’s not what I call a hiccup. That’s abuse, and it’s a felony, and implying that “nobody has the right to place judgment” on it is seriously problematic.

Why is Chris Brown even talking about Tiger Woods’ sex scandal, anyway? I recognize that he probably didn’t choose to be asked this question, but if ever there was a time for a “no comment,” this was it. Using the Woods story as an excuse to offer up some self-serving musings on his own actions was simply an awful idea. I can’t see how these remarks will help either Woods or Brown rehabilitate their respective images.

I’ve asked Brown’s label if they have any further comment on this mess. In the meantime, what do you think of Brown’s decision to weigh in on Tiger Woods?
