Happy Birthday, Johnny Cash: He would be 78 today

Though he shuffled off this mortal coil in September of 2003 at the age of 71, the immortal Man in Black lives on: this week alone, in an iTunes milestone, the new posthumous release American VI: Ain’t No Grave, and in multiple remembrances from media outlets, as well as Cash’s own friends and collaborators (see this excellent Q&A with Rick Rubin, producer of his career-revitalizing American Recordings).

Known as almost formidably imposing and forceful presence—you know what he did in Reno—for most of his professional life, Cash was actually capable of revealing a lighter side, pretty awesomely. Watch him “impersonate a rock and roll singer impersonating Elvis,” here:
