Ricky Martin comes out: 'I am a fortunate homosexual man'

Filed under: News and tagged:

Ricky-MartinImage Credit: UPI/Jim Ruymen/LandovLatin heartthrob Ricky Martin announced on his blog today that he is “a fortunate gay man,” which probably elicited two reactions: “duh!” and “double duh!”

Duh: Anyone who looks like Ricky is “fortunate.” And double duh: The  announcement that he’s gay is about as shocking as when Sean Hayes came out on the cover of The Advocate last month. After all, Ricky has been living la vida “don’t ask, don’t tell” for a long time—sometimes there was a girlfriend; other times, Ricky was doing stretching exercises on a beach. With another guy. In a Speedo.

But let’s put the cynicism (and the “He Bangs” jokes) aside for a moment. Coming out — even in this post Ellen/Rosie/Lance Bass/Neil Patrick Harris age — takes courage, especially when you’re a public figure. You immediately become a spokesperson, whether you like it or not (and for that matter, whether the gay community wants you to be or not.) In fact, the entire gay movement can apparently rest on your shoulders: “[Ricky Martin's] decision to model this kind of openness and honesty can lead to a greater acceptance for countless gay people in the U.S., in Latin America and worldwide,” said Jarrett Barrios, president of GLAAD, in a statement.

Moreover, your sexual orientation ends up defining you: The word “gay” will always precede “singer” or “actor” in a way that the word “straight” doesn’t always precede, say, Tom Hanks’ name. As proud as many of us are of our sexual orientation, we still want to be known for more than that.

So Ricky deserves plaudits—no matter how overdue or obvious the announcement may be.

What do you think, readers? Should we be hailing Ricky for coming out? Or is this one big anti-climax?

Is anyone else surprised? I’m betting on Seacrest being next.

    • Rosalie

NO we should not be hailing him at all! He is and has not been relevant since 2000. If he was so courageous he would have come out back then, but ofcourse, money talks. I respect peoples privacy 100%, but for him to come out now is as relevant as my neighbor coming out. Lance Bass and Clay Aiken did the same thing, they came out when they no longer mattered in the entertainment world. Also, being gay does not make anyone more fortunate than being straight. He is a rich privilaged gay man. If he was so fortunate, he would have shared his good fortune about 10 or 11 years ago.

      • Jolie

        Don’t be so bitter…

      • D’s Advocate

So your neighbor shouldn’t come out until he’s “relevant”?

Just be happy for anybody who feels comfortable to come out. It’s not like there’s a ticker tape parade waiting for everyone on the other side of that revelation.

      • kyle

you took the words right out of my mouth, rosalie…i agree wholeheartedly…i respect someone like ellen MUCH more who came out at the height of her sucess and show…she had to go through hell, but she made it out and is much stronger for it

      • Liam

He should be congratulated, and his decision as to when respected. We each come out in our own time and in our own way. Putting his celebrity — and his heritage — aside, it was a hell of alot more difficult and risky to come out 10 years ago than it is today. Save the attitude for those numerous politicians and policy makers who not only don’t come out until they’re caught, but actively promote homophobia.

      • Ugh

Get over yourself. Coming out as a gay entertainer isn’t a simple matter. It SHOULD be, but it’s not. And people like you make coming out even harder. Don’t judge from your living room or office. It’s not your life.

      • Kyle

Coming out is a very personal thing. It doesn’t matter when he came out. He wasn’t ready 10 years ago, and apparently he is now. Just because he’s not super relevant right now has nothing to do with when he comes out. Let him be who he wants to be.

      • Rosalie

I am not bitter at all. I know that coming out is a personal thing, and that it can be very difficult. HOwever people knew he was gay already and he denied it. It’s like he was ashamed. Believe me, I’ve known about Ricky since he was in Menudo and another group he participated in called Munecos de Papel which translates to paper dolls. He is not doing this because he is ready, he is doing this as a publicity stunt because he is writting a memoir. His true fans would have stayed with him no matter what. Alas, gay or not, he became irrelevant 10 yrs ago. Can you name his last three albums?

      • Dream Out Loud

perhaps he took 10-11 years to make sure he, unlike you, could spell privileged correctly. I think you should bring a dictionary to your next bigot rally. give the man some credit for doing it at all, even though it doesn’t fit your timetable. Unless, of course, Rosalie is the judge and jury for all things homosexual.

      • KC

        I agree about Seacrest.

      • CSC

Rosalie/Kyle: Coming out happens when the person feels ready. Not when the media thinks your “hot” or when it will have the most impact on your career. He is an individual and a father and needs to do what is best for himself and his family. More people need to just live their lives and not try to manipulate or mis-use their power or status just to cause an “affect.”

      • Tony

Well, I am not getting into the whole “when is it right to come out etc thing”, but I just wanna point out that he might not be relevant in the States right now, but he has always been here in Puerto Rico, loved and respected by many. Here we have a culture that is way less tolerant than of gays and lesbians than what we see in the States. So coming out of the closet, a person like him here in Puerto Rico is a big thing… He is the only famous Puerto Rican I can think of who has come out of the closet.

      • R.

if you “agree with peoples privacy 100%” were do you get off on the value of someones revalation. He didnt have to tell anyone and i wish he hadnt because truthfully no one has the right to assume or pressure someone to revealing their sexual orientation. Privilage has no correlation to money as you put it. He was relating fortunate family, health, or happiness. Gay would be irrelevant but he said it because he could and as it seems in a very fortunate time of his life without pressure to please anyones will but his own.

      • Tomrd16

actually Ricky Martin was “relevant” to the USA for a few years last decade but ever since he was a teenager he’s been relevant for the rest of the world and his popularity hasn’t disappeared yet, I know that some people here think the world doesn’t go beyond the USA borders but for him is not the same to come out now as it was for Sean Hayes he’s always been a world wide popstar before and after he became an american one so I still think it’s brave for him to come out.

      • Edmonton Girl

I don’t believe it is any of your business, Rosalie, or anyone else’s. You are entitled to your opinion, but I don’t know why people feel they even have to have an opinion on this. It is not like you or I will ever meet him, and I don’t believe he owes anyone any explanation.

      • James

Dude, you guys are being pretty negative. Regardless if Ricky hasn’t been that popular in the America market, he’s still HUGELY popular throughout much of latin America and the spanish speaking US population. He still sells out shows. Unless you’re latino or Mexican American like me, you have no idea what kind of pressure that puts you under. So I can see either way with him, and keep in mind he was never in the closet with his family and friends. Cut him some slack. I did it at 14, he’s almost 40. To each their own.

      • Joseph

Who are you to criticize why someone chooses to come out you are very bitter and sad person. Go get a life and enjoy the fact the numbers are growing. Never push someone out a window when they are asking for help back in the room… Sad Sad Panda

      • Elizabeth

His true fans will always admire and respect him. He may be not “relevant” in USA, but he is loved superstar around the world.

      • Jen

Thanks for the insight, Tony (@7:32 PM). I didn’t realize and that’s very interesting.

      • Nate

Agree 100% Rosalie – he’s not relevant anymore so who cares…he’s so brave..NOT! I guess now he can squeeze out a bit more attention over this.

      • maria

he has always given back you sound like a hater… and he is still relevant for music and open doors..this was the right time for him to do it when he was comfortable with himself and for his benefit and peace of mind not for anyone else

      • coco

Rosalie,RM is huge, respected and relevant in Latin American countries in 2010! This means a lot to his hispanic fans and you are just being ridiculous by demeaning his courage to come out of the closet in front of machistas latinamerican men.
He has all my love and support since he was in Menudo.
        Shame on you!

      • David

        AGREE!!!
I love how “irrelevant” stars suddenly discover their roots or identity when their careers need a boost or no longer matter. The rest of us didn’t have millions to fall back on when we came out and were rejected by our family. What about stars like Sylvester, icons of the gay movement… people who still matter long after they are gone. At the end of the day, I DON’T CARE THAT RM IS GAY!

      • aboonie

I beg to differ, the fact that he is not on every TV screen in the US doesn’t meean he has become irrelevant. Ricky Martin is very relevant in all of Latin America and is one of the top singers turning hit, after hit. Which brings me to my second point. This might affect his career more than anyone coming out in the US. Gay people don’t sit well in Latin America and this pretty much may damage his career.

      • Rick

HEY! You said EXACTLY what I was thinking! You’re as smart as I am. ;+) But isn’t it so totally acceptable to ‘come out’ now? I mean, I thought it was so commonplace that almost everyone was expected to do it. “Aren’t you gay?” “No why?, are YOU gay?” “Of COURSE I’m gay!” “Well, I’ll be gay too.” “Fabulous! We’re all gay together!”

      • Matt

Please, when has coming out of the closet in the last 10 years hurt anyone? If anything it’s a move to increase popularity. Stop acting like it’s “Courageous” and start going back to the “WHO CARES!” movement.

If Crispin Glover came out and said he was completely asexual, no one would give a rat’s ass.

      • mamaga

maybe not relevant in the US but in Latin America he is, so please, he’s not only known in the US

      • Juan

Ricky Martin has been very relevant since 2000. Just not to ignorant people like you who can barely speak English.

      • Ellen

        who are you to judge???
because people like you the world is what it is… homophobic!!

      • Tarc

Martin is perfectly *relevant* in his traditional market – the Latin language/music market. He simply took a little side jaunt in English speaking music. He makes plenty of money, and regardless of how silly coming out sounds, I’m glad that he is setting a good example for his children and being truthful about his life to them and the public.

      • Sally in Chicago

He’s latino. He’s Puerto Rican I believe and it’s very Anti-cultural to be gay. You have to leave the Island.
It’s rumored that he was molested by Mendez, his manager during his Menudo days….a lot of talk about that.
Maybe he’s just ashamed at what happened.

      • tyler

maybe he didnt realize it back then. That was ten years ago. Youre so ignorant… a gay man doesnt know he is gay when he is born. ignornant conservative

      • jeremiah

You need stop being a jerk, you have no idea how hard it is to come out, I was crying my eyes out the first time I told someone I was gay because I thought people would disapprove and there wasn’t even that many people I told, I can’t even imagine coming out to millions of people, he is a courageous man and I wish him the best in this world, he has everything going for him and I think you being jealous is very immature.

      • Dan Carver

He might not have been Relevant here in the US but he’s still had a lucrative career in the Latino world… Even a Sell out tour IN The US just a couple of years ago. So he still has an audience of considerable size.

      • jpratm

        I agree.

      • Christina

Ricky may not be “relevant” here in the United States but he is still hugely popular all over the world Rosalie.

      • Woody Autumn

Coming out is personal. One comes out when they are ready and willing to do so. You should not be trying to determine that for someone else. Hail to Ricky!

      • Victoria

        I agree!!!

      • Jennifer

Ricky is and always has been a very spiritual man. I believe when he says he is a fortunate gay man he is not speaking from money or arrogance he is speaking from a place of peace and love. He is blessed in so many ways as we all are and is simply speaking of his own truth and doing so in his own way on his own terms.

      • Jimmy

No Way! Ricky Martin? Who’s next Ryan Seacrest, Tom Brady, the judge from dancing with the stars?

      • vero

Sadly, the person saying Ricky is no longer “relevant” has no idea what this man does for the “truly unfortunate” people around the world. Until you can become more selfless and less concerned about your own negativity you will understand that only the person going through it knows when the “right time” is to come out to the world.

      • Craig

See this is where you are wrong. Ricky Martin is still relevant in Latin America which is where his coming out will make a real impact. Here in the States a gay celebrity isn’t really a big deal. Kudos to Martin for being so brave and for doing the right thing for his children. Remember they can only shame you when you feel ashamed of who you are!

      • Japhy

ROSALIE — Ricky NEVER (EVER) denied. He never answered the question and said it wasn’t relevant. Obviously, you didn’t read the blog post – it’s not relevant. If it’s not relevant that David Letterman is straight then it’s not relevant that Ellen is gay. Likewise, if it’s not relevant and we don’t go saying GAY ACTOR TOM HANKS, then it’s not appropriate to go around saying GAY SINGER RICKY MARTIN.

You ARE obviously bitter UNHAPPY and tortured AND an attention seeker. May I suggest therapy?

      • Rosalie

Wow! I am bitter, homophobic and a conservative according to most of you. You all are entitled to your opinion about me based on one post, but I am not entitled to an opinion of Ricky even though I’ve fallowed his career since the 80′s? Also, why do people always attack someone for misspelling a word? For your information, I am gay friendly, a constitunionalist, and in good mental health. Anyhow, the announcement was made in an
American web site, and I was basing my comment based on the American music entertainment where he no longer matters. Like it or not, he bacame a punch line a long time ago here in the States. HOw other countries deal with this issue is not my business. When they are ready to be more accepting, they will do so.

      • peaches

I agree with Rosalie. And do straight people come out and say “I’m straight”? Why do we care and have to hear about a gay person’s sexual prowess? And why is America so infatuated with gaydom? And why shouldn’t people be bitter? Here we female fans are, lusting after a gorgeous sexy Latin man and wishing we could have him, only to find out that while we’re screaming for him while standing with our boyfriend, he was probably lusting after the boyfriend instead of us. Where are the men who love women? It seems they’re getting fewer and fewer. Of course I’m bitter, and so should most women be. I’m sick of every cute celebrity who I either idolise or fantasize over, coming out. Well I find it’s a tragedy, so sue me!

      • latina1976

I am happy for him. He came out when he wanted to. It isn’t up to us to judge anyone. As long as, Ricky and his family are happy, it doesn’t matter what the rest of the world thinks. People that judge should really look at themselves in the mirror, then maybe they’ll get a reality check. Go ahead Ricky Martin!!!!

      • TONY

that is the truth, if he was going to be so happy about it he could have done it long time ago, same for George Michael, when he was very HOT and younger he never came out he waited until he had aged like a prune and career was over the peak and then decided, well I guess I will just come out now! but in the meantime I will first enjoy all my str8 edge benefits before I make that move!

      • J. W.

Coming out at the height of your career would be a dumb thing to do.

Revealing your sexual identity in the twilight of your career means more because it shows people that this person was talented and in full force back when you loved them and their sexual orientation wasn’t an issue or didn’t matter.

And, how cynical can you be? A decision like that is personal and no one’s business!! No celebrity should deny themselves a livlihood or be publicly persecuted so you can feel good. Look to your own circle of family and friends, or yourself-for that matter-for self-respect ans self esteem.

      • Baro23

You people should know that his kids gave him the strength to come out and you people should show him respect after what hes been through keeping it a secret. If he came out early then that means his career would have been in jeopardy. He should be hailed because this will surely tell us that everybody who are closeted to come out and express themselves for who they really are. Homosexuality lives in all of us. If you find a woman attractive due to their dress and body figure you have a feminine side. If you dont then you dont know how it feels to be human.

Homosexuality exist in all of us rather you believe it or not.

      • Berlin

        You Rosalie are an idiot.
Get a life and quit trying to pass your opinions as facts.

        LAME

    • Jolie

There is a long list of in the closet male celebs waiting to come out…

      • Wyde Aynnus

        1. Kevin Spacey
        2. Tom Cruise
        3. Tom Hanks
        4. Will Smith
        5. RPattz
        6. Dakota Fanning
        7. Mo’nique
        8. Tina Fey
        9. Julia Roberts
        10. Helen Mirren

      • Richard

Does anyone know if he has a new album coming out?

Surely now he is getting on in age, having some pre-sale publicity would do him the world of good.

So, he is now sure to be invited to Elton’s Christmas bash ;)

      • BenG

Haha Dakota Fanning…but Will Smith? Really? What about Brian Singer? Or is that just public knowledge now?

      • KC

        Wyde Annus?

      • Claire

        Per Wyde Aynnus list,

        LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Luis

Hahaha, Dakota Fanning, WTF?!! Julia Roberts? Helen Mirren? Mo’Nique? Tina Fey?!?! You need to stop listening to all these rumors, buddy.

      • Jen

Well, Liz Lemon does dress like a small town lesbian, if you believe Jack.

      • Jamal

Why is Dakota Fanning on this list and why isn’t Leonardo DiCaprio on this list, or did he come out already?

      • Veracity

I am shocked, SHOCKED, to find out that Dakota Fanning, Mo’nique, Tina Fey, Julia Roberts, and Helen Mirren are all male.

      • James S.

Bryan Singer is open. And Seacrest…don’t forget Seacrest.

      • Alan

Anderson Cooper has to be next.

      • Lala

Let us not forget John Travolta!

      • peaches

Wyde Aynnus is an idiot. I say no more.

    • kaci

And in other news, the sky is blue.

      • Ryan

        Well Played

      • Lala

        This.

    • Arturo D.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if Jim Parsons was gay?

      • Harrison

It would be more fantastic if it didn’t matter if he were gay or straight (but I see your point).

    • Wickeddoll

I’m still waiting for David Spade to come out. Simon Cowell, too. But Ricky should have known we already knew this – it does seem to be a publicity stunt, but for what? What has he done lately?

      • James S.

Don’t get too hasty about Cowell: Mrs. Cowell-Seacrest might not be ready.

      • aboonie

He has done plenty just now here in the US. He has plenty of hits in Spanish.

    • jared4ever

If he had had the courage to come out in 2000, he might still have a career. At the time I saw him as cowardly and was completely turned off. Everyone knew he was gay so he managed to turn off gay and straight fans alike by not being brave enough to come out. Coming out now smacks of desperation.

      • Dee

        Ditto, well said.

      • EWsMom

        Good point.
His career is clearly on life support – even in Latin America where he hasn’t had a proper single/album hit in over FOUR years.

Good way for him to enjoy a few more minutes of the spotlight before he’s shuffled out for the next international latino pop star.

      • cowboy

HE DOES have a career. He’s as big in Latin America as he ever was. Just because he isn’t on YOUR radar doesn’t mean he is gone. You’re a fool. Become a world citizen before you speak for the world, ok?

      • Japhy

EW MOM’s — you must be Octomom? I wouldn’t want to have come out of YOUR loins, that’s for darn sure.

    • Sarah

Not surprised, but I am happy for him. I can only imagine the weight that is lifted off his shoulders.

    • vittorio

      i think its cool,,,,,,,

      • peaches

another idiot. vittorio. He thinks it’s cool. That’s your contribution? Why do you think it’s cool? because it’s cool to be different? it’s cool to be gay? it’s fun? Ricky Martin was in torment for 10 years. I’m sure he didn’t think it was cool. Why do you? You’re an idiot.

    • Michael

This just in: OJ Simpson tells the world that he’s black. Good for him, but…

      • ks

        pretty much my feelings

      • Michael has issues

What the heck are you talking about – he’s whiter than a sheet of paper

    • tony

As a gay man myself,,, i knew he was gay since i saw him the first time when he was with the puertorican group Menudo,,, i was waiting for this moment for years ,,,, NOT

      • GAY FOR TIM

hey Tony, what about Tim Urban from Idol do you think he is gay? cause I would love do things to him if you know what I mean. also how about Seacrest or do you think that just rumor? and while I’m asking how bout Simon? (I’m keeping my fingers crossed on that one)

      • Julia Julia

Tim Urban isn’t gay but Aaron Kelly sure is.

    • maria

yeah..seacreast is next…and Ricky your still the hottest man alive and the fortunate is the man that gets to share your bed!!!!

    • KD

your fu**ing ignorant, why dont you read up on him, his music sells.

    • Yvette

Rosalie, you sound like an idiot. If you are in the public eye, as many entertainers are, it is quite difficult to have a private life. Whether they chose to be a celebrity or not, privacy is something that is difficult to maintain. Ricky Martin does not owe anyone any explanation of who he is, what he does, how he does it, etc. He is a wonderful entertainer, a talented and successful human being and owes NOTHING to anyone. I have always loved him and his music, have also respected the fact that he has tried very hard to maintain a private life in spite of his success, and is raising two boys who are blessed to call him dad. Anyone can get as nasty with their comments as they want, but unless you have something to boast about and not be so critical, shut the heck up!

    • Mauricio Martin lol

hahahahah its funny cuz its truth hhahahahahah Its very funny to find the ignorant, conservative and close minded really immediately coming out to the Blogs to make their poor voice heard about any new event Yea Ricky Martin is Gay So? he is friken gorgeous, talented, Hot as all hells, Nice, Generous, and last but not least Rich~Bitch!!! lol Rosalie Really??? Ricky Martin Irrelevant since 2000 Wake Up and get out of your country just to see what happens out in the world, lol somebody with all the attributes like his is current on relevance just by walking or doing stretching exercises on a beach thats F~ing Relevance lol Live and let live your miserable or fortunate life will not get any better by bashing someones life.

    • isiscey1

LOL. Seacrest I thought he already came out of the closet publicly. lol

    • patricia

anyways people, ricky martib being gay or not does not make any one neither more rich or poor let him live his life, if thats what he is and he choosed to reveal his sexuality at this point of his life its cause he feels comftarble, i believe having to reveal such thing to all his fan the world is something hard but we cannot judge because we all have a tail behind oour lifes that will follow us so be easy on him thats his life he is what he wants to be and be what you want to be if that makes you happy.

    • jeff

      Ricky Martin gay!

      Ya think so?

    • yadira

Get over yourself Rosalie. (bitter party of one!. Good for you Ricky! I love you even more now.

    • Art G

The Latino population should applaud him! Trust me, its not easy being gay in such a macho traditional environment! I say Ole’ to you Ricky. Thank God we now have a strong Latino Gay role modle!!

    • Felix

I’m a puerrorrican living in CA, born in PR and live there for 20 years. I’m a 100% sure that not everyone think he’s an hero. That’s old news, I don’t consider him a real puertorrican but just one more in this fu$&$ sick world full of hipocrits. U don’t born gay, that’s not an illness but an option, so I just consider that real stupidity…

      • peaches

Good for you Felix. I agree with you. Being gay is a choice, and Ricky Martin chose his. That doesn’t mean I have to jump up for joy and say “oh how wonderful, good for him”. It’s his life, let him do what he want, but don’t be angry with people who are not supportive of the lifestyle.

    • Natalie Bonilla

Rosalie, you are the biggest ignorant idiot in this blog. Maybe you should do some research before you make a stupid comments like that. Ricky Martin has been in the music industry for 25 years. Yes, you haven’t heard of him since the early 2000s, but how would a moron like you know that he started off in the Latin world, crossed over to the American Industry for three years and went back to Latin music again. He has won a Latin grammy for every album every year since 2000. His long time humanitarian efforts made him person the year in 2006. Get your info straight honey.

      • Diane

Gee that’s weird. Wiki has his last Spanish language album completed in 2003 and his 2007 Latin Grammy (the only one he’s ever won) for an MTV freaking appearance. Forgive those of us who think that maybe his MUSIC relevance is a little dated.

      • Natalie Bonilla

That’s funny that you go on wikipedia to find information on him. That is how low this society is that they depend on a website to inform themselves on what is happening in the world.

      • Tiff

        Natalie Bonilla sucks wang.

    • wendy

He chooses to have children without a woman. He is the most egocentric person I have seen so far. Clay Aiken Who is gay has his allowed his son the opportunity to have a mother the child, I am highly disappointed in Ricky Martin. I want my money back. I think he is the biggest hypocrite on the face of the earth. He got his riches lying to the public and to his fans. I want my money back. Why didn’t he allow his children to have a mother? Does he not think that the role of the mother is important? He is self-centered, egotistical, and thinks himself a God. Just because his children are rich does not mean that they will not suffer. Unfortunately, everyone in life suffers rich or poor, beautiful or ugly. We almost all go through trying times. It is obvious that his children will never know what is what it feels like to have a mother or what a mother’s love is. Now he comes out the closet. I think he has made his children’s childhoods so much more difficult.

      • Jean Genie

You sound like a child yourself, Wendy. Quit whining & mind your own business.

      • wtf

Wendy.. shut the f*ck up. You sound so dumb right now.

      • Plain Jane

We don’t know – maybe they do know and contact their Mother. I really hope so , it’s very important for a child.

    • wakeforce

      Anderson Cooper!

    • moots

Hell! yah! This will put an end to ignorant one’s that always make fun of gay people, who by the way one of the most creative, smart, and not to mention handsome and sexy man there is.Hurray For Ricky!!

    • Bebe

Good for him! As for him not being as relevant as he was 10 years ago … So what? He came out and he’s still a young guy. He didn’t wait until he was 60 like most male celebs who come out. Ricky deserves some credit for that! Hey Ricky, I’m buying your next album!

    • Jimmy

No Way! Ricky Martin? Who’s next Ryan Seacrest, Tom Brady, the judge from dancing with the stars?

      • CleverShrew

No, Bruno from DWTS is already waaaay out and very proud.

    • cndn610

Rosalie, are you sure Ricky “denied” he was gay? All I ever heard him say is that he didn’t believe it mattered. People should be free to love whomever they wished. If he “denied” it, I guess I’ve missed it.

    • Daxx

while the timing to coincide with his memoirs is certainly suspect, it also coincides with a commont by another big name latin performer who stated that they would rather see a child starve to death than be raised in a gay household. Oh, and this is an eff’ing EW post, not exactly the center of the universe.

    • corina

ricky martin was already a huge star in latin america, europe and the rest of the world outside of the us before he ever became a household name after the grammys. he continues to be an icon in latin america and the spanish speaking world and the support he has recieved from the latin american artists, fans and media since making this statement shows this. bravo ricky, you continue to inspire us and your loyal fans will always remain.

    • Maria

      Next to come out will be;
George Cloony, Seacrest, Mario Lopez, and Oprah

    • wakeforce

Tyler Perry, anyone! As gay as they come.

    • lisa

like really , who couldn’t tell

  • coco

    Good for him! Love him!

    • Jasper

I think this is great news. I’ve always loved Ricky, since his Menudo days. This is likdufderfgusjk7ybp- p sorry I had to clean up my keyboard after a huge slooge.

  • Nshi

    Next up, Kevin Spacey.

    • J.

      Lol, agreed.

    • claudenorth

      It’ll NEVAH happen…

    • Celimene

As far as I knew, Spacey wasn’t even in the closet. I mean, he doesn’t shout it from the rooftops but he lives his life as a gay man in London.

  • derek

I big total double-duh, but congrats on coming out, nonetheless! It’s hard, and takes a lot of courage. Way to go Ricky!

  • S.O.

    ………. & life moves on.

  • darclyte

And in other “duh” news: water is wet, the sky is blue, grass is green, and the sun is hot.

    • nice try

The sky is really not blue. Nice try.

Not all grace is green. Try again.

      • Jerry

        But all grass is green.

      • Desmo

What a snob… umm excuse me the sky is actually not blue… losers!!!

      • Mcfly

Yes the sky is actually perriwinkle. Wow, did that sound gay.

  • hobokendave

It’s crass that he comes out as he states on his blog he is working on his memoirs. In other words, coming out as publicity for sales

    • Bayonnebob

Agree. But what else is going to reel buyers in?

  • HD

    Congratulations!

  • J.

Maybe Bryan Singer and Zachary Quinto can come out together.

    • derek

Bryan Singer has been out from the beginning…

    • ola ola ola AYE!!!

      Bryan Singer is openly gay.

      • S.O.

I didn’t know Bryan Singer was gay? he’s a hell of a movie director.

    • Jolie

      Who is Bryan Singer?

      • S.O.

movie director of The Usual Suspects, the 1st 2 XMEN movies, & Valkarie.

      • jordan

        AND superman returns!

    • MultiPass

who the hell is Zachary Quinto? Singer has been out forever, btw.

      • Splooge

He’s like the hottest thing on Heroes. He’s yummy. I would like cake batter off his hairy chest any day.

      • LindaT

He played Spock in the Star Trek movie.

      • Odot

And Tori Spelling’s gay friend in her scripted show, I forget what it was called, but it was actually funny.

      • D-Con

He’s not gay but his eyebrows might be.

    • sarah d

GASP! Don’t you ever say an unkind word about Zachary Quinto. I am going to marry him!

      • Wickeddoll

Being gay is unkind? News to me. But I’m always amazed at public interest in a person’s sex life. Who’s screwing who, etc. All I want to know about celebrities is what new movie/CD/TV show they have coming up. All that tawdry detail makes me feel like a voyeur, but you can’t avoid it – even on “legit” news.

      • quinto lover

no sarah I’m gonna gay marry him :P Totally lick the cake batter off his bod

    • James S.

Just YouTube’d Zachary Quinto on Ellen. Ironic that she introduced him as “Queen-toe.” I think the gays would take him.

    • Dean

Matt Bomer can come out too.

      • nezo

        YES PLEASE!

  • Jane

Didn’t we learn this when Babs Walter asked about “golden showers?”

  • Cris

Way to go Ricky … and only 15 years after the rest of the world knew …

    • Wickeddoll

      LOL!

  • Tha Phoenix

    Like we didn’t already know.

    I don’t think I’ve ever cared less.

  • Moi

I’m not surprised – but you’re right, coming always takes courage.

    • Munky

Then I’m courageous at least once a day!

      • XD

ROTFL !! This was excellent !! XD

    • Desmo

No need to post again and again…

    • Annoyed by Rosalie

Poor Rosalie, all these years she had hoped “She Bangs” was about her. Guess the crashing of those dreams caused ur bitter post, get over yourself bioutch.

      • Jane

bahaaa!!!! Well said Annoyed by Rosalie

    • Devil

What’s the matter, Rosalie? One post isn’t enough? Someone needs to go back on her meds.

    • vader1013

      oh you bitter, bitter lesbian.

    • Jean Genie

Rosalie sounds like a self-righteous idiot in need of a real life.

  • MultiPass

Awesome. A fantastic posterboy too. You go, Ricky!
