Lala music service to be shut down by Apple May 31

Filed under: News and tagged: , , ,

Customers of cloud-streaming music site Lala got an email today informing them that the service, which was purchased by Apple back in December, will be discontinued as of May 31. The email went on to inform subscribers that they would receive a credit to the iTunes store for the amount of their ten-cent Lala streaming-song purchases and/or remaining balance, or refunds upon request. (All downloaded songs will continue to play in their owners’ music libraries.)

It was widely anticipated at the time of Apple’s purchase that they intended to absorb the Lala technology — which houses users’ music libraries in a “cloud” (remote server), rather than on any one device — and there is wide speculation that Apple now intends to launch a cloud-based version of iTunes.

What do you think of this turn of events, Mixers? We’ll bring you more news as it happens, but in the meantime, any happy/irate Lala/Apple users out there? Support groups forming now.

New 'Glee' music: Hear Jane Lynch and Olivia Newton-John cover 'Physical'

We’ve already heard Sue Sylvester (the phenomenal Jane Lynch) tackle Madonna’s classic “Vogue.” But now the Cheerios coach is dueting with another blonde pop diva: Olivia Newton-John. The Grease star makes an appearance in next week’s episode of Glee, entitled “Bad Reputation,” and records a new version of her hit “Physical” with Sue. And how does this surprising collaboration come about? Well, Sue is embarrassed when a video of her Jazzercising is leaked and Newton-John comes to her rescue. Says Lynch, “She gives me a call and says ‘Let’s remake the “Physical” video for a new generation. You’ve been humiliated, I was humiliated by my video, so let’s get out there and redeem ourselves.’” Lynch adds that working with the singer was a dream. “We had a little dance rehearsal and then we spent the whole day together,” says the actress. “She’s just a wonderful woman, exactly the way you’d think she’d be.”

What do you think of the new “Physical,” Music Mix-ers? Is it better than the original?

The Music Mix recommends: dream-pop duo Phantogram

PhantogramImage Credit: Doron GildNorthwest imprint Barsuk Records is still probably best known for its longtime lock on chiming, literate indie rock (see formative releases from Death Cab for Cutie, Rilo Kiley, Nada Surf, etc).

So even if you’re a fan of newer signees like Ra Ra Riot and Menomena, you may have slept on the release of this February’s Eyelid Movies, the beats-based full-length debut from upstate New York duo (and recent SXSW favorites) Phantogram.

If you did, you’re missing out on a delicate, shoegaze-y treat: Movies‘ lush update on the atmospheric swoon of ’90s trip-hop idols Portishead, Massive Attack, et al. is the stuff dream-pop reveries are made of.

Stream an exclusive Alan Wilkis remix of album favorite “Mouthful of Diamonds” below, and see them on tour through June (including a clutch of dates with the current champs of the genre, U.K. imports the xx.)

Max Weinberg NOT dropped from Conan's TBS show... because no one's been added yet.

Filed under: News and tagged:

Yesterday’s reports that drummer Max Weinberg had been dropped from Conan O’Brien’s band as the whole former Tonight Show squad heads to TBS are untrue, say reps for O’Brien, who add “no details for the TBS show have been set as of now, none at all.” Seems Team Coco is too busy with their Team Tourtour to worry about producing a TV show at some point in the near-ish future, which is understandable, and it looks like they’re having a blast out there on the road — even though Weinberg’s not with them. The lack-of-TBS-show-details thing is also evidently not just a PR line: several other sources close to the show admitted they have no idea what’s being planned for Conan’s return, either.

So there ya go, Mixers. Rumor debunked. But if you had to bet how this one’s gonna play out in the end, what are you thinkin’? And since they don’t have anything set as of now, anything at all… what do YOU think Conan should do with his TBS slot?

New Miley Cyrus, 'Can't Be Tamed': Death to Hannah Montana

Filed under: Let's Argue! and tagged: , ,

miley-cyrusImage Credit: Michael Tran/FilmMagic.comShe’s done with Disney. She’s open to nude scenes (“If it’s something that’s classy”). And you know why? Because Miley Cyrus Cannot Be Tamed.

The millionaire Mouseketeer, soon to be free of her Hannah Montana chains, will release the video for new single “Can’t Be Tamed,” from the upcoming album of the same name, on Tuesday, May 4 via E!, though the track is already up at her Myspace right now: Stream it here.

Snap judgment? I went to the mat for “Party in the U.S.A.” last year, and made lots of new hate-mail friends. Still love it.

But this one doesn’t really give me major sensations either way. It’s thumpy, synthy, a little bit AutoTune-y—in other words, it kind of sounds like it came from the same late-’90s spin class as Christina Augilera’s new one, “Not Myself Tonight.”Not bad business for stationary cardio, but not the stuff year-end top tens are made of, either. And then she rhymes “tell ya” and “sell ya” with “go to hell…beep beep.” Sigh(rus).

Am I wrong?

U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan do Lady Gaga's 'Telephone': Army strong!

Lady-Gaga-cans-hairWhen in Rome, of course you must do as the Romans do. And when in Afghanistan fighting Operation Enduring Freedom, do, in your downtime, as Gaga does.

Members of the 82nd Airborne Division have posted their remake of her bonanza “Telephone” video, and considering their severely limited resources, it’s pretty ingenious—no Marlboro Lights eyewear or Miracle Whip, just duct tape, fatigues, and a plywood-and-garbage-bag set. Watch the boys getting k-kinda bizz-ay in the barracks:

Christina Aguilera's 'Not Myself Tonight' video: Gone totally (Lady) Gaga, Madonna, or just desperate for relevance?

Filed under: Madonna and tagged: , , ,

christina-aguileraImage Credit: RCAThe video for Christina Aguilera’s new single, “Not Myself Tonight,” hit the internets in the wee hours of the morning and immediately had the blogosphere—well, that’d be mostly one Mr. Perez Hilton—buzzing that it was a Lady Gaga rip-off. To be fair, it seems that Hilton thinks everything begins and ends with Gaga. But in this case, if you watch the clip after the jump, you’ll see that such a claim is by no means crazy talk.

In the video, Aguilera mostly prances around in various dominatrix-esque and lingerie-inspired outfits, sans any sort of storyline. You’ll see plenty of slick materials, exposed bras, and a whip. And, yes, there a few moments that are uncannily Gaga-ish. Two stick out in my mind: namely, those shots of Christina in white with a harem of dancers, and the moments where you see the diva, wet, in red lingerie. Just take a look here:

The Killers' Brandon Flowers announces solo album: 'Flamingo'

Filed under: News and tagged:

Brandon-FlowersImage Credit: Gaye Gerard/WireImage.comBrandon Flowers is stepping out on his own. As noted by Billboard, visitors to the Killers’ official website will currently find a neon sign flashing the frontman’s name under the headline “THE NEW SOLO ALBUM — FLAMINGO — COMING SOON.” Some spacey synths, sprightly bleeps, and a snatch of wordless falsetto loop on the soundtrack. And…that’s all we’ve got right now.

A rep for the Killers confirms to the Music Mix that Flowers has a solo album titled Flamingo on the way, but offers no further details at this time. When I spoke to Flowers last November, he dodged a question about the Killers’ studio plans: “We’re always trying to write songs. But right now we’ve got a month and a half of touring, South America and South Africa. That’s what’s on the brain.”

Are you looking forward to hearing Flamingo? What do you hope it sounds like?

Pharrell Williams' N.E.R.D. rock out at New York concert

nerdImage Credit: Johnny Nunez/WireImage.comWhen Pharrell Williams, Shae Haley, and Chad Hugo—who together form N.E.R.D.—hit The Fillmore’s stage in downtown Manhattan last night, their geeked up fans knew exactly what to do: raise their hands and give the Vulcan salute. A self-proclaimed Trekkie, Williams is the head of Star Trak records. Relaxed, in a back fitted cap, white t-shirt, and jeans, Williams calmly returned the greeting. That was the only time Pharrell stood still.

The show kicked off with “Kill Joy,” their maddening single from 2008′s Seeing Sounds. From then on, Williams and Haley wildly traded verses on cult classics like “Spaz,” “She Wants to Move,” “Everyone Nose,” and “Hot N Fun,” the new single from their forthcoming album, Nothing. When he wasn’t rapping, Pharrell was dancing. Arms flailing and legs kicking, his moves looked like rhythmic seizures. But there, at a punk-rock-meets-hip-hop show, they worked.

The crowd enjoyed and matched his energy, creating several mosh pits as cuts like the rebellious “Rock Star” ripped through the speakers. Eventually Williams slowed it down to sing dreary ballads. “Maybe” showcased his trademark falsetto. Next was “Sooner or Later,” which the fans belted out  good portion of.

Before closing the show, Williams announced that a good friend of the group’s just had their first child. “N.E.R.D. makes baby-making music,” he said. And then he suggested that the following song was what the new born was conceived to. The track was the strip club rock anthem “Lapdance.” Nasty, right?

“All jokes aside,” Pharrell said in closing, “this was the raddest show ever.” It sure was.

'MacGruber' soundtrack: 'SNL' star Kristen Wiig sings

Filed under: Music and tagged: , , ,

Kristen-wiigImage Credit: Mathew Imaging/WireImageWhen Saturday Night Live-skit-turned-big-screen-fandango MacGruber uncorks in theaters on May 21, it will do so to the soaring synthesizer chords of “Champion,” a triumphantly low-budge theme song from co-star Kristen Wiig (a.k.a. Vicki St. Elmo).

In true MacGruber form, the song—featuring the appropriately monikered U.K. collage-rocker Lightspeed Champion—sounds like it was put together with a Yamaha keytar, a portable mic, a ten-line rhyming dictionary, and a dream. (You can stream it for yourself over at Stereogum.)

The soundtrack’s other entries lean heavily towards velveeta ’80s classics (Toto’s “Rosanna,” Mr. Mister’s “Broken Wings,” Quarterflash’s “Harden My Heart”), with a few burly indie-rock garnishes (the Black Keys’ “Heavy Soul,” the Hives’ “Tick Tick Boom”).

What do you think, summer-movie soundtrack fans—MacGreat or MacBetterLuckNextTime?
