Nashville newcomer Easton Corbin hit No. 1 on the country charts a couple weeks ago with “A Little More Country Than That,” by far the most annoying song off his otherwise-excellent debut album and the latest example of Music Row’s obsession with writing songs that are basically lists of romanticized backwoods imagery, designed to give artists the rural version of street cred. (Creek cred?)
What about those of us who love country music, but don’t fit the stereotype? Mixers, some of you now have a voice. Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood of Lady Antebellum (whose current single, “American Honey,” should go No. 1 itself any day now) have written a parody version of Corbin’s hit, an ode to those “neglected” folk who value iPods and pink polo shirts, who dream of new cars and sweet shots down the fairway instead of rutting down some pot-holed dirt road in a truck full of mudfish towards a town where all the people and dogs are old. In honor of this weekend’s Masters — Kelley and Haywood are from Augusta, after all — I now give you “A Little More Preppy Than That.” Watch it after the jump. See ya on the first tee.

Whitney, if you actually listen to the Corbin song’s lyrics, it isn’t a list at all. It actually is a well-written song with some lyrical depth and sound structure. I think you got it confused with Eric Church’s “Love Your Love the Most.” I agree with the general argument that there are too many of these generic “I like beer and NASCAR” songs, but Corbin’s release isn’t a good example –it is something George Strait or Alan Jackson could have done.
