Drake's new 'Over' video: Watch it here

drake“Over,” the lead single from hip-hop’s leading young man Drake and his forthcoming Thank Me Later, is a prideful track about a guy who fought for notoriety, gained it, and now struggles with what comes with it: criticism, groupies, and the pressure of expected greatness.

“I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t know last year,” he sings on the cut’s hook. “Who the f— are y’all?”

Today his Anthony Mandler-directed video for “Over” hit the internet. It’s artistically contradictory. He chose not to go the cliche rap-video route and fill his four-minute flick with nearly naked women, Ciroc bottles, and Beamers. Instead there is one leading lady, rap mogul Jay-Z‘s Roc Nation artist Rita Ora, acting as Drake’s distant love. For the majority of the video he sits alone in his bedroom as flashing images of busy streets and crowds of strangers float around him, pensive and rebellious. It’s controlled chaos. And it works.

His D-cup-filled (and Kanye West-directed) “Best I Ever Had” video from his So Far Gone mixtape last year got a lukewarm response for going a bit left of what his female fan base desired, but this one’s dead on in a not so obvious way. Good work, Drizzy.

Drake’s debut album, Thank Me Later , hits stores June 15, but you can watch his new video after the jump right now.

Even I made fun of it, but it isn’t terrible. It’s not the beautiful tragedy that Breast I Ever Had was, but it isn’t awful. First official video for his first album, he has Room For Improvement and time to grow….

love Drake. love the video but i didn’t think it did anything for him as an artist. i was interested in what would happened next but not because of Drake’s performance. i think the concept outsized his vibe. i didn’t buy him as brooding and intense. i think there are artists whose performance can match the concept, i just don’t think Drake is one of them. i think Anthony Mandler failed him in that respect. that being said, Drake’s a star so it’s not going to hurt him. i hope at some point there will be a director that can bring his essence and deliver a video that is not just successful artistically but also for Drake as an artist.
