Wright revealed that she is a lesbian in an interview with People today, saying, “Nothing in my life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out.” Wright is preparing to release a new album and a memoir; she will appear on NBC’s Today show this Wednesday.

Who?
Yes, that and why is this newsworthy. A person’s sexual orientation is their business and not sure how, except for her own personal needs, is it necessary to say something about it. Great that she feels good, but not sure why it should be reported.
Lots of children out there are Gay\Lesbian – there is no more probable chance of a kid in Los Angeles being gay than someone in Knoxville…and this is important. LGBT kids who don’t have role models and healthy outlets very often end up lost – sometimes falling to substance abuse and self hatred.
Anytime someone in the public eye can come out and still know how wonderful they are – they will inspire others to a similar fate.
Did Randy Travis come out yet? Darrin Otto?
You have obviously never lived in the closet…. Because to sit quietly and listen to other including her own father make disparaging comments about homosexuals was is hurtful and self deprecating. And because the sad alternative is to live a lie.
Her most famous single was “Single White Female.” Good voice. Beautiful woman.
You mean her only famous single. I remember that song was huge in 1999, but after that, she basically disappeared.
“Wright is preparing to release a new album…”
Of course she is.
Her publicist Howard Bragman has been teasing this for weeks and has her booked on several talk shows tomorrow. Apparently, coming out is now a marketing plan.
he made it sound like it was going to be an A list actor. No offense to the talented Chely Wright but she’s not even A list among country singers, is she?
Seriously. Maybe this will sell one or two more copies of her album.
So it would seem… I hadn’t heard anything about her or her music in ages.
When all other marketing angles fail…
In a related story, is there a better name for a publicist than “Howard Bragman”?
Agreed. Big deal.
Yes, she decided to be a lesbian just to see more records? Get a clue.
(Exasperated sigh) I’m not suggesting that her being a lesbian is a way for her to sell more records.
I’m suggesting that her ANNOUNCING that she’s a lesbian just as she’s about to drop a new album (and could use some publicity) is a little suspicious.
Ceballos, you cynic…Chely is simply trying to deflect attention from the flagrant misspelling of her name.
good for her!!!
So much for her career. Hope that new album has some pop leanings, cuz country just ain’t havin’ this.
Aw c’mon. Hadn’t you heard that country music is broadening its horizons? They actually let Darius Rucker sing at the Grand Ol’ Opry! And nary a white sheet in sight…
There must have been a Tea Party that day.
The first performer ever on the Grand Ole Opry was DeFord Bailey, an African-American harmonica player.
Not true. The Grand Ole Opry was “born” on November 28, 1925, with Uncle Jimmy Thompson as the first performer for its AM-radio launch. He was an older’n'dirt fiddle player – and quite white. Bailey was the first black performer to take the Opry stage, but that was almost year later, in 1926.
even though country music leans heavily toward the conservative side of the aisle, I would hope whatever backlash exists resides only in the hearts of the hopeless.
I appreciate that thought! I’m glad children of the Heartland..Country will have someone that they can look to who represents one of the best parts of country music – Honesty!
Just because you’re a narrow minded, backwoods fool doesn’t mean everyone else is. This doesn’t bother me, because I’m not ignorant enough to deny someone’s talent based on what happens in their personal lives. Unless you’re Mindy McCready- that chicks just messed up!
Feeble Old Lady…bless your heart, but your comment is exactly why Chely Wright coming out is important. There is nothing wrong with being old school or even conservative – but there are lots of Gay\Lesbian country fans who can finally say that country music reflects every aspect of who they are.
Well, good for her. They sure hyped it to make it sound like it was a MAJOR celeb. And while I get that it’s a big to do ’cause she’s a country musician…I’m kind of “meh” about it.
Wake me up when Kelly Clarkson or Queen Latifah make that announcement.
It’s only big news when gay Country artists come out….you’ll see when Chesney finally does it.
Yeah. C’mon already, Kelly…the water’s fine.
Kelly’s My December CD was largely about the man who left her for another woman. I don’t think someone who was that hurt and angry over a man (Never Again) could be gay.
Wow, this is the same gal that sang “Bumper of my SUV,” right? She got lumped in with the Toby Keiths of the biz…BOY did I have her pegged wrong!
Yeah, like Toby Keith isn’t totally gay…
But seriously: THIS was the big “gay reveal” people have been talking about for weeks? I suppose I assumed it was going to be someone I had at least heard of before.
Wah-Wah.
Good for her! Now she can live her life openly.
I never heard of her and not intersting in buying anything she thinks she selling.
thanks for keeping an open mind.
The majority of people outside of the country music world are asking “Who?” and to them she won’t be the “Single White Female” girl, she’ll just be the lesbian country singer. She better hope that album has crossover appeal…
Who?
It is kind of big, when you consider the fact that there may only be 1 other gay country artist, even if he is too afraid to come out. I’m talkin to you, Chesney!
why cant she come out of the closet as a bi-sexual what a waste of a beautiful laduy and nice body for both genders to appeciate
You’re an idiot!
