Katy Perry says 'California Gurls' title is indeed a Big Star reference: Whoa!

katy-perry-big-starImage Credit: Emma Summerton; Mike O'Brien/Courtesy of RykodiscKaty Perry is already rockin’ the airwaves with her Snoop-driven new single, “California Gurls,” which sings the praises of Daisy Dukes and gin n’ juice in the most straightforward pop fashion. But those of us still mourning the death of Alex Chilton couldn’t help but wonder… is it possible, could it be, oh say yes please gods of all that is good in the world, that the unconventional spelling is a reference to Big Star’s “September Gurls”?

Yep.

Perry confirms the cool tip o’ the hat. “My manager, Bradford, he’s from Mississippi, and he’s a huge Big Star fan,” she recently told EW. “And with the death of one of their members, I had just written that song, and he’s like, ‘Katy, just for me, will you please title it ‘California Gurls,’ with a ‘u’? People won’t even know!’ I don’t know the whole catalog of Big Star, but I did it because Bradford is one of my best friends, and I thought it was cool, and you know, the kids like those variations.”

What do you think, Mixers? 10 bonus points to Perry? Or just to Bradford?

    • drew

because he told her to change a letter in her song…..
Yep, that must be why u think the song is catchy.

      • blueberry

i love that song and katy is the best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@benjamin…’svengali’ is a bit extreme to use here, don’t you think? it doesn’t seem that there was any malicious or evil intent on the manager’s side. And on top of it, I don’t think Katy is they type of artist that just does what she is told. It sounds like it was a creative idea that was shared with the artist…and she liked it.

    10 points to Bradford.

  • Regina

This is the catchiest song in the history of the universe. lol.

Seriously, this song is everything pop music should be: catchy, smartly written (if a bit cheesy), not too overproduced…LOVE IT!

  • side3

Bradford only. I’m sure Katy had no idea who Big Star are (were).

I do like the song, but I thought she changed the spelling of the title to be cool or something. Mystery solved, I guess.

SO when I first heard about this song before it debuted on her website I casually mentioned it to another gay guy, and inferred that the title was indeed spelled ‘Gurls’ & he quipped back, she should just label the song “California Gurlz” and steal all the gay lingo since she made her big debut with the faux gay track “I Kissed a Girl”, when clearly she isn’t gay since she is making wedding arrangements with that British moron.
So, I fully believe that her manager may be telling the truth, but you can’t help but wonder.
Also, Katy’s album is titled “Teenage Dream” and is dropping August 24th.

      You are such…an idiot.

Gurlz is not gay lingo, it is tween lingo. Awful, awful lingo.

  • Posies Not Perry

This article is so depressing. Long live Alex Chilton and Perry and her vermin can go all to auto-tune hell.

  • katy’s Overrated “Chest”

Katy Perry’s problem is that she was raised with zero culture by seriously f***** up right wing pro-life Christian zealots and has virtually zero knowledge of media history or anything interesting to say due to a colourless religious upbringing. In my experience, this type of person is very untrustworthy as they proudly STEAL songs, ideas and looks to comprise the majority of what they do and even say.
