Backstreet Boys part ways with longtime label Jive: 'This is the best thing that could happen to us'

backstreet_boysImage Credit: Gary Gershoff/WireImage.comAfter a 17-year relationship that yielded 130 million(!) in record sales, eight top-10 albums, and untold episodes of delirious fan fiction, the Backstreet Boys and their label Jive/Zomba are no more—and apparently they both wanted it that way.

Here’s what the band had to say on their official website, in a post entitled (insert Braveheart voice) “Freedom”:

So the news is out! The Backstreet Boys are no longer signed to long time record label Jive Records. The amicable split is very exciting for the group. “This is the best thing, at the best time that could have ever happened for us”, says Brian Littrell. “We are confident in the future of our band, and are looking forward to the new things to come. 2011 is going to be a great year for us!”

One new thing you can’t join them in, unless you’ve already been waitlisted? The Backstreet Boys cruise, slated to travel from Miami to Cozumel, Mexico from December 9-13; it’s all sold out.

  • nat

Backstreet boys could of sold more albums if Jive gave them more attention.. They are doing what they love and i cant walt for the new album yay freedom at last..

    • Jethro

If they want attention and the right attention, they should change their name. Backstreet Boys kind of sounds childish at this point. Aren’t they like all in the 30s?

The other guy got out when he realized all the glitz and glamour was gone and would never come back. Anyway, he was the worse of them all. To think AJ still has a voice with all the drugs and alcohol he consumed is amazing.

Nick and his family did a very embarrassing reality show a few years ago and who will ever let him live that down.

Time for them to call it quits and say adios to the chicos!

      • Tim (not Urban)

Should the Beach Boys change their name as well (after five successful decades)?

Backstreet Boys’ latest c.d., “This Is Us”, is fantastic. With any kind of radio play, “What I Know Now” could be their biggest hit since “I Want It That Way.”

  • hoping next album

is much better than “This is us” because it sucked. I’ve been a fan since the beginning and “This Is Us” is their worst album… ever.

  • Ron

THIS IS US is a gr8 record but d 1 thing i hate is jive song selection des guys chose PDA over Trouble, on without u, fallen angel, figurd u out .. I mean dey recorded some gr8 songs dat remaind unreleasd.
    Good dat dey left jive

  • music

i lovvvv bsb….hope next album is good..even i think this is us was their worst album..

  • Sharlin

after *NSYNC gained respect and bowed out gracefully, BSB never knew how to go away or even evolve.

    • Elizabeth

Apparently you haven’t listened lately… or ever.

I don’t think members leaving the group is bowing out gracefully, either.

Good for the Fellas… hope the next label is in it for the long haul and will support them.

  • Angel

Lol NSYNC broke up because Justin got bigger than the group and didn’t want to be in the band anymore! BSB are still loyal to one another and their fans, they have evolved and it’s because of us, their true fans that they are still here!

  • J

I am so glad they left Jive!! They deserve to be represented by someone who gave a damn. The fans hv been asking for this for a long time!! BSB have always provided us with great music as the new album proves, and we show our appreciation by being faithful fans!!! And thats all that matters. KTBSPA!

  • Nobel

Seriously THIS IS US was their worst album. I hated how they became all RnB. It’s so not them! I hope for their next album they go back to singing their pop ballads. I look forward to 2011!!

    • jinzo

they are a mixture of pop and rnB. they said it themselves

  • heather haley

This was a long time to come I mean come on these guys are so last year if you know what I mean! An’ if none of you remember that A-Jay had an addition that is NOT GOOD for business!

    • Elizabeth

When did mathematics ruin a career?

  • jpratm

NYSNC AND BSB TOUR THAT WOULD BE A SPECTACLE

  • Preston

Jive didn’t promote their last album This Is Us good enough. I thought that it was a fun dance pop album that was very up to the minute with today’s competition. But that said, the Backstreet Boys made great albums for Jive Records. All those great records like I Want it That Way, Everybody, Larger Than Life, and their current single Bigger! I hope that they get on another label soon.
